few days back i had a browser hijack. when i search for something using google toolbar or google search (on both ie and firefox) some of the links dont work and a get a message that the wepage cannot be displayed. i have used spybot search and destroy, malwarebytes anti-malware, bitdefender online scan to try and fix it but the problem has not gone away. i would appreciate it a lot if you can help me solve this problem. i have pasted the dds log in this message and have attached the dds attach and root repeal ark files.
Thanks.

Hi
Thanks for the reply. I am attaching two files generated by DDS as you requested. I should also let you know that i ran combo fix yesterday and while scanning it sent out a message saying "detected root kit activity" and asked for a restart. Upon doing this it continued scanning but somewhere in between it gave me the "blue screen of death". I did a hard reset and it logged back in. After this I have not noticed any browser hijack problems. However I am still concerned if the problem has really gone away . So any help you can provide will be greatly appreciated.
PS: When i tried to go to the safe mode while trying to fix the problem , it would stop at loading mup.sys and give me the blue screen. I am not sure if this related to the problem. But just thought I will let you know
Thanks

Hello, and :( to Bleeping Computer Malware Removal Forum, My Nick is Net_Surfer I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not solve other issues you may have with your machine.

Sorry about the delay, but the amount of people posting with infected computers is through the roof and sometimes we can't get to logs as fast as we would like to.

I would also like to inform you that most of us here at Bleeping Computer offer our expert assistance out of the goodness of our hearts. Please be courteous and appreciative for the assistance provided!

Please note that whatever repairs we make, are for fixing "your computer problems only" and by no means should be used on another computer.

Please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

The cleaning process is not instant. DDS, ComboFix, RSIT logs can take some time to research, so please be patient with me. I know that you need your computer working as quickly as possible, and I will work hard to help see that happen.

1. Please reply using the Posted Image button in the lower right hand corner of your screen. Do not start a new topic.
2. The logs that you post should be pasted directly into the reply. Only attach them if requested or if they do not fit into the post.
3. All of my posts need to be checked by my coach before they are posted here your benefit will be "four eyes and two brains" looking into your problem, but my responses may be somewhat delayed so please be patient while I attempt to remove your malware.
4. Unfortunately, if I do not hear back from you within 5 days, I will be forced to close your topic. If you still need help after I have closed your topic, send me or a moderator a personal message with the address of the thread or feel free to create a new one.

I should also let you know that i ran combo fix yesterday and while scanning it sent out a message saying "detected root kit activity" and asked for a restart. Upon doing this it continued scanning but somewhere in between it gave me the "blue screen of death".

Combofix is a very complex and dangerous tool. It is not a one size fit all tool and it is not automatically removing what needs to be removed by itself. It is like a scalpel in the hands of a surgeon. A surgeon can remove exactly what is need and no more while an untrained person would either cut too much or not enough.

Posted ImageCombofix is powerful enough to be able to render your computer unbootable if used wrongly or to leave your computer infected if you do not know what you are doing..
You should NOT use Combofix unless you have been instructed. It is intended by its creator to be used under the guidance and supervision of a Malware Removal Expert. Using this tool incorrectly could lead to disastrous problems with your operating system such as preventing it from ever starting again.

Please read Combofix's Disclaimer.

Since you ran the combofix tool I need to see if it removed anything, I need you to retrieve the log it created. It should be located at:

C:\combofix.txt

Please copy and paste the log back here for my review.

In the meantime Please refrain from making any changes to your system (updating Windows, installing applications, removing files, etc.) from now on as it might prolong handling your log and make the job for both of us more difficult..

Please give me some time to review your logs and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay
.

Kind regards

Hello again John1999, :)

Sorry for the delay.

The forum is exceptionally busy. I have reviewed your logs and proposed a fix. I am patiently waiting for my coach to approve the clean-up. :(

If possible I would encourage you to minimize use of that computer until we can get it cleaned up. I appreciate your patience.

Regards,
Net_Surfer

Hello John1999, :)

Sorry for the delay

There is a program installed in your machine:

KeyLoggerWithDatabaseConnection

I need to ask you if you knowingly installed this program???

Here is a descriptions of the things that this programs do:

A Key logger is a software application that runs in the background and records any keyboard activity. Logged information is stored in the machine and can be retrieved later by the attacker through the internet connection. Key loggers can record sensitive information such as passwords, credit card numbers, personal identification numbers, etc. Key loggers are commonly included as parts of other spyware programs.

Please lets do another rootkit scan:

:( Please download GMER from one of the following locations and save it to your desktop:
  • Main Mirror
This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)
  • Zipped Mirror
This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.
  • Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
  • Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security programs will not conflict with gmer's driver.
  • Double-click on the randomly named GMER file (i.e. n7gmo46c.exe) and allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • Note: If you downloaded the zipped version, extract the file to its own folder such as C:\gmer and then double-click on gmer.exe.

    Posted Image
  • GMER will open to the Rootkit/Malware tab and perform an automatic quick scan when first run. (do not use the computer while the scan is in progress)
  • If you receive a WARNING!!! about rootkit activity and are asked to fully scan your system...click NO.
  • Now click the Scan button. If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save... button to save the scan results to your Desktop. Save the file as gmer.log.
  • Click the Copy button and paste the results into your next reply.
  • Exit GMER and re-enable all active protection when done.
-- If you encounter any problems, try running GMER in Safe Mode.

Please reply back with the answer to my question about the keylooger program and the report log of Gmer

Upon completing the above steps I will review your logs again and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

Kind regards
Net_Surfer

Hi Netsurfer,
the keylogger with database connection is something that i installed and not a rogue program.

i will not be at the infected computer for the next 2-3 weeks. i will run the steps you detailed after that and post the log.
