Hi Folks,

First, thanks in advance for any help you can lend. Friends PC was heavily infected and would run extremely slow. IE and various other .exe will not run. Including a number antivirus and malware programs. Also some users when logged in don't show a task bar or start menu. Was able to run windiag32k to get it to limp along, but I am stuck. Ran HJT and came up wth the following:

Do you have the log that it produced, if so post it in your next reply

  • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)
Then please post back here with the following:
  • log.txt
  • info.txt
Thanks

Thanks for your help Syler. Here is my current state. Windows boots to the desktop and then I can not run certain programs, like McAfee or IE explorer. I get permission errors with IE. Uninstalled IE and other, still can't run lot of existing files. Another issue, I logon into one of the users where the problem started I don't get a task bar at all. I've attached the two files you requested from RJIT. Thanks.

DougsB4U,

Rsit reported that you ran that scan in safemode with networking, is that the case? I also see that you have been running combofix.

ComboFix should not be run unless requested by a HJT Team member. It is an extremely powerful tool which should only be used when instructed to do so by someone who has been properly trained. ComboFix is intended by its creator to be "used under the guidance and supervision of an expert", NOT for private use. Please read Combofix's Disclaimer. Using this tool incorrectly could lead to disastrous problems with your operating system such as preventing it from ever starting again.

Post the contents of C:\ComboFix.txt from the run you have already done, if you do not have it leave it out, do not run it again.

Hi Syler,
Your right, I did run Combofix. Sorry, I was desperate. Won't run it again until I hear from you. I did attach the results here for your review. Thanks.

Hi Syler,
Yes, I ran this in safemode. Had to go to safe mode, because it locked up everytime I tried to run it in regular mode.

  • Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs, as this process may crash your computer.
  • Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security program drivers will not conflict with gmer's driver.
  • Double click on Gmer to run it.
  • Allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • You may see a rootkit warning window, If you do, click No.
  • Click on Posted Image and wait for the scan to finish.
  • If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
  • Push Posted Image and save the logfile to your desktop.
  • Copy and Paste the contents of that file in your next post.

I see alot of files that are usually legitimate, but they are in the wrong location, is this because of something that you have been doing?
These few are an example:

C:\eventlog.dll
C:\netlogon.dll
C:\scecli.dll

Not that I'm aware of. I ran combofix, deinstalled IE6, tried to install Malwarebytes and ran Microsofts anti Malware client. Thats it.

  • Please download Junction.zip and save it, then unzip the contents to your desktop.
  • Go to Start >> Run, then Copy and paste the following command in the run box and click Ok.

    cmd /c "%userprofile%\desktop\junction.exe" -s c:\ >log.txt&log.txt& del log.txt

  • A command window opens starting to scan the system. Wait until the log file log.txt opens. Copy and paste the contents in your next reply.

We need to reset the permissions of some files and folders, that have been altered by malware.
  • Download Inherit.exe and save it on your Desktop.
  • Locate each of these files, then drag them and drop them, onto Inherit.exe

c:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Crypto\RSA\MachineKeys\3ad391678a806ec4d691e83aaa393b6f_5b150187-0f05-4c72-917c-77c8e6964ac4
c:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE

  • when finished click OK. You may remove Inherit.exe from your desktop.

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

3. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

File::
C:\winlogon.exe
C:\Userinit.vbs
C:\taskkill.exe
C:\scecli.dll
C:\Prerun.txt
C:\netlogon.dll
C:\eventlog.dll
C:\a.vbs
c:\windows\win32k.sys
Registry::
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System]
"DisableTaskMgr"=-
"DisableCMD"=-
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\security center\Monitoring\McAfeeAntiVirus]
"DisableMonitoring"=dword:00000000
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\security center\Monitoring\McAfeeFirewall]
"DisableMonitoring"=dword:00000000
Driver::
inlnoisvmputerci

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

Posted Image

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.

OK, got inherit onto the desktop and unfortunately, I am being prevented from dragging and dropping any files to the icon. I was able to the first file as I right clicked and used the inherit program to "open with". Should I still move onto Combofix? Unfortunately, I will also be prevented from dragging and dropping combofix.txt.
