Why won't Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 Security Update KB953297 install? Googling indicates that the problem is widespread, and there are various suggestions, not all of which I am sure I can trust.

What can I do about it? Should I uninstall .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1, and reinstall? Or what? Any help would be appreciated.

Net Framework 1.1 is quite old.

I believe installing the following...will take care of your situation: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...;displaylang=en

I did what you said and still keep getting this update request that fails:

Initializing installation... done!
Installing Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 Security Update for Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows 7, and Windows Server 2008 R2 (KB953297) (update 1 of 1)...

Sorry...did you uninstall all previous versions of NET on your system...before installing the one I linked to?

If not, then do that.

I would then run the chkdsk /r command. Start/Run...type chkdsk /r and hit Enter. Type Y in response to onscreen query, close window. Reboot the system, the chkdsk /r command will execute before attempting to boot into XP.

I am also unable to update the following:

Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 Security Update (KB953297)
Error Code: 0x64C

and

.NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 2 Security Update (KB974417)

Error Code: 0x645

Also tried running the .exe files manually,
(KB953297) Just fails, says source not available.

(KB974417) Says this update does not address anything on my computer!

Problem started after installing MS Office Professional 2007 TRIAL on 12th October, 2009
and uninstalling through Add/Remove on same day.

I've sent details to Microsoft support (first time in 17 years) as I cannot remove 1.1 in Add/Remove.

If they offer a reasonable solution, other than referring me to KB articles (already done that)
I will post an 'update' if I have any success.

No problems as yet with my programs, it's just Windows Update nagging for an install
of these 'critical' updates, but failing to deal with them.

Had an email from Microsoft.
Supposed to be contacted in 24 hours by email.

Exactly when do you get/see the error message?

What exactly does it say?

Posting in both threads for update problem.

Louis has sound words of advice.

Uninstall / reinstall / update works.

Could not remove any version of the framework through Add/Remove
but there are applications out there that will assist.

I used Aaron Stebner's dotnetfx cleanup tool.

Thank you, Louis, back to 'Happy Computing' (until the next time).
