I have in my possesion, a micorsoft windows xp proffesional with service pack 2.
I believe it is the system installation cd, it also says june 2006 systems student media/ at home media.

now.

I have an old desktop sitting around. it currently has xp only. I would love to clean install the xp pro
cd. Has anyone attempted this? if it's possible i would love to try. thanks.

You could always get a different HD and give it a try then you have a fallback if it dont work.

hmm after a bit more research it appears this is given to students?
so the product key man no longer work? if this is illegal let me know.
i will stop. i have the product key it's here on the folder it came in.
so if the student is no longer enrolled it is illegal? She is. and it's for her computer
if that clears anything up.

-thanks

If you want to test whether the cd works, try it on VirtualPC first. If it works only then install it on a real hard disk.

After installing Windows, get online and install WGA updates. If the product key is illegal, WGA notifications will appear and tell you that you are using a possibly pirated copy of XP. If that happens format the hard disk to remove Windows.

Or if i had space i could just try it out on some unused space. i'm more concerned now with whether this is an upgrade or a full version.
in addiction
on the folder beneath the serial key it clearly says
"You may only install this full version of window Only on desktops for which you have aquired:
a quailifying operating system liscence, and a volume liscensing windows xp proffesional upgrade liscence, or
a full liscence for windows xp proffesional through an OEM or from a retail store source (full package product)
which leads me to believe it is an upgradable cd.
which is not okay i gather because I'm running xp only not pro now.
hmmm... kind of sucks, the main reason is to fresh install even if i could xp I would but this
thing has been in a closet for a while with no strings attached. ie no system cds whatsoever.

any suggestions?

my bad i just turned it on for the first time a year or so, it is in fact xp pro with sp2 ha. i've got to have a yard sale and get rid of some of these things.
hopefully this will help, yet i understand for the clean install to student media, i would need the xp pro sp2 disc? to verify i have a legal version already?

You can try it on Virtual PC, if its upgrade only, you would get error during install. If its full install, it would install to the end.
From the statement you posted, it appears to have upgrade and full license both.

Install Virtual PC on your faster newer computer, then you can try this CD and see what it does:

Yes
Even if you install VirtualPC on new computer, you can just delete vmc and vhd files and uninstall VPC and all is gone.

If you don't have a valid license to go with that CD, you are not authorized to use it.

If it belonged to someone else and the license key has been activated on their system...any attempt to activate it again will probably result in the license being declared compromised by the MS activation personnel. Which could result in an unpleasant scenario for the person to whom such CD was originally issued.

Since it's a student license...if you aren't the student it was issued to...you have no legal basis to install it on any system.

Well...it doesn't matter if your wife is the person it was issued to, she's entitled to install it .

I find that these sorts of questions are best answered by...just trying it. Nothing evil can come of such, the worst thing that can happen is no activation, which merely puts you back to where you are now :flowers:.

Are you aware that since your wife is a student she should be able get a copy of Windows 7 for 29.99?
