Well, here's the deal. Over the past week, we've run all the good free programs (AdAware SE, Spybot, and I even tried Microsoft's Anti-Spyware.) All of the programs detected and cleaned various things, including:

eXact.BargainBuddy, SurfSide Kick, osoa.exe, Adware.ZioCom.B, eXact.Downloader, CashBack, Bullseye Network, Media Tickets, CDT Software, 1800Solutions, E2Give, Midaddle, Searchmiracle.EliteBar, and MANY others.

Eventually, after running all the programs, they all come up clean, but the pop ups and ads come back. There's something missing, but we're not sure what. (It's not my computer, as it's someone else in the office, so I'm not sure what's going on down there.) Here's my log.

Welcome KingArt000 to Bleeping Computer.

You are running HijackThis from the Desktop.
Create a new folder for it and move the program into the new folder.

You may want to print or save these instructions locally before starting.

Please download, install, and update the free version of Ewido trojan scanner:
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
  • Run Ewido --- When you run it for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
  • From the main ewido screen, click on update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
  • After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
  • Exit Ewido. DO NOT scan yet.
***

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site:
http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml

***

Then run HijackThis, click Scan, and place a checkmark by the following item:

F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=C:\Windows\System32\userinit.exe

O2 - BHO: LANBridge Class - {71D1708F-973D-4600-AF01-AD86688403AE} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\rwiwzelz.dll

O2 - BHO: SDWin32 Class - {977F077F-1684-480C-9286-7F4E937698AF} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\zcoep.dll

O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {2CDE1A7D-A478-4291-BF31-E1B4C16F92EB} - (no file)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [lanbrup] C:\WINDOWS\system32\lanbrup.exe

O20 - Winlogon Notify: App Management - C:\WINDOWS\system32\DUOCX.DLL

Close all open windows except for HijackThis and click Fix Checked.

***

Next, run Ewido again.
  • Click on the Scanner button in the left menu, then click on Complete System Scan. This scan can take quite a while to run.
  • If ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. We have been finding some cases of false positives with the new version of Ewido, so we need to step through the fixes one-by-one. If Ewido finds something that you KNOW is legitimate (for example, parts of AVG Antivirus, pcAnywhere and the game "Risk" have been flagged), select "none" as the action. DO NOT check "Perform action with all infections". If you are unsure of an entry, select "none" for the time being. I'll see that in the log you will post later and let you know if ewido needs to be run again.
  • When the scan finishes, click on "Save Report". This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again.
***

Reboot back in normal mode.

Post me a fresh HijackThis log and the log made by Ewido.

OK! I hadn't noticed that we were running to the desktop until you mentioned it. Duh! In any case, I followed the steps exactly, and made brand new logs for you.

Thanks for your help!

Thanks for a speedy respons!

Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

http://www.atribune.org/downloads/l2mfix.exe
http://www.downloads.subratam.org/l2mfix.exe

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

OK, it's done. You should know though, that while the program was scanning, I got like three pop up boxes saying:

16-bit MS-DOS Subsystem
______________________
C:\WINDOWS\system32\cmd.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT
The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application.

There were "Close" and "Ignore" buttons. I chose "Ignore" every time and the report generated as it was supposed to. Here it is.

L2MFIX find log 1.03

You did good

Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.

From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter, then press any key to reboot your computer. After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so!

OK, that's all finished. (Just before the end of the day too! Whew!)

Thanks for your help thus far. Hopefully we're getting close to being clean.

Here's the new logs...

Actually the computer had been running better since ewido was run that very first time. It seems to be in good shape now though, so thank you very much. I'll let you know if I have any other issues. Thanks again!

OK, I'm being told that Microsoft AntiSpyware had popped up a window this morning saying that it had detected and cleaned the following.

Adware.snbmodule
Virtual Bouncer
E2ula.weboffer
E2Give
Icannews
Trojan.service.nameshifter.a - trojan

They were all low level threats, as opposed to the high level ones that used to show up. Should I be concerned? Are these just leftover pieces? The subsequent scans came up clean.

We can check your programs to see if there's anything that needs to go.
  • Open HiJackThis
  • Click on the configure button on the bottom right
  • Click on the tab "Misc Tools"
  • Click on the Box that says "Uninstall Manager"
  • Click on the button "Save list"
  • Copy and past the List from notepad into your post
If AntiSpyware detected and cleaned them and a new scan comes back clean, I wouldn't worry that much. But I'll be happy to check an uninstall list.

Here's her uninstall list. They only two that stand out are Sysnet and LANBridge. I'm not sure what those two are. I think we're still clean though. That MS Anti-Spyware scan must have just been getting leftovers.

You may want to run this online scan:

Panda online scan

It requires an ActiveX component to download.
Save the report at the end and post it here please.
