Good Evening!
My name is Jack and i'm new to the forum. I'm using Window Vista Business, McAfee antivirus... A few days ago, my firefox browser started to acting strange, everytime i tried to open a webpage, a IE would pop up and go to some Antivirus or ads websites...Also my google search results keep redirecting me to some weird website (pretty much like KBWood here: http://forums.techguy.org/malware-removal-...-redirects.html ). I'd tried many programs like Malwarebytes, Spyware search and destroy or SuperAntispyware but could only got rid of the IE pop-up. I'm no IT expert, so any help would be really appreciated!
Here is my HJT log:

bump!!! anyone?

Hello Ryorujii,

While we understand your frustration at having to wait, please note that Bleeping Computer deals with several hundred requests for assistance such as yours on a daily basis. As a result, our backlog is quite large, as are other comparable sites that help others with malware issues. Athough our HJT Team members work on hundreds of requests each day, they are all volunteers who work logs when they can and are able to do so. No one is paid by Bleeping Computer for their assistance to our members.

Further, our malware removal staff is comprised of team members with various levels of skill and expertise to deal with thousands of malware variants, some more complex than others. Although we try to take DDS/HJT logs in order (starting with the oldest), it is often the skill level of the particular helper and sometimes the operating system that dictates which logs get selected first. Some infections are more complicated than others and require a higher skill level to remove. Without that skill level attempted removal could result in disastrous results. In other instances, the helper may not be familiar with the operating system that you are using, since they use another. In either case, you wouldn't want someone to assist you who is not familiar with your issue and attempt to fix it, would you?

We ask that once you have posted your log and are waiting, please DO NOT "bump" your thread or make further replies until it has been responded to by a member of the HJT Team. The reason we ask this or do not respond to your requests is because that would remove you from the active queue that Techs and Staff have access to. The malware staff checks the forum for postings that have 0 replies as this makes it easier for them to identify those who have not been helped. If you post another response, there will be 1 reply. A team member, looking for a new log to work may assume another HJT Team member is already assisting you and not open the thread to respond.

That is why I have made an edit to your last post, instead of a reply. Please do not multiple post here, as that only pushes you further down the queue and causes confusion to the staff.

Please be patient. It may take a while to get a response but your log will be reviewed and answered as soon as possible.

Thank you for understanding.

Regards,

The weatherman

Hello Blade81,

Thank you for your reply! My laptop's still having the problem, after reading the instruction I downloaded and run DDS but when I tried to run Root Repeal I got this error:

ROOTREPEAL CRASH REPORT
-------------------------
Windows Version: Windows Vista SP2
Exception Code: 0xc0000094
Exception Address: 0x004eca19

Well I tried to delete the file and download it again but no luck. Any suggestion?

Here's my DDS log:

Please start RootRepeal, and, before doing anything else, try changing the "Disk Access Level" in the Settings->Options dialog. Try moving it to the "Special" or "High" level. Also, click on the Files tab, and uncheck "Use lowest level for MBR check". See if that helps Rootrepeal to run.

Hi Blade81,
Thanks again for your quick reply!

Actually, this morning I could not even start Root Repeal, let alone change the setting.
When I got home this afternoon, I tried download and start the program again but I got this message:

"Could not load drive (0xc0000035)!" and still could not run it.

What should I do next?

Let's see if GMER runs better.

Download GMER here by clicking download exe -button and then saving it your desktop:
  • Double-click .exe that you downloaded
  • Click rootkit-tab and then scan.
  • Don't check
    Show All
    box while scanning in progress!
  • When scanning is ready, click Copy.
  • This copies log to clipboard
  • Post log in your reply.

Hi Blade81,

GMER does not work for me either.
I download it to desktop, and run it, but whenever the scan reach this item:"\Devices\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy1" it stop working immediately.
And when I try to launch GMER again, my laptop suddenly shutdown and restart by itself.
Also the redirection seems to gotten worse, before if I refresh the page, the links will works normally, but now it doesn't. It's like I can't use Google search anymore.

Ok. Since there's already ComboFix present there launch it (make sure protection software is disabled first) and let it update itself. Post back its log & fresh dds.txt log.

The disk check took longer than I'd expect. Eset online scan found 2 infected items but I still haven't removed them, but there's no scan report (only the list of 2 infected files)

Here's the new DDS log:

Hi,

Delete those two ESET findings. How's the system running now? Any original symptoms left?

Hi Blade81,
Thank you very much!
My system is running fine now. Last night, i tried to search on google for a while and the redirection did not happen. Do I need to do any final touch?
By the way, may I ask what was the thing that infected my laptop? and did it block Gmer and RootRepeal from running?
Thanks again, you and your helps were brilliant!

You're welcome :(

Here're some final steps to follow.

THESE STEPS ARE VERY IMPORTANT

Let's reset system restore
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected. Please note you need Administrator Access to do clean the restore points.

A To disable the System Restore feature:

1. Click on the Start button.
2. Hover over the Computer option, right click on it and then click Properties.
3. On the left hand side, click Advanced Settings.
4. If asked to permit the action, click on Allow.
5. Click on the System Protection tab.
6. Uncheck any checkboxes listed for your hard drives.
7. Press OK.

B. Reboot.

C Turn ON System Restore.
Follow the steps like you did when disabling system restore but on step 6. check any checkboxes listed for your hard drives.

Now lets uninstall ComboFix:
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now copy-paste Combofix /uninstall in the runbox and click OK
Next we remove all used tools.

Please download OTC and save it to desktop.
  • Double-click OTC.exe.
  • Click the CleanUp! button.
  • Select Yes when the
    Begin cleanup Process?
    prompt appears.
  • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
  • The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.
Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTC attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.

UPDATING WINDOWS AND INTERNET EXPLORER

IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and Internet Explorer to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the Internet. Please go to the windows update site to get the critical updates.

If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure

This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.

The following are recommended third party programs that are designed to keep your computer clean. A link as well as a brief description is included with each item.
  • hosts file:
  • Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them.
  • In a very basic sense, they are used to locate webpages.
  • We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain webpages.
  • However, it can slow down certain computers.
  • This is why using a hosts file is optional!!
Download it here. Make sure you read the instructions on how to install the hosts file. There is a good tutorial here
If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:
  • Click the start button (at the lower left hand corner of your screen)
  • Click run
  • In the dialog box, type services.msc
  • hit enter, then locate dns client
  • Highlight it, then double-click it.
  • On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual.
  • Click ok

Just a final reminder for you. I am trying to stress these two points.
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE!!! Make sure you do this about every 1-2 weeks.
Make sure all of your security programs are up to date.
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Once again, please post and tell me how things are going with your system... problems etc.

Have a great day,
Blade :(

By the way, may I ask what was the thing that infected my laptop? and did it block Gmer and RootRepeal from running?

It seems you had tdss rootkit there. It's a bit hard to say what caused it without knowing what was done with the system right before the infection.
