Got a popup from Windows Defender this morning indicating a possible "serious" Trojan infection. Because I am suspicious by nature, I did not click on the popup; instead I went to the Control Panel and opened Windows Defender manually, and ran a Quick Scan. The scan did indicate one possible infection, called "winwebsec", which Windows Defender quarantined. I then launched Task Manager to see if any shady processes were running, and found an entry for "_ex-08.exe", which is apparently malware. I have not seen any other signs of infection--no odd OS or browser behavior, no new icons on desktop.

Following the instructions for posting to this forum, I ran dds.scr and generated the two reports. I also generated a HijackThis log, if anyone wants to see it. I then downloaded and ran RootRepeal.exe, but my system blue-screened while RootRepeal was trying to launch. I've never seen a blue screen on Vista before... scary. Since the computer was rebooting anyway, I restarted in Safe Mode, which seemed to work fine--that's where I'm currently at. _ex-08.exe does not currently appear in the Task Manager as a running process, and RootRepeal now launches successfully, and I am currently running it, but it's taking a REALLY long time to scan. Like, going on three and a half hours now. I don't know if that's normal or not, but it doesn't appear to be frozen. Sometimes it stops for a long time on one particular folder, but each time I've waited it out, and eventually it moves on.

In the meantime, I wanted to at least post the DDS and Attach files, to get feedback on those. I'll add the results of the RootRepeal scan when it eventually finishes (assuming that it does). To reiterate, DDS.txt and Attach.txt were generated prior to rebooting in Safe Mode...
