My computer got infected by all sorts of spyware/adware/popups. I've removed almost all bad programs/files/registry keys using safe mode and ad-aware/spyware doctor. For some reason spybot gets stuck and does not complete. There was some sort of toolbar added to my IE last time I opened it, and that would let all sorts of stuff come through. Since I was able to stabilize the system so I could better troubleshoot it, I disconnected from the network. I haven't opened IE since then.

From reading other posts and looking at my computers behavior here are some things I noticed that may help you.
1. I seem to have the nail.exe / shell problem that I see in some of your postings
2. I have a pqnrao.exe process that when stopped re appears on it's own. Also another 7digit exe that seems to regenerate a new name/exe every time it is killed.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Here is my hijack this log file.

Hello yudiann and welcome to the BC malware forum. After reviewing your log I see a few items that require our attention. Please print these directions and then proceed with the following steps in order.

Step #1

Download and install ewido security suite. Update the program and then close it. Do not run it yet.

Download nailfix.zip and unzip it to its own folder.

Step #2

Now we need to remove some services.

Open Notepad and Copy/Paste the contents of the quote box below into the new document:

Const title = "Service Removal Tool"

Set oWS = CreateObject("Wscript.Shell")
sService = inputbox("Removing Service:",title,"Windows VisFx Components")

If sService = "" then
msgbox "Script halted. No changes were made.", vbInformation, title
wscript.quit
End If

strComputer = "."
Set objWMIService = GetObject("winmgmts:{impersonationLevel=impersonate}!\\" & strComputer & "\root\cimv2")
Set colListOfServices = objWMIService.ExecQuery _
("Select * from Win32_Service Where Name = '" & sService & "' or displayName = '" & sService & "'")
If colListOfServices.count > 0 Then
For Each objService In colListOfServices
objService.StopService()
wscript.Sleep 10000
objService.ChangeStartMode("Disabled")
wscript.Sleep 2000
objService.Delete()
Msgbox "The " & sService & " service has been removed or marked for deletion.", vbInformation, title
Next
Else
Msgbox "The " & sService & " service was not found.", vbInformation, title
End If

Save the file to your desktop as remsvc.vbs and close Notepad. Locate the remsvc.vbs file on your desktop and double-click on it to run it. Click the Ok button and wait for a messge box saying the service has been removed or marked for deletion.

Restart remsvc.vbs and this time type ISEXEng into the editbox for the service to remove and then click the Ok button. Again, wait for the final message.

Step #3

Start in Safe Mode Using the F8 method:
  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the boot menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu item.
  • Press the Enter key.
Step #4

Navigate to the folder you unzipped nailfix.zip into and double-click on nailfix.cmd. Your desktop and icons will disappear and reappear, and a window should open and close very quickly --- this is normal.

Step #5

Start ewido and do the following:
  • Click on the Scanner button.
  • Click on the Complete System Scan.
  • If anything is found you will be prompted to clean the first infected file found. Choose Clean and put a checkmark in the checkbox for Perform action on all infections and click the Ok button to continue the scan.
  • When the scan is complete close ewido and reboot the computer normally.
Step #6

Start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [winsync] C:\WINDOWS\System32\pqnrao.exe reg_run
O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {6685509E-B47B-4f47-8E16-9A5F3A62F683} - file://C:\Program Files\Ebates_MoeMoneyMaker\Sy350\Tp350\scri350a.htm (file missing) (HKCU)
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{43B5A280-4516-4574-84A2-38B8AB087808}: NameServer = 195.95.218.1,85.255.112.7
O17 - HKLM\System\CS1\Services\Tcpip\..\{43B5A280-4516-4574-84A2-38B8AB087808}: NameServer = 195.95.218.1,85.255.112.7
O17 - HKLM\System\CS2\Services\Tcpip\..\{43B5A280-4516-4574-84A2-38B8AB087808}: NameServer = 195.95.218.1,85.255.112.7
O17 - HKLM\System\CS3\Services\Tcpip\..\{43B5A280-4516-4574-84A2-38B8AB087808}: NameServer = 195.95.218.1,85.255.112.7
O18 - Filter: text/html - {8293D547-38DD-4325-B35A-F1817EDFA5FC} - C:\Program Files\Cas\Client\casmf.dll

