Hi

I have a Sony Vaio Laptop in a very poor state....

Won't boot into safe mode or command prompt, just stays on black background with cursor........

The Laptop totally hung whilst running Super Anti Spyware, clock was frozen so only a cold reboot was possible, SAS was actually warning trojan found when it hung but unfortunately I did not get the name of it....I know very dizzy of me not to write down....

Tried an XP Pro repair but gets to installation process & the STOP error appears & Laptop remains unuesable....No history of hardware or hanging issues whatsoever...

Have now backed up data onto extermal drive by booting from an "Ultimate Boot CD"

Ran DDS from ext drive but as Laptop booted from bootable CD not much info at all, can post if necessary but info seems pretty irrelevant.....

Attempted running RootRepeal but totally failed, suspect needs PC to boot from safe mode....

I could really do without carrying out a fresh install as I am not confident I have all data backed up & may lose some, so
any help will be highly appreciated to hopefully get the Laptop back up & running without a format...

Thanks in advance for any advice.....

Possibly relevant, Black Screen (fixmbr) - http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;314503 .

A STOP error during an attempted repair install...would suggest a hard drive problem or a RAM problem to me, depending on the onscreen message.
