I have recently find out that i have this Acovcnt.exe running on my computer without me noticing it..

After I googled it, i found out that this is a very dangerous backdoor/trojan and i can't seem to remove it with Anti-malware and spypot..

Is it still safe to use my computer now?

Can someone please answer asap? Please see below for my DDS report (My O/S is Chinese, not sure if that will have effect on determining the infection)

The Avovcnt.exe looks like the visible problem, there are more problems hiding away I'm sure.

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop making sure you rename it comfix.exe
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. (Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive.)
  • Double click on Combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Posted Image

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Posted Image

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Thanks :(

Ok, done. Please let me know if those Chinese characters are bothering you. I'm more than happy to translate them.

No problem with the Chinese characters, djpower. Thanks for asking though, if I need to get a translation I will ask.

Combofix left the acovcnt.exe file alone and I haven't found any conclusive proof that it is malware.

First we must remove the rootkit that Combofix did find

Please copy the contents of the code box below, open notepad and paste it there. On the top toolbar in notepad select file, then save as. In the box that opens type in remservice.bat for the file name. Right below that click the down arrow in the line for save as and select all files. Save this to your desktop and close notepad.

@mbr -f

Locate the remservice icon on your desktop and double click it. A box will pop up briefly on your screen and disappear, this is normal.

Now

Please make sure that you can view all hidden files. Instructions on how to do this can be found here:

How to see hidden files in Windows

Go to Jotti

When the jotti page has finished loading, click the Browse button and navigate to the following file and click Submit.

c:\windows\system32\acovcnt.exe

Please post back the results of the scan in your next post.

If Jotti is busy, try the same at VirusTotal

Finally,

Please download Posted Image Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application or, if you are using Vista, right-click and select Run As Administrator on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
  • On the Scanner tab:
    • Make sure the "Perform Full Scan" option is selected.
    • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
  • Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. Regardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware. MBAM may make changes to your registry as part of its disinfection routine. If you're using other security programs that detect registry changes, they may alert you after scanning with MBAM. Please permit the program to allow the changes.

Thanks :(

Hey Mole, sorry for the late reply.

I seem to have difficulty to run the Anti-malware scan. Every time when the program scanned half-way, it will automatically shut down by itself.

Please let me know if you happen to know what can be the problem.

Per your request, here is the result from Jotti:

This file has been scanned before. The results for this previous scan are listed below.

Filename: acovcnt.exe
Status:
Scan finished. 0 out of 21 scanners reported malware.
Scan taken on: Tue 27 Oct 2009 17:39:36 (CET) Permalink

Even though it looks like this "acovcnt.exe" is not a mal-ware..but i can almost guarantee you there must be some sort of trojan/backdoor/spyware in my comp. Recently i have report my creditcard for fraud activity and i see post from me on the forum always go to "even though i never post".

Please let me know what you think. Thank you.

What I think is that Acovcnt.exe is not a malicious file but we have just removed a new variation of the MBR rootkit called Mebroot which uses exploits, meaning that your thoughts that you have some kind of backdoor/trojan/spyware is probably right.

Without MBR on your machine these activities should stop - providing you don't get reinfected.

Then please update your Java

Old versions of Java are big doors to malware. JavaRa removes them and updates your version to the most current.

Please download JavaRa to your desktop and unzip it to its own folder
  • Run JavaRa.exe, pick the language of your choice and click Select. Then click Remove Older Versions.
  • Accept any prompts.
  • Open JavaRa.exe again and select Search For Updates.
  • Select Update Using Sun Java's Website then click Search and click on the Open Webpage button. Download and install the latest Java Runtime Environment (JRE) version for your computer.

Please make sure you turn on the Java Automatic Update Feature

Then you will not have to remember to update it when Java introduces a new version.
Java is updated very frequently, and the old versions are malware magnets.

Note: This feature is available only on Windows XP, 2003, 2000 (SP2 or higher) and set by default for these operating systems.

