I'm hoping you are able to help me. I've had this infection before, when I rebooted, it prevented me from going online and getting help. I had to reformat. I tried running Spybot and Ad-Aware to try to get rid of it.

The dialog box says "Potentially dangerous software.These programs may damage your computer and steal your private information.Onlines scan should install Total Security utilities to fix your pc. Please click OK to download and install Total Security tool."

If I try to close it, it starts the scan anyway. In Windows Task Manager, it doesn't say that it's running, even though the dialog box is open.

Here's my Hijack this log:

Hi and welcome to the HijackThis Logs and Virus/Trojan/Spyware/Malware Removal forum,

I am Posted Image and I am here to help you!

I ask that you refrain from running tools other than those I suggest to you while I am cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so I know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.

Please perform all steps in the order received and do not proceed if you need clarification.

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. By doing this and then choosing Immediate E-Mail notification and then clicking on Proceed you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

After 5 days if a topic is not replied to we assume it has been abandoned and it is closed.

I would also like to inform you that most of us here at Bleeping Computer offer our expert assistance out of the goodness of our hearts. Please be courteous and appreciative for the assistance provided!

==========

We need to create an OTL Report
  • Please download OTL from one of the following mirrors:
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  • Under "Extra Registry" please check "Use Safelist" and also check "LOP Check" and "Purity Check" as pictured.Posted Image
  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • Two reports will open, copy and paste them in a reply here:
    • OTListIt.txt <-- Will be opened
    • Extra.txt <-- Will be minimized
==========

Please download GMER from one of the following locations and save it to your desktop:
  • Main Mirror
    This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)
  • Zipped Mirror
    This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.
  • Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
  • Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security programs will not conflict with gmer's driver.
  • Double-click on the randomly named GMER file (i.e. n7gmo46c.exe) and allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • Note: If you downloaded the zipped version, extract the file to its own folder such as C:\gmer and then double-click on gmer.exe.

    Posted Image
  • GMER will open to the Rootkit/Malware tab and perform an automatic quick scan when first run. (do not use the computer while the scan is in progress)
  • If you receive a WARNING!!! about rootkit activity and are asked to fully scan your system...click NO.
  • Now click the Scan button. If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save... button to save the scan results to your Desktop. Save the file as gmer.log.
  • Click the Copy button and paste the results into your next reply.
  • Exit GMER and re-enable all active protection when done.
-- If you encounter any problems, try running GMER in Safe Mode.

==========

Again I would like to remind you to make no further changes to your computer unless I direct you to do so. Your computer fix will be based on the current condition of your computer! Any changes might delay my ability to help you.

==========

With your next post please provide:

* OTL.txt
* OTL Extra.txt
* Gmer log

Kind regards,
~t

I do not accept personal donations for assistance provided. I would ask that you instead consider donating the greatest gift - Organ Donation. Your organs are of no use to you when your gone. You will save a life that would otherwise be lost!

Below is the GMER log. It took about two hours to run it...is that normal? Or maybe I have junk other than the virus? I followed your instructions...turned off the internet, plus anything that was running. I even turned off my firewall and set the screensaver so it wouldn't come on. The only thing I couldn't close was the "Total Securities dialog box.

Your welcome :(

The Gmer scan takes a while.

Lets begin....

Please note......

:( P2P Warning :)

Your log indicates that you have Limewire & Bitorrent installed.

Avoid gaming sites, pirated software, cracking tools, keygens, and peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing programs.

- They are a security risk which can make your computer susceptible to a smörgåsbord of malware infections, remote attacks, exposure of personal information, and identity theft. Many malicious worms and Trojans spread across P2P file sharing networks, gaming and underground sites.

- Users visiting such pages may see innocuous-looking banner ads containing code which can trigger pop-up ads and malicious Flash ads that install viruses, Trojans and spyware. Ads are a target for hackers because they offer a stealthy way to distribute malware to a wide range of Internet users.

- The best way to reduce the risk of infection is to avoid these types of web sites and not use any P2P applications. Read P2P Software User Advisories and Risks of File-Sharing Technology.

Note: It is pretty much certain that if you continue to use P2P programs, then you will get infected again.
I would recommend that you uninstall Limewire & Bitorrent, however that choice is up to you. If you choose to remove these programs, you can do so via Control Panel>> Add / Remove Programs.

If you wish to keep it, please do not use it until your computer is cleaned.

==========

Please uninstall Spybot via Add/Remove for now. You can reinstall it later if you want. I will make some recommendations when we are done.