Now close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

Step #7

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
Find the following files/folders and delete them (don't worry if they are already gone):C:\WINDOWS\urdisvc.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\angelex.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\pqnrao.exe
c:\windows\system32\hzqnbcx.exe
C:\Program Files\Ebates_MoeMoneyMaker\ <--folder
C:\Program Files\Cas\ <--folder

Step #8

OK. Reboot your computer normally, start HijackThis and perform a new scan. Use the Add Reply button to post your new log file back here along with details of any problems you encountered performing the above steps and I will review it when it comes in.

Summary

Step 1
Successful

Step 2
I ran the nailfix twice successfully. The first time it was the default service, the second time ISEXEng.

Step 3
Successful

Step 4
Successful

Step 5
Ewido said it could not remove a file WSN.exe because it is embedded in an archive. It asked if I wanted to remove the archive, I said yes.

Step 6
I ran HJT and deleted the objects from your list that were still there. I also deleted the random 7 digit exe file that was being generated with every reboot or everytime you killed the old process.

Step 7
I checked for all the files and folders in your list, but they were all gone (probably because I attacked my computer all day yesterday).

Step 8
After the first reboot, I got an ewido alert:
File bldogt.exe
Path: C:\windows\system32
Infection: Adware.BetterInternet
I clicked on Block and Clean.
I also disabled it from my startup programs using my Startup Cop tool.
After another reboot, Ewido was happy and the running processes were finally gone.
I will post the HJT log. I havent started IE (or connected to the network) because Im scared it will all come back and Im using my laptop. Let me know if you think its safe. What is the "Hosts: localhost 127.0.0.1 entry"?

Hi yudiann. The listing for the Nail.exe is still in the log along with a couple of other infected files. It also appears that McAfee has been removed or disabled. If you did not remove it then you will want to reinstall it.

Let's run a different scanner to see if the items in the HijackThis log are pointing to real files or if the files are gone and just the startup items have to be removed.

Download WinPFind.zip and unzip the contents to the C:\ folder.

Start in Safe Mode Using the F8 method:
  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the boot menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu item.
  • Press the Enter key.
Locate the c:\winpfind\winpfind.exe file and double-click it to run it. Now click the Start Scan button to begin the scan.

When the scan is complete reboot normally and post the WinPFind.txt file (located in the WinPFind folder) back here so I can review it.

Yes, I did remove McAfffee. It was the original free-trial install with my Dell computer and I'd been meaning to remove it and replace it with Norton anyway. I will install Norton after all this is over with.

Anywya, I was finally able to get spybot to run. I fixed all the entries that it found. I restarted and then I ran WinPFind. Below, I've posted the log from WinPFind. Along with the new HJT log (where nail.exe no longer appears).

PS. All the _name.oldexe files was me troubleshooting the first day.
Let mw know.
Thanks for all your help!!

Hi yudiann. let's get rid of some of these files.

Quotebox - Registry

Launch Notepad, and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into the new document. Save it to your desktop as regfix.reg :

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\UserAgent\Post Platform]
"iebar"=-
"SV1"=""
[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\msyngqft]
[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{784300ed-e5c3-408b-9f31-ae1a6d50b879}]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{784300ed-e5c3-408b-9f31-ae1a6d50b879}]
[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{<CLSID from shell Extensions}]
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\Explorer\Run]
"cmqvuffiur.exe"=-

Download Pocket Killbox and unzip it to your desktop.

