Hello good people,

My USB memory stick and my netbook are infected with various trojans -- McAfee has detected and deleted or cleaned trojans like Generic.dx!geu and W32.SillyFDC. I think the virus is installed via a CONFIG folder on my memory stick (and now also on the netbook), which keeps reappearing with more recent "created on" dates. It is a hidden "systems" folder - but I'm pretty sure it's not an actual essential systems folder because of the creation date.

What I have done so far is a bit convoluted:

I followed removal instructions on the McAfee website that suggested to disable systems restore on my computer, update McAffee, and re-run a scan. That seemed to work for a bit. The problem is I have used memory stick #1 on several computers (like in a computer lab at a university), and it appears to consistently pick up the virus right back. I could actually see it re-create an autorun.inf file and a CONFIG folder (and another folder called Venet) on the memory stick drive -- all of which come right back if I try to manually delete them (i know, it's stupid to even try this..).

What I tried to do is to transfer the documents from memory stick #1 to a new memory stick #2 - it is #2 that is reflected on this log now. I thought (God knows why) maybe I could just copy the documents without picking up the infected files - fat chance. When I inserted memory stick #2 into my netbook, McAffee detected two Generic.dx!geu Trojans -- but on the C drive. Although I've disabled systems restore again, and rerun an updated McAffee scan, I can still see a hidden CONFIG folder on memory stick #2 and on the netbook - and McAfee is not detecting anything.

Please, please help!

Hello,

Thank you for responding - I suspect I still have malware/viruses on one of my laptop computers. I had my memory stick and netbook cleaned and reformatted, respectively, but am still worried about putting the memory stick into my Thinkpad X41, the other computer. Originally, I realized that my memory stick had the Autorun virus (which created a folder called Venet) -- and I realize that it probably spread to every computer into which I had inserted my memory stick. I had run an eset.com online scan and a malwarebytes scan on the Thinkpad -- eset found 379 inf/autorun and other virus files, malwarebytes found 3-4 bots.

I do not see the tell-tale autorun file or the Venet folder on this laptop, which originally alerted me to the problem on the USB stick, but fear there are other things hiding in it. I would really appreciate you taking a look and letting me know if it's safe to use my USB stick on this machine. Thank you so much!

Hi,

Please download Flash_Disinfector.exe by sUBs and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click Flash_Disinfector.exe to run it and follow any prompts that may appear.
  • The utility may ask you to insert your flash drive and/or other removable drives. Please do so and allow the utility to clean up those drives as well.
  • Hold down the Shift key when inserting the drive until Windows detects it to keep autorun.inf from executing if it is present.
  • Wait until it has finished scanning and then exit the program.
  • Reboot your computer when done.
Note: As part of its routine, Flash_Disinfector will create a hidden folder named autorun.inf in each partition and every USB drive that was plugged in when you ran it. Do not delete this folder...it will help protect your drives from future infection by keeping the autorun file from being installed on the root drive and running other malicious files.

Please also run gmer:
Please download GMER from one of the following locations and save it to your desktop:
  • Main Mirror
This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)
  • Zipped Mirror
This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.
  • Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
  • Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security programs will not conflict with gmer's driver.
  • Double-click on the randomly named GMER file (i.e. n7gmo46c.exe) and allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • Note: If you downloaded the zipped version, extract the file to its own folder such as C:\gmer and then double-click on gmer.exe.

    Posted Image
  • GMER will open to the Rootkit/Malware tab and perform an automatic quick scan when first run. (do not use the computer while the scan is in progress)
  • If you receive a WARNING!!! about rootkit activity and are asked to fully scan your system...click NO.
  • Now click the Scan button. If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save... button to save the scan results to your Desktop. Save the file as gmer.log.
  • Click the Copy button and paste the results into your next reply.
  • Exit GMER and re-enable all active protection when done.
-- If you encounter any problems, try running GMER in Safe Mode.

regards _temp_

is that a bird?  a plane? nooo it's the flying blueberry!

Hi,

this log doesn't look bad, except for the odd registry-key.

Please run Malwarebytes next:
Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link 1
alternate download link 2
If you have a previous version of MBAM, remove it via Add/Remove Programs and download a fresh copy.
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself.
  • Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install. Alternatively, you can update through MBAM's interface from a clean computer, copy the definitions (rules.ref) located in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from that system to a usb stick or CD and then copy it to the infected machine.
On the Scanner tab:
  • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
  • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
  • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. Regardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware. MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you after scanning with MBAM. Please temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.

Are you still having symptoms? Which folders are still present on your system?

