Hi there,

I'm running Windows XP Version 5.1 Service Pack 2

Looks like Antivirus Pro is a popular problem around here - hoping that your experts can help. Earlier today, I was visiting a site that I often frequent and my computer just shut down - I didn't click anything, install anything, or follow any links. Once my computer booted back up, it was clear that I had a nasty virus masquerading as Antivirus software that I knew I didn't have. I was able to connect to the internet and do a search on Antivirus Pro. I accessed Bleepingcomputer.com only by viewing the cached version - clicking directly from Google redirected me to bogus sites.

After following the Uninstall instructions on this site, it's clear that my PC is still infected. I've rerun Malwarebytes and have run AVG - neither program finds anything - but I am still being redirected to fake websites when use Google and click links (I can access websites fine if I enter the URL directly). My computer is also running even slower that usual (it's a pretty crummy laptop to begin with, as it's an interim replacement for another PC that has to be wiped clean due to far more nefarious viruses. UGH.). After searching through the forums, I've found no solutions to my particular problem. I've followed all the instructions in the uninstall guide and the preparation guide to a tee. Much respect for all the work that you guys do here - it's too bad that it's so desperately needed, though.

Thanks in advance,

Hi cat_not_kitty,

Welcome to BC HijackThis forum. I am farbar. I am going to assist you with your problem.

Please refrain from making any changes to your system (scanning or running other tools, updating Windows, installing applications, removing files, etc.) from now on as it might interfere with our fixes. Please let me know in your next reply if you agree with this.
  • I do not recommend that you have more than one anti virus product installed and running on your computer at a time. The reason for this is that if both products have their automatic (Real-Time) protection switched on, then those products which do not encrypt the virus strings within them can cause other anti virus products to cause "false alarms". It can also lead to a clash as both products fight for access to files which are opened again this is the resident/automatic protection. In general terms, the two programs may conflict and cause:
    1) False Alarms: When the anti virus software tells you that your PC has a virus when it actually doesn't.
    2) System Performance Problems: Your system may lock up due to both products attempting to access the same file at the same time.
Therefore please go to add/remove in the control panel and remove either Norton Internet Security or AVG9.

  • Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

    Link 1
    Link 2
    Link 3

    * IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. (Information on A/V control HERE)
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please copy and paste the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Hi Farbar,

Thanks for your help! Yes, I agree not to install any programs or updates and not to make any other changes to my computer while we attempt to fix the problem. I have also removed Norton Antivirus, per your instructions.

Well done. :(

  • You have still some leftovers from an incomplete uninstalled Norton Antivirus on your computer.

To remove the leftovers please download and run the Norton Removal Tool.

Note: Norton removal tool is one and the same for all versions named below. It doesn't matter which version you have.

Warning: The Norton Removal Tool uninstalls all Norton 2008/2007/2006/2005/2004/2003 products and Norton 360 from your computer. If you use ACT! or WinFAX, back up those databases before you proceed.

  • Open notepad (start > All Programs > Accessories > Notepad) and copy/paste the text in the code box below into it:

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/264673/antivirus-pro-2010-removed-following-uninstall-directions-still-experiencing-redirect-issues/

    Collect::[4]
    C:\svhkapw.exe
    DirLook::
    c:\windows\SQL9_KB970892_ENU
    Registry::
    [-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\clsid\{ccc7a320-b3ca-4199-b1a6-9f516dd69829}]

    Save this as CFScript.txt

    Posted Image

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply.

    **Important Note**

When CF finishes running, the ComboFix log will open along with a message box--do not be alarmed. With the above script, ComboFix will capture files to submit for analysis.
    • Ensure you are connected to the internet and click OK on the message box.
  • Open your Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.
    • First update it, to do that under the Update tab press "Check for Updates".
    • Under Scanner tab select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
    • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
    • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
    • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
    • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
    • Copy&Paste the MBAM log.
    Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

  • Please go to start => Run => Copy and paste the bold line in the run-box and click OK:

    "C:\Qoobox\Add-Remove Programs.txt"

A text file opens up, copy and paste the content to your reply.

hi cat_not_kitty,

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system.
Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 6 and save it to your desktop.
  • Look for "Java Runtime Environment (JRE)" JRE 6 Update 16.
  • Click the Download button to the right.
  • Select your Platform: "Windows".
  • Select your Language: "Multi-language".
  • Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • Click Continue and the page will refresh.
  • Under Required Files, check the box for Windows Offline Installation, click the link below it and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and uninstall:

    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6

  • Reboot your computer.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u16-windows-i586.exe to install the newest version.
Please tell me how is your computer running now.

