Hello,
If anyone could help with this it would be great.
I am running Vista with no Service pack.
Attempting to update Windows Defender or Windows Update both result in the download hanging forever. When I check the update history it lets me know it was because of a 80246008 error.

So I have been googling the problem, looking on Microsoft webpage and other forums but what I found hasn't works so far I tried:
Checking

Background Inteligent Transfer Service -start DELAYED-AUTO
Changed to manual to test a start and got the a message saying it start then stopped since some services stop when not in use.

I retried:

BITS repair tool says that it is not needed at this time.

Regsvr32 QMGR.DLL - And got this error "the module "QMGR.DLL" was loaded but the entry-point
DllRegisterServer was not found. Make sure that "QMGR.DLL" is a valid DLL or OCX file and then try again"

Regsvr32 wuaueng.dll - And got this "the module wuaueng.dll" was loaded but the call to DLLregisterserver failed with error code 0x8007005.

Windows Update - start AUTO
Was on Delayed auto so I changed it to AUTO.
Starting it works fine.

Cryptographic Service - start AUTO
Starting it works fine.

Windows Modules Installer - start MANUAL
Starting it works fine.

Still cant update.

Thanks for your time.

Have you tried using CMD to reset your WUPS !

If life is not an option then why are we not given the option in the first place !

Ok I tried using the kb/971058 from M$ webpage to reset, however when I get to trying to stop the wuauserv it gives the error "System error 5 has occurred Access is denied"

I am logged in under the administrator account so I don't know whats going on there.

Try this it has worked for others in the past :

start/run: services.msc
double click on: Background Intelligent Transfer Service
change it to manual, and then click start ..if you get 2147024891 error..

Delete the two files in:

C:\Documents and
Settings\AllUsers\ApplicationData\Microsoft\Networ k\Downloader

run the start in the Background Intelligent Transfer Service

If that dosen't work go to this link and follow instructions http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows...-error-80246008

Also failing that try this option, sorry for all this but thte only way to try and get you sorted we have to try everything we can !

Rename the SoftwareDistribution folder. (Because of possible folder
corruption or other errors.)
Click Start, Choose Run.
In the Run box, type services.msc.
Click OK.
Right-click the Automatic Updates service.
Click Stop.
Stopping the service will take a moment.

Rename the "SoftwareDistribution" folder:
a. Click Start, click Run, type %systemroot%, and then click OK.
b. Right-click the SoftwareDistribution folder, and then click Rename.
c. Type SoftwareDistribution.old, and then press ENTER to rename this
folder.
Create a new folder called "SoftwareDistribution"
Click Start. Choose Run.
In the Run box, type services.msc.
Click OK.
Right-click the Automatic Updates service.
Click Start.
Starting the service will take a moment.
Rerun Windows Update.

If for some reason the " Software Distribution " folder won't allow you to change it's name you will have to take ownership of the folder either manually or dare i say it if you search about on the net enough you can actually downlod a file called " Take Ownership " which does it for you !

 Thanks loads man, I used your fix of deleting the two files from the downloader folder, tested BITS and it finally started up with out saying it started then stopped.

Then I used [codebox]http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058[/codebox] and finally got the wuauserv fixed with there fixit program just had to manualy stop wuauserv then wait /real/ long for it to finally stop completely.

Rebooted and tried a download with windows update and it went through fine not even a second of hang time opening the updater, before it used to take 20 mins - 1/2 an hour to open windows update.

 Thanks alot for you time and help.
