I recently became infected with the Active Security trojan and possibly with other things. I tried with some help from someone slightly more knowledgable than myself to get rid of it, but it seems that it is still there. I got an email from someone I knew, and thought I could trust it, but when I clicked on a link, this Active Security program started to run. I tried to shut it down as soon as possible, and uninstall the program, but it kept coming back.

I ran CA antivirus and antispyware programs, and they both came up with the Alureon AGO trojan. I quarantined the files, and reran both of the programs and it came back again. In checking on the internet for removal of this trojan, I came across malwarebytes in several forums, and decided to download and try that. It found 1 infected registry key and 87 infected files. I removed those, but when I reran the scan, there were still 80 infected files.

At this point I talked to somone more knowledgable, and we checked the registry and found the key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run "Active Security" and deleted it. We tried to find and shut down active processes in the task manager that the other person found somewhere online, but none of them matched what I had running. I ran Malwarebytes again in safe mode and it came up with no infections, but ran it again in normal mode, and still had 80 files showing. Each time I removed all of the files, but each time the same files came back. I also used Windows Explorer to check the files that had the infected files in them, but the infected file names did not show up, although there were some names that were fairly close to the listed names.

At this point, I talked again to my contact, and he suggested that I try talking to you guys. Can you suggest what I can try next? The computer is running Windows XP. Anything else you need to know? Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated.

Edit: Moved topic from AntiVirus, Firewall and Privacy Products and Protection Methods to the more appropriate forum. ~ Animal

We need to change the way you are running Malwarebytes.

On the Scanner tab:
  • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
  • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
  • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note:
-- If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. Regardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Note 2:
-- MBAM may make changes to your registry as part of its disinfection routine. If you're using other security programs that detect registry changes (like Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere with the fix or alert you after scanning with MBAM. Please disable such programs until disinfection is complete or permit them to allow the changes. To disable these programs, please view this topic: How To Temporarily Disable Your Anti-virus, Firewall And Anti-malware Programs

Now the computer is doing something new. When I started it and tried to run Malwarebytes, I got an error message:

vbAccelerator SGrid II Control
Runtime Error '0'

When I pressed OK on that message I got another error message:

Malwarebytes Antimalware
Runtime Error '440'
Automation Error

Malwarebytes would not run.

Reloaded Malwarebytes and ran twice in normal mode, letting restart go into normal mode. Both runs same except for registry key infection did not show up on second run. Continued with SAS procedure. Downloaded ATF, but did not run. Downloaded and installed SAS. Went to Safe Mode. Ran ATF, tried to run SAS, but got message that it could not run in Safe Mode. Did I misunderstand, should I go back into normal mode before running? What next?

In any case here is Malwarebytes log:

Be sure you select the items for removal

* Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
* Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
* The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
* Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.

SAS should run in safe mode. Retry that after rerunning Malwarebytes.

I did follow all the instructions for Malwarebytes both times, I think I just saved the log file before I ran remove selected. Just to be sure I ran it again this morning with the same results, It says delete on reboot for all of the items, but the only thing actually removed was the infected registry key. The log for the last run is below. I also reran the ATF and SAS procedure. I think it wouldn't run because I accidentally tried to run the install instead of the actual application program. SAS reported no infections. Log is below.

While waiting for SAS scan to run I was looking at some of the other posts and found the preparation for removal post. I have not run DDS.scr or RootRepeal yet. I will be running those while waiting for a reply in case they would help in your analysis. I also noted a file on my Desktop that I don't think I put there called Thumbs.db. Not sure what that is, would you like to have a copy sent to you?

We Need to check for Rootkits with RootRepeal
  • Download RootRepeal from the following location and save it to your desktop.
  • Extract RootRepeal.exe from the archive (If you did not use the "Direct Download" mirror).
  • Open Posted Image on your desktop.
  • Click the Posted Image tab.
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • Check all seven boxes: Posted Image
  • Push Ok
  • Check the box for your main system drive (Usually C:), and press Ok.
  • Allow RootRepeal to run a scan of your system. This may take some time.
  • Once the scan completes, push the Posted Image button. Save the log to your desktop, using a distinctive name, such as RootRepeal.txt. Include this report in your next reply, please.

Just finished running it! Got an error message box that had a save option on it. Here is the text log it saved:

17:29:33: DeviceIoControl Error! Error Code = 0xc0000001
17:29:33: Could not read system registry! Please contact the author!

I also took a screenshot of it if it would help you, but it pretty much says the same thing.