Double-click on KillBox.exe to launch the program.
  • Highlight the files in bold below and press the Ctrl key and the C key at the same time to copy them to the clipboard
    • C:\WINDOWS\Bninpznx.drl
      C:\WINDOWS\Caejyskirlv.oaw
      C:\WINDOWS\Inxzrjbs.bzb
      C:\WINDOWS\Pnzcuschgy.mip

      C:\WINDOWS\system\cmqvuffiur.exe
  • In Killbox click on the File menu and then the Paste from Clipboard item
  • In the Full Path of File to Delete field drop down the arrow and make sure that all of the files are listed
  • Click the option to Delete on Reboot
  • If not greyed out click the checkbox for Unregister .dll Before Deleting
  • If not greyed out click the checkbox for Deltree (Include SubDirectories)
  • Now click on the red button with a white 'X' in the middle to delete the files
  • Click Yes when it says all files will be deleted on the next reboot
  • Click Yes when it asks if you want to reboot now
  • If you get a "PendingFileRenameOperations Registry Data has been Removed by External Process!" message then just reboot manually
Locate regfix.reg on your Desktop and double-click on it. You will receive a prompt similar to: "Do you wish to merge the information into the registry?". Answer Yes and wait for a message to appear similar to Merged Successfully.

Ok. Reboot your computer back into Safe Mode and make a new WinPFind log. Post it back here and I will review it when it comes in.

Cheers.

Hi OldTimer. I apologize for the delay and appreciate you help! I was waiting for an email instead of tracking the post online, and I must have missed it.

Anyway, my computer had gotten to a usable and non-threatening stage so I was learning to live with it as I reaserched the weird pop-ups every day. I was still getting some warnings as soon as I would open IE:

hclean32.exe warning from norton
rdsndin.exe warning from ewido
ntfsnlpa.exe warning from ewido

I ran everything that you recommended in your last post, and they seem to be gone. I've posted the lastest WinPFind and HJT logs. Let me know what you think and thank you SO much for you help!
Yudiann

Hi yudiann. Everything looks clean in both of those logs. Good job! How are things running? Any problems?

We have a couple of last steps to perform and then you're all set.

First, let's reset your hidden/system files and folders. System files are hidden for a reason and we don't want to have them openly available and susceptible to accidental deletion.
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading UNSELECT Show hidden files and folders.
  • CHECK the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
Next, let's clean your restore points and set a new one:

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)
  • Turn off System Restore.
    • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
    • Click Properties.
    • Click the System Restore tab.
    • CHECK Turn off System Restore.
    • Click Apply, and then click OK.
  • Restart your computer.
  • Turn ON System Restore.
    • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
    • Click Properties.
    • Click the System Restore tab.
    • UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
    • Click Apply, and then click OK.
System Restore will now be active again.

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend the following free programs:
  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
  • SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
  • IESpy-Ad to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email.
You already have a good anti-virus, and you should also have a good firewall for blocking unwanted access to and from your computer. These also are free for personal use:It is best to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system and to keep them updated.

To keep your operating system up to date visit Microsoft Windows Update monthly. Microsoft puts out new updates on the 2nd Tuesday of every month so be sure to check regularly.

And to keep your system clean be aware of what emails you open, what websites you visit, and update and run these free malware scanners once a week:To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read this article by Tony Klien: So how did I get infected in the first place?

Have a safe and happy computing day!

Thank you so much for your help. Really, for a while I thought I wasn't going to be able to get out of this one without re-imaging. I re-hid the files and I followed your instructions for the "restore" point. The computer seems to be running ok, except for three little pop-ups that keep coming up from Norton and Ewido. I clean them and they keep coming back, usually when I open IE.

Here is what they say:

Trojan Horse "hclean32.exe" warning from norton (unable to repair this file)
rdsndin.exe warning from ewido (Spyware.FindSpy)
ntfsnlpa.exe warning from ewido (Spyware.MsnAgent)

I would appreciate if you could help me understand why it is happening. I've tried to read up on them but I can't find anything useful.

I did have to do two other things to clean up my computer after you instructions. I had the msmsgs.exe problem and I had to replace my wininet.dll windows file with the one in the Microsoft website because it was infected. Let me know what you think.

Thanks again!!

