My computer has recently been attacked by this virus that won't let me open most programs or antivirus software and redirects me to random websites when I follow any Google link. It's really annoying and basically makes my computer useless.

The only thing that was able to scan my PC was Dr. Web Cureit which told me I had a "Win32.Virut.56".

Apparently this is a bad thing and I was told that I have to reformat and reinstall Windows.

I am currently running XP and have no idea how to do this...

and since I have to reinstall Windows I figured I might as well upgrade to 7 which I think I can get for $30.

So my question for BC is: How do I remove this virus (and XP) and upgrade to Windows 7?

I believe the $30 price for Win 7 only applies to students. Personnel in the Win 7 forum can probably provide more info on that and other questions re Windows 7.

You can use the appropriate Windows 7 disk to delete any existing partition...and the format/install Win 7.

FWIW: It doesn't relate to your current situation...but XP users who "upgrade" to Windows 7...must do a clean install, rather than installing on top of their XP installs.

Change the boot order in the BIOS/setup...so that the optical drive is the first boot device.

Insert the Windows 7 DVD...delete the existing partition...create a new partition/install Windows 7.

I don't have my Windows 7 disk yet, but I'm assuming it acts just like the XP disk. I do have the RC1 DVD and that's how it workes.
