Hi all,I have a pretty annoying situation..

A few days ago I installed The Sims 2 Double Deluxe. As soon as it was finished I played it for about an hour or so,exited the game and shut down my computer. The next day,I went to play it,and for some reason it refuses to launch now. The farthest it gets is to the launch screen, but after I hit "play" nothing happens. No error messages,no warning sounds, nothing. I hear my computer working like it should, but then it just stops for an unknown reason.I even watched it through Task Manager, and the application for the game just quits.

I've spoken with EA tech support, and they've determined the game is crashing. They've had me empty my Temp folder, stop all unnecessary tasks, and even update my video card driver. So far nothing has worked. Then after a day or so,I decided to try to launch the game for the hell of it,and it worked. Played it for a few hours, until it did infact crash with an error message.Tried re-launching,and it had gone back to not working again.

Now from what I've deducted, and if the game really is crashing on start-up,I dont see how it could be related to my video card driver being out of date. Because when I do play it there are NO issues whatsoever with gameplay. Another possibility it could be crashing is memory problems, but I have 16 GB free on my hard drive. Then theres sound, but, again, can't be that as my sound card is up-to-date.

I've tried everything I can think of so far,and what I'm not getting is why does it work sometimes, but then other times it doesn't?

I appreciate any help I can get.

<<...but I have 16 GB free on my hard drive>>

Memory doesn't exist on a hard drive, storage space does.

Under certain conditions a minor part of the hard drive can be used for memory purposes, but I don't think this is a recommendation for anyone who wants to play games on a system.

Right-click on My Computer and select Properties.

List the 4 lines underneath Computer.

If bonafide support personnel told you that your video card isn't up to the task...I suggest taking their word for it unless you are sure that they are wrong.

Minimum System Requirements for The Sims 2

If you have a T&L capable video card with at least 32 MB of video RAM then you need at least:

* 800 MHz processor or better
* 256 MB RAM if Windows Vista, XP, Windows ME, Windows 98 or Windows 2000
* At least 3.5 GB of hard drive space

If you have a non-T&L capable video card (an Intel Extreme Graphics or a Radeon 7000/VE Series) then you need at least:

* 2.0 GHz processor or better
* 256 MB RAM if Windows Vista, XP, Windows ME, Windows 98, or Windows 2000
* At least 3.5 GB of hard drive space

Get the most current driver for your video card. The manufacturers usually have the video drivers on their sites for you to download. Visit the nVidia site, the ATI site or the support site for your computer's manufacturer for the latest drivers for those video cards.

Supported video cards (and the more video memory the better):

* ATI RadeonTM series (7000 or better)
o Radeon 7000/VE series (non-T&L; requires 2.0 GHz processor)
o 7200, 7500
o 8500, All-In-Wonder 8500
o 9000, 9200, 9500, 9600, 9700, 9800
o X300, X600, X800

* Nvidia QuadroTM series
o Quadro, Quadro2, Quadro4

* Nvidia Geforce series (GeForce2 and better)
o GeForce2
o GeForce3, 3 Ti
o GeForce4, 4Ti, MX 420, 440
o GeForce FX 5200, 5600, 5700, 5800, 5900, 5950
o GeForce 6600, 6800

* Intel Extreme Graphics (non-T&L; requires 2.0 GHz processor)
o 82845, 82865, 82915

I had the same situation occur and fell well within the Minimum System Requirements for The Sims 2.
I ended up unistalling ,rebooting and then reinstalled ..but this time I shut down my anti virus (AVG) before the install. Then rebooted after the install and it played fine.
Hope it helps
Bob