Hi yudiann. I don't see any of those files in any of the logs. There is a newer version of WinPFind that checks additional information so let's try a scan with that and see if it shows us anything.

When the scan is complete reboot normally and post the WinPFind.txt file (located in the WinPFind folder) back here along with a new HijackThis log and I will review the information when it comes in.

What's left?
I have a file that Norton finds hclean.exe.
I have a yellow pop up in the task bar that tells me I need virus protection.
I have a "windows firewall warning" that says it detects suspicious activity.

WARNING: not all files found by this scanner are bad. Consult with a knowledgable person before proceeding.

If you see a message in the titlebar saying "Not responding..." you can ignore it. Windows somethimes displays this message due to the high volume of disk I/O. As long as the hard disk light is flashing, the program is still working properly.

Hi yudiann. Ok, let's clean up the rest of this. Plese print these direcitons and then proceed with the following steps in order.

Step #1

Download CCleaner and install it but do not run it yet.

Step #2
  • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into the new document

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\User Agent\Post Platform]
"iebar"=-
[-HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{7A1693A1-AFAF-4F1E-9B05-EEC38A85FBF3}]
[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar\DateBar]

  • Save the document to your desktop as fixreg.reg and close Notepad.
  • Locate the fixreg.reg file on your desktop and right-click on it
  • Choose Merge from the popup menu and answer Yes or Ok to any further prompts. You should get a message that the file was merged successfully.
Step #3
  • Double-click on KillBox.exe to launch the program.
  • Highlight the files in bold below and press the Ctrl key and the C key at the same time to copy them to the clipboard
    • C:\WINDOWS\pzdr.sys
      C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\mirindaspg.exe
      C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\oci05.exe
      C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\pzdr.sys
      C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\mglv0v4.dll
  • In Killbox click on the File menu and then the Paste from Clipboard item
  • In the Full Path of File to Delete field drop down the arrow and make sure that all of the files are listed
  • Click the option to Delete on Reboot
  • If not greyed out click the checkbox for Unregister .dll Before Deleting
  • Now click on the red button with a white 'X' in the middle to delete the files
  • Click Yes when it says all files will be deleted on the next reboot
  • Click Yes when it asks if you want to reboot now
  • If you get a "PendingFileRenameOperations Registry Data has been Removed by External Process!" message then just reboot manually
Step #4
  • After the system reboots, start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:
    • R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
      O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7A1693A1-AFAF-4F1E-9B05-EEC38A85FBF3} - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\mglv0v4.dll
      O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [oci05.exe] C:\WINDOWS\System32\oci05.exe /k
      O4 - HKCU\..\RunOnce: [oci05.exe] C:\WINDOWS\System32\oci05.exe /k
  • Now close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.
Step #5

Start CCleaner and click on the Run Cleaner button in the lower right-hand corner. When it is finished close CCleaner.

Step #6

Reboot normally and run at least 2 of the following on-line virus scans:Bitdefender <<<Add a check by 'Autoclean'.
RAV <<<Add a check by 'Autoclean', leave everything else as is.
eTrust <<<'Cure' whatever is found, then delete if unsuccessful
Housecall <<<Put on 'Autoclean' and delete what it can't clean.
Panda ActiveScan <<<Accept default settings
If there are any files that cannot be automatically disinfected or quarantined then you will need to delete them manually.

Step #7

If you do not already have Ad-Aware SE 1.06 then follow these download and setup instructions: Ad-Aware SE Setup. Otherwise, just check for updates.

Start Ad-aware SE, click the Start button and choose Perform Full System Scan. Click the Next button and wait for the scan to complete. If anything was found, right-click on the list and choose Select All and remove all it finds.

Step #8

Use the Add Reply button to post a new HijackThis log along with a new WinPFind log.

I will review the new information when it comes in.

Thank You. I appreciate all your help, I know this has taken a while and it doesn't seem to end. Here are the new WinPFind and HJT logs.

Nail/Shell problem is back. I think it was downloaded from an AIM upgrade. And I don't wuit eunderstand those files that regenerate themselves.