==========

Download and Run ComboFix (by sUBs)

You must rename it before saving it.

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

Save thcbytes.exe to your Desktop <-- Important!!!
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. Please refer to this link for instructions.

  • Double click on thcbytes.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Posted Image

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own.
This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

==========

With your next post please provide:

* Combofix.txt

Here is the ComboFix log. I was wrong that I had my antivirus disabled. I thought I only had to close it. Your link was very helpful. I had to restart it several times until I figured out what the problem was! Also, the "Total Securities" dialog box closed!

Good job. :(

Lets continue....................

==========

Are these files familiar to you?

c:\documents and settings\Administrator\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\IEHOME.LNK
c:\documents and settings\Default User\Local Settings\Temp\iehome.bat

I have directed Combofix to upload these files for my review. Please allow this when prompted!!

==========

I assume you have uninstalled the P2P programs so my script includes leftovers from the infection and remnants of your P2P programs. If you have not or do not plan to remove those programs please let me know before you run this script.

:( Warning: This script was specifically written and designed for this user only. Unsupervised use of this tool could render your computer unbootable permanently!! :)

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

3. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

Posted Image

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.

==========

Please download Posted Image by OldTimer to your desktop from here.
  • Open the file and close any other windows.
  • It will close all programs itself when run; make sure to let it run uninterrupted.
  • Click the Start button to begin the process. The program should not take long to finish its job.
  • After it is finished, it should reboot your machine, if not, do this yourself to ensure a complete clean.
==========

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.

MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you. Temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the definition updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
On the Scanner tab:
  • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
  • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
  • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply. Be sure to post the complete log to include the top portion which shows MBAM's database version and your operating system.
  • Exit MBAM when done.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be asked to reboot your computer so MBAM can proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

==========

With your next post please provide:

* Answer to question
* Combofix.txt
* MBAM log
* How is your computer running now?

Kind regards,
~t

No, I don't recognize those files.

Do you know where the Search Guard Plus is from? I just checked my Add/Remove Programs, and it's gone (there were two). From the info...I gather it was installed when I or my daughter put on MSN Messenger, or it could have been with one of the P2Ps?

Here's the new ComboFix log. I did uninstall Limewire and Bittorrent...I think I did it before the ComboFix.

The computer seems to be running fine. I'm not positive right now, because it's late (almost 5:00 am here) and I rebooted twice. I think the "Total Securities " infection is gone.

Nice work. :(

P2P is a nasty portal for infections. My money is on that as the culprit. The detection with MBAM are in System Restore and a false alarm. The detections in System restore only pose risk if you restore to an earlier time. I will soon guide you how to purge System restore!

Please do this........

Open Notepad.
Copy contents in the code box into Notepad and do not include the word "Code":

@ECHO OFF
IF EXIST log.txt DEL log.txt
ECHO Deleting files>>log.txt
FOR %%g in (
"c:\windows\system32\config\systemprofile\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\IEHOME.LNK"
"c:\documents and settings\Default User\Local Settings\Temp\iehome.bat") DO (
IF EXIST %%g (
ATTRIB -r -s -h %%g
DEL %%g
IF EXIST %%g (
ECHO %%g not deleted>>log.txt
) ELSE (
ECHO %%g deleted>>log.txt)
) ELSE (
ECHO %%g not found>>log.txt))
START NOTEPAD.EXE log.txt

Go to File - Save as...
Fill in the next values:
Location: Desktop
File name: del.bat
File type: All files (*.*).
Now, click Save.

Doubleclick del.bat.
Post the contents of the logfile that opens in your next reply.

OOPS...I ran the del.bat file again to try to get rid of the second file. The log now says neither were found. I didn't know it would overwrite the existing log. It found "IEHOME.LNK", but not "iehome.bat." Sorry!

Deleting files
"c:\windows\system32\config\systemprofile\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\IEHOME.LNK" not found
"c:\documents and settings\Default User\Local Settings\Temp\iehome.bat" not found

For the ESET scanner, do you have a link to copy it to my desktop, and run it from there? It wouldn't update online...says my proxy is not configured. I even killed my firewall (just Windows one). I've never had that problem...I'm on Cable internet (Shaw), so it's configured for that. They even installed my modem and router for me when I moved.

Hmmm. Are you having troubles connecting to the internet? I noticed something...

Your MBAM needs to be updated.

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware 1.41
Database version: 3010

The current version is 3015

==========

Please do this.....

- In IE: Tools Menu -> Internet Options -> Connections Tab ->Lan Settings > uncheck "use a proxy server" or reconfigure the Proxy server again in case you have set it previously.