I changed my nick from _temp_ to myrti tonight, i hope this won't cause to much problems.
regards myrti

Hi myrti,

Thank you so much for your help! Malwarebytes found nothing - see below. I did two scans, because the first one didn't give me a chance to also scan the removable files. I see no other suspicious files or folders on any drive, so I hope it's good for now!

Hi,

just to be safe I would like to ask you to also do an online scan with Eset:

I'd like us to scan your machine with ESET OnlineScan
  • Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
    ESET OnlineScan
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    • Click on Posted Image to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Check Posted Image
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Check Posted Image
  • Push the Start button.
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, push Posted Image
  • Push Posted Image, and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • Push Posted Image
Please also update your software:
Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 6 and save it to your desktop.
  • Look for "Java Runtime Environment (JRE)" JRE 6 Update 17.
  • Click the Download button to the right.
  • Select your Platform: "Windows".
  • Select your Language: "Multi-language".
  • Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • Click Continue and the page will refresh.
  • Under Required Files, check the box for Windows Offline Installation, click the link below it and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button and follow the onscreen instructions for the Java uninstaller.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u17-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
-- If using Windows Vista and the installer refuses to launch due to insufficient user permissions, then Run As Administrator.
-- If you choose to update via the Java applet in Control Panel, uncheck the option to install the Toolbar unless you want it.
-- The uninstaller incorporated in this release removes previous Updates 10 and above, but does not remove older versions, so they still need to be removed manually.

Note: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications. To disable the JQS service if you don't want to use it, go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter. Click Ok and reboot your computer.

Your Adobe Reader is also out of date. Please uninstall it and download the latest version from Adobe: Download
Please untick all proposed toolbars unless you really want them.

I changed my nick today from _temp_ to myrti, I hope that won't cause confusion.
regards myrti

Thank you - eset actually found no threats, and didn't generate a log. I'm taking that as a good sign. I've also made the updates you recommended, hoping to remain problem free for at least some time!

Thank you again for all your help - really invaluable!!

Hi,

glad to hear that. :)

Since you appear malware free and we brought it up to date, all that is left to do is to clean up the mess we made, by removing the tools used:
Read those last few lines, in order to keep your pc safe and clean:
Please do the following to clean up your PC:
  • Delete the tools used during the disinfection:
    • Download OTC from the following mirrors and save it to your desktop:
    • Double click on Posted Image
    • Push the large "Cleanup" button.
    • Allow your system to reboot.
  • If OTC faild to remove all programs from your Desktop, please delete the rest manually.
  • Disable and Enable System Restore.
You can find instructions on how to disable and reenable system restore here:
    Windows ME System Restore Guide
    Windows XP System Restore Guide
    Windows Vista System Restore Guide

Note: You should only do this once, not on a regular basis!
You will not be able to restore computer to any earlier than today!
Please read these advices, in order to prevent reinfecting your PC:
  • Install and update the following programs regularly:
    • an outbound firewall
A comprehensive tutorial and a list of possible firewalls can be found here.
    • an AntiVirus Software
It is imperative that you update your AntiVirus Software on regular basis. If you do not update your AntiVirus Software then it will not be able to catch the latest threats.
    • an Anti-Spyware program
Malware Byte's Anti Malware is an excellent Anti-Spyware scanner. It's scan times are usually under ten minutes, and has excellent detection and removal rates.
SUPERAntiSpyware is another good scanner with high detection and removal rates.
Both programs are free for non commercial home use but provide a resident and do not nag if you purchase the paid versions.
    • Spyware Blaster
A tutorial for Spywareblaster can be found here. If you wish, the commercial version provides automatic updating.
    • MVPs hosts file
A tutorial for MVPs hosts file can be found here. If you would like automatic updates you might want to take a look at HostMan host file manager. For more information on thehosts file, and what it can do for you, please consult the Tutorial on the Hosts file
  • Keep Windows (and your other Microsoft software) up to date!
I cannot stress how important this is enough. Often holes are found in Internet Explorer or Windows itself that require patching. Sometimes these holeswill allow an attacker unrestricted access to your computer.
Therefore, please, visit the Microsoft Update Website and follow the on screen instructions to setup Microsoft Update. Also follow the instructions to update your system. Please REBOOT and repeat this process until there are no more updates to install!!
  • Keep your other software up to date as well
Software does not need to be made by Microsoft to be insecure. You can use the Secunia Online Software occasionally to help you check for out of date software on yourmachine.
  • Stay up to date!
The MOST IMPORTANT part of any security setup is keeping the software up to date. Malware writers release new variantsevery single day. If your software updates don't keep up, then the malware will always be one step ahead. Not a good thing :(.
