Hi!

This is my first time here, and I wish it were under happier circumstnaces.

Whilst on my internet travels, I stupidly clicked a link that was for some competition or other. All I won was a shed load of trouble in the form of viruses and exploits.

I'm very new to this as far as using Hijack this goes, and have always relied on my anti-virus/firewall/malware remover to deal with my problems, so I'm sorry for being a pain but you'll have to treat me as a novice and go step by step with me.

This is a list of what I'm currently using to defend against intrusion and malware/adware:

Norton Anti-virus
Norton Personal Firewall
Ad-Aware

Here is my current HijackThis log file:

My anti-virus tells me I'm currently having problem with the following infections:

ifect1[1].anr
EXPLOIT1[1].CHM
test3[1].htm
search[1].htm

My home page has been changed from www.google.co.uk to www.jimbutt.com/stuffs/

I keep getting a pop-up telling me that my PC will not reboot on the next start up, and that ports 3128 and 8080 are at risk. The pop-up claims to be warning me of "Error #317"

My Internet Explorer browser is getting over-ridden and keeps being directed to the following website: http://wwwterra.es/personal6/dames5/nger.html

Please help me if you can. I'd be very grateful for any help you can give.

Thanks! I've managed to update and get SP1 on my machine, despite this infernal pop-up trying to over-ride my PC.

Don't worry.. I'll be gentle. I have another scan I would like you to run before we get down to the nitty gritty.

First, please put HijackThis in its own folder. It makes backups,
and it is best to keep them all in one place.
  • Click My Computer, then C:\
  • In the menu bar, File->New->Folder.

That will create a folder named New Folder.
  • Right click on the folder and select 'rename'
  • Rename to something like 'HJT' , and put Hijackthis in there.
********************************************************

Please download ewido security suite it is a free version of the program.
  • Install ewido security suite
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck..
    • Install background guard
    • Install scan via context menu
  • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.
  • The program will now open to the main screen.
  • When you run ewido for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
  • You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
    • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
    • Then click on Start Update.
  • The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
(the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
ewido manual updates

Once the updates are installed do the following:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.**
    • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
    • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
    • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
    • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop.
Now close ewido security suite.

Then reboot and post a new hjt log, along with the Ewido report.

One thing I noticed is that the running process SVCHOST.EXE (there are two in the list when I press ctrl+alt+del, and the one I refer to is the first one) is using a hell of a lot of processor power. Hope this info helps.

Wow.. now there's a lot more stuff showing up...

svchost is a valid file, and is often found running four or more times. It is responsible for running services, and each instance can only handle so many.

Let's see..where to start here...

Put a checkmark next to the following entries in HijackThis. Make sure all
other windows and browsers are closed before clicking on “Fix Checked”

Firstly, I know I said I know next to nothing about zapping bugs in my machine, but I just wanted to raise a query before I deleted a certain item.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [BJCFD] C:\Program Files\BroadJump\Client Foundation\CFD.exe

This is part of my broadband service, provided by NTL. Well, it's in the BroadJump folder, anyway. Just thought I'd ask before I deleted it.

Here's the latest HJT logfile:

So far, things are going okay, except the processor is still being used a lot by that svchost.exe, and making my PC chug. Apart from that, all those horrid pop-ups have been given the proverbial finger, so far!

The file you asked about is only semi-legitimate. It's not hurting anything though. It is so your ISP can help troubleshoot your system.

Run Ewido again so that it can clean up the remnants, and a defrag wouldn't hurt, especially if it has been awhile since the last time you have done it.

Your log looks fine. You have a couple of optional items, but that's about all I see. You did good.

The story so far...

I've run Ewido again and it picked up another 20 items which have been removed. Here is the latest logfile for that:

That looks good.

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and reenable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

You can find instructions on how to enable and reenable system restore here:

    Managing Windows Millenium System Restore

    or

    Windows XP System Restore Guide

Renable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:

Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers

  • Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Glad I was able to help.