- In Firefox in Tools Menu -> Options... -> Advanced Tab -> Network Tab -> "Settings" under Connection and uncheck the proxyserver.

Next.....

* Go to Start -> Control Panel -> Double click on Network Connections.
* Right click on your default connection (usually Local Area Connection or Wireless Network Connection) and select Properties.

* Select the General tab.
* Double click on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).

Under General tab:

- Select "Obtain an IP address automatically".
- Select "Obtain DNS server address automatically".

* Click OK twice to save the settings.
* Reboot if you had to change any setting.

Next......

* Go to start > Run copy/paste the contents of the code box excluding "code" in the run box and click OK.

cmd /c (ipconfig /all&nslookup google.com&ping -n 2 google.com&route print) >log.txt&log.txt&del log.txt
A command window opens. Wait until a log.txt file opens.

* Please copy/paste the log file in your reply.

==========

I would like you to try running ESET again now....

Please rerun MBAM and let me know if your unable to Update the database.

    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware <--- Important!!

With your next post please provide:

* ESET log
* MBAM log

I didn't have to change any of my internet/network settings. I'm on a Wireless Router...one computer...a laptop. My signal is usually low since I've moved. I didn't use to have any problems. They installed my modem and Router in the basement. I called my ISP...they figured I should try moving both. The problem is, that my phone is on cable too, and they're all connected. The internet keeps going down lately...about the last month. The ESET scanner ran this time, even though I didn't change anything. Hopefully the internet log will help.

Here it is.

Hello,

Congratulations! You now appear clean!

**********

Please pay particularly close attention to the instructions that follow. To neglect these steps risk needless reinfection!!

**********

Are things running okay? Do you have any more questions?

**********

Uninstall Combofix
  • Press the Windows Key + R on your keyboard.
  • Now copy & paste the green bolded text in the run-box and click OK.

    ComboFix /Uninstall

    <Notice the space between the "x" and "/".>

  • The following will implement some very important cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points.
**********

Run OTL again

We will now remove the tools we used during this fix using OTL.
  • Double click the OTL icon to start the program.
  • Then Click the big Posted Image button.
  • You will get a prompt saying "Being Cleanup Process". Please select Yes.
  • Restart your computer when prompted.
**********

Recommendations
Below are some recommendations to lower your chances of (re)infection.
  • Install an Anti-Spyware program, and update it regularly
    Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is an excellent Anti-Spyware scanner. It's scan times are usually under ten minutes, and has excellent detection and removal rates.
    SUPERAntiSpyware is another good scanner with high detection and removal rates.
    Both programs are free for non commercial home use but provide a resident and do not nag if you purchase the paid versions.
  • Prevention article : To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections please read the Prevention artice by Miekiemoes.
  • Keep Windows (and your other Microsoft software) up to date!
    I cannot stress how important this is enough. Often holes are found in Internet Explorer or Windows itself that require patching. Sometimes these holes will allow an attacker unrestricted access to your computer.

    Windows XP
    Visit the Microsoft Update Website and follow the on screen instructions to setup Microsoft Update. Also follow the instructions to update your system. Please REBOOT and repeat this process until there are no more updates to install!!
  • Keep your other software up to date as well. Software does not need to be made by Microsoft to be insecure. Download Secunia Software Inspector to keep all your software up to date.
  • Stay up to date!
    The MOST IMPORTANT part of any security setup is keeping the software up to date. Malware writers release new variants every single day. If your software updates don't keep up, then the malware will always be one step ahead. Not a good thing :(.
**********

System Slow?
You may wish to try StartupLite. Simply download this tool to your desktop and run it. It will explain any optional auto-start programs on your system, and offer the option to stop these programs from starting at startup. This will result in fewer programs running when you boot your system, and should improve preformance.
If that does not work, you can try the steps mentioned in Slow Computer/browser? Check Here First; It May Not Be Malware.

Good luck & safe surfing,
Regards,

Thank you for all your help...I really appreciate it! I have automatic updates for my Windows enabled, but I checked just in case (none). I ran StartupLite and installed Secuna. It loads at start-up...should I leave it?

One Final Question...I still have TFC.exe on my desktop and a new file in My Documents (desktop.ini). What should I do about those?

Your welcome.

Your choice.

I still have TFC.exe on my desktop and a new file in My Documents (desktop.ini). What should I do about those?

Ok to delete the TFC.exe. The desktop.ini is related to this and harmless. No need to do anything.