Finally please let me know of any symptoms that still exist that you are aware of

Thanks :(

I would like to thank you for your great help! :(

I have re-download the Java and clear out the older version and perform ATF-cleaner on my comp.

However, some thing that really bothers me - I can't perform a full anti-Malware scan on my comp. Everything when it gets to some where around 50%, the program would shut down by itself. Can that be a problem?

Also, just out of curiosity - this file "acovcnt.exe" based on many website is a malware/backdoor file. Can it be possible that it is actually NOT a harmful program? If it's indeed a safe file, what can be the reason that it comes back automatically everytime i delete it? (not to mention it runs by itself under the background)

Sorry for all the questions, but i would like to know more to better protect my computer. Thank you again in advance!

Yes, that could be a hangover from the malware. Can you run Junction so i can see whether it had permissions changed.

We need to scan the system with this special tool:
  • Please download and save:
Junction.zip

  • Unzip it and place Junction.exe in the Windows directory (C:\Windows).
  • Go to Start => Run... => Copy and paste the following command in the Run box and click OK:
cmd /c junction -s c:\ >log.txt&log.txt& del log.txt

A command window opens starting to scan the system. Wait until a log file opens. Copy and paste the log in your next reply. If we don't find anything here it may be that the Antivir may need to be reinstalled. Let's see what Junction says first.

In this case, the acovcnt.exe file is for your ASUS Chameleon mother board.

You should be aware that some websites are not as accurate as they could be. Just because a file has certain attributes doesn't automatically make it dangerous. For example, some antimalware files are recognised as being dangerous because the file contains the ability to change registry entries. But they are only changing them back to the default. It's also important to note the filepath for the dangerous file could be different and therefore not the same file at all.

As to why this file returns after it is deleted, a perfectly legitimate program will put back deleted files when rebooted. This happens with system files too.

No problem :(

Junction isn't showing anything at all. I would recommend a reinstall of the Antivir program.

Is your PC now clean? Yep...

You're clean. Good stuff! :(

Let's do some clearing up

Please make sure you turn on the Java Automatic Update Feature

Then you will not have to remember to update it when Java introduces a new version.
Java is updated very frequently, and the old versions are malware magnets.

Note: This feature is available only on Windows XP, 2003, 2000 (SP2 or higher) and set by default for these operating systems.

Uninstall ComboFix

Remove Combofix now that we're done with it.
  • Please press the Windows Key and R on your keyboard. This will bring up the Run... command.
(For Vista/Windows 7 please click Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Run)
  • Now type in Comfix /Uninstall in the runbox and click OK. (Notice the space between "Comfix" and "/")
  • Please follow the prompts to uninstall Combofix.
  • You will then receive a message saying Combofix was uninstalled successfully once it's done uninstalling itself.
This will uninstall Combofix and anything associated with it.

Download and Run OTC

We will now remove the tools we used during this fix using OTC.
  • Download OTC by OldTimer and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click Posted Image icon to start the program. If you are using Vista, please right-click and choose run as administrator
  • Then Click the big Posted Image button.
  • You will get a prompt saying "Being Cleanup Process". Please select Yes.
  • Restart your computer when prompted.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here's some advice on how you can keep your PC clean

Update your AntiVirus Software

It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out. If you use a commercial antivirus program you must make sure you keep renewing your subscription. Otherwise, once your subscription runs out, you may not be able to update the programs virus definitions.

Make sure your applications have all of their updates

It is also possible for other programs on your computer to have security vulnerability that can allow malware to infect you. Therefore, it is also a good idea to check for the latest versions of commonly installed applications that are regularly patched to fix vulnerabilities. You can check these by visiting Secunia Software Inspector and Calendar of Updates.

Install an AntiSpyware Program

A highly recommended AntiSpyware program is SuperAntiSpyware. You can download the free Home Version. or the Pro version for a 15 day trial period.

Installing this or another recommended program will provide spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should scan your computer with an AntiSpyware program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

Finally, here's a treasure trove of antivirus, antimalware and antispyware resources

That's it Djpower, happy surfing!

Cheers.
