Hello all, I'm new here and hoping you can point the way with a problem I can't seem to get the right info searching around for ages.
Anyway I have removed the "Active Security" malware (a fake spyware removal program) using Malwarebytes great program. The symptoms (pop ups, nags etc.) have gone and things seem OK.
Here's the puzzling bit. I then went on to try to install the AVG free package (to help stop this sort of thing in future), but AVG gives a warning. It says a "Potentially incompatible program ...." is on there and names "Active Security" as the culprit. So I think there are some traces of Active Security still hanging around - enough for AVG to spot.
I've tried to remove these Active Security traces: (1) removed start menu program entries (still present even though they lead nowhere), (2) searched registry and removed all further Active Security entries. (Perhaps a triffle aggressive, I could restore the registry to undo this if appropriate.)
I could just click through and chose the ignore warning option in the AVG install. But is this good enough? Any ideas what traces are left and how to get rid, or is this overkill?