After I ran this and posted this log, I realized that my girlfriends computer was also infected, probably because we were networked together. I completley separated her computer from mine, connecting mine directly to the internet cable router, instead of through our home network router. I wasn't sure if this would change anything, so I reran Malwarebytes, SAS and RootRepeal. The 1st 2 came out the same, but RootRepeal had some minor changes, so I edited this post and included both sets of RootRepeal logs.

Here is the 1st log:

I will notify the author of this issue...

Next step...

Before we start fixing anything you should print out these instructions or copy them to a NotePad file so they will be accessible. Some steps will require you to disconnect from the Internet or use Safe Mode and you will not have access to this page.

Please download DrWeb-CureIt and save it to your desktop. DO NOT perform a scan yet.

Reboot your computer in "Safe Mode" using the F8 method. To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup (but before the Windows icon appears) press the F8 key repeatedly. A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode".

Scan with Dr.Web CureIt as follows:
  • Double-click on launch.exe to open the program and click Start. (There is no need to update if you just downloaded the most current version
  • Read the Virus check by DrWeb scanner prompt and click Ok where asked to Start scan now? Allow the setup.exe to load if asked by any of your security programs.
  • The Express scan will automatically begin.
(This is a short scan of files currently running in memory, boot sectors, and targeted folders).
  • If prompted to dowload the Full version Free Trial, ignore and click the X to close the window.
  • If an infected object is found, you will be prompted to move anything that cannot be cured. Click Yes to All. (This will move any detected files to the C:\Documents and Settings\userprofile\DoctorWeb\Quarantine folder if they can't be cured)
  • After the Express Scan is finished, put a check next to Complete scan to scan all local disks and removable media.
  • In the top menu, click Settings > Change settings, and unheck "Heuristic analysis" under the "Scanning" tab, then click Apply, Ok.
  • Back at the main window, click the green arrow "Start Scanning" button on the right under the Dr.Web logo.
  • Please be patient as this scan could take a long time to complete.
  • When the scan has finished, a message will be displayed at the bottom indicating if any viruses were found.
  • Click Select All, then choose Cure > Move incurable.
  • In the top menu, click file and choose save report list.
  • Save the DrWeb.csv report to your desktop.
  • Exit Dr.Web Cureit when done.
  • Important! Reboot your computer because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
  • After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web in your next reply. (You can use Notepad to open the DrWeb.cvs report)

I ran Dr.Web Cureit. You weren't kidding about it taking a while (4.5 hrs). FYI, I wasn't prompted about moving files after the Express Scan, but I followed the instructions for what to do after the full scan, then ran full scan and it showed no further viruses. The log is below.

A few questions first. Was I correct in assuming that my girlfriend's computer was infected through the in home network? Was I correct to disconnect it before running any more scans? Will whatever fix works for this computer also work for hers (probably not since hers is a Compaq running Vista)? Can the virus do anything to the router? How do I reconnect her without reinfecting myself?

Thanks again for all of your help, here is the log:

gtdownde_110.ocx;c:\windows\system32;Probably DLOADER.Trojan;Invalid path to file ;

Yes, Viruses/trojans can affect the way your router works. We had one that liked to change dns setting in the past. That would make it route you to another site.

Please download gmer.zip and save to your desktop.
  • Extract (unzip) the file to its own folder such as C:\Gmer. (Click here for information on how to do this if not sure.)
  • Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
  • Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security program drivers will not conflict with gmer's driver.
  • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled.
  • Double-click on gmer.exe to start the program.
  • Allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • You may be prompted to scan immediately if GMER detects rootkit activity.
  • If you are prompted to scan your system click "Yes" to begin the scan.
  • If not prompted, click the "Rootkit/Malware" tab.
  • On the right-side, all items to be scanned should be checked by default except for "Show All". Leave that box unchecked.
  • Select all drives that are connected to your system to be scanned.
  • Click the Scan button to begin. (Please be patient as it can take some time to complete)
  • When the scan is finished, click Save to save the scan results to your Desktop.
  • Save the file as gmer.log and copy/paste the contents in your next reply.
  • Exit GMER and re-enable all active protection when done.

Ok Gmer started, then stopped suddenly at BSOD. It seemed to be running alright up until that point. It did start running right from the start, and found about 7 or 8 things then stopped. At that point I clicked the scan button, and it was running and listing quite a bit of stuff. Then suddenly BSOD. Should I have stopped and listed out the report after the first little bit, or was it something else I did wrong?

Unfortunately, in safe mode some of the screen on the left side does not fit on the screen as all of the printing, icons and everything appear very large (anyway to fix that?, can you change display settings in safe mode?). I will give you everything that I could read, I hope it will be enough. Any way to get to the report from Gmer?