Java has been updated. My computer is running much better - no redirects to suspicious websites and things seem to be loading up faster. Is my computer safe for secure processes like banking at this point?

As an aside, I would love to speed up my start-up, which at this point is interminable. I read the start-up guide on Bleeping and it suggests that I use Autoruns in conjunction with the startup list to identify and disable unnecessary processes. Do I have the go ahead to make changes to my system now that things seem to be cleaned up? Or do we still have a ways to go :(?

The logs are looking good. The computer seems safe now. As a final step I would like you run an online scanner. If it found malware in System Volume Information or the ComboFix Quarantine folder, where the removed malware is quarantined, there is no need to worry. We will empty those folders when we uninstall Combofix the next round and you will be good to go. I'll give you some recommendations the next post.

I'd like us to scan your machine with ESET OnlineScan
  • Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
    ESET OnlineScan
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    • Click on Posted Image to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Check Posted Image
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Check Posted Image
  • Push the Start button.
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, push Posted Image
  • Push Posted Image, and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • Push Posted Image
Note: If it find nothing, there will be no log to save.

A log file will be saved here: C:\Program Files\ESET\ESET Online Scanner\log.txt

Hi Farbar,

I'm concerned I may have misunderstood your latest instructions slightly. When I came to the "Check Scan Archives" step, I did so, but "Delete infected files" was already checked by the online scan program. Since your instructions didn't specify that I should uncheck this check box, I didn't - hope I understood your instructions as you intended.

Here is the log:

C:\Qoobox\Quarantine\[4]-Submit_2009-10-20_09.24.49.zip Win32/TrojanDownloader.Small.NJI trojan deleted - quarantined
C:\Qoobox\Quarantine\C\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\iaStor.sys.vir Win32/Olmarik.OF virus deleted - quarantined
C:\Qoobox\Quarantine\C\WINDOWS\system32\wbem\proquota.exe.vir a variant of Win32/Kryptik.AVJ trojan cleaned by deleting - quarantined

Hi cat_not_kitty,

You did everything right and the online scanner found nothing but the ones I had already mentioned. We would have removed those anyway and it doesn't matter if ESET found and removed them.

Everything looks good now.

:)
Go to Start => Run => copy and paste next command in the field then hit enter:

ComboFix /Uninstall

This will uninstall Combofix, delete its related folders and files, reset your clock settings, hide file extensions, hide the system/hidden files and resets System Restore again.

It makes a clean Restore Point and clears all the old restore points in order to prevent possible reinfection from an old one through system restore.

You may delete any other tool or log we used from your computer.

*********
:(
About the slowness please consult this: Slow Computer/browser? Check Here First; It May Not Be Malware

A few tips from the given link I would certainly recommend:

1. Install and run CCleaner. Keep it and use it regularly.

2. Do a disk check to correct volume errors. To do that:

To check the volume for errors:
  • Click start and then My Computer.
  • Right click the drive C and select Properties.
  • Under Tools tab press Check Now...
  • Put a check mark in both items and press start.
  • If you get a message click Yes to schedule the disk check and click OK and then restart your computer to start the disk check. Please be patient and let the system run. In some cases it might take a couple of hours and you don't have to sit there the whole time.
3. Defragment your computer regularly.

4. You can use StartUpLite to disable or remove unnecessary startup entries from your computer. It will list those items and give some indication about them.

Other programs handling startup entries (but with them you should find out yourself which entry should be disabled):

a. Startup Inspector for Windows for both novice and expert user: http://www.windowsstartup.com/startupinspector.php : It helps manage Windows® startup applications.

b. Startup Control Panel with easier interface than Autoruns: http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml

c. Autoruns for more advanced users:http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinte...s/bb963902.aspx

Please consult this article on How To Prevent Malware.

Happy Surfing. :)

:(

Done and done. My computer is running better than ever.

Thank you so much, Farbar. Your expertise and altruism are absolutely inspirational - I mean that with utmost sincerity. I truly appreciate all the help you have given me.

I most certainly intend to give you guys a donation and suggest that everyone who benefits from the experts here at bleepingcomputer do so as well.

Cheers,

cat_not_kitty

p.s. I might bring my other - far more infected - computer to bc.com's experts as well...though I fear that the situation there is pretty much unfixable without a rebuild. It's bad.

You are most welcome and thanks for your kind words cat_not_kitty. :(

Topic reopened upon request.

I am experiencing a left over issue with my PC? Windows is hanging at the "Windows is shutting down" and never restarting. I have to use the power down button

Could you tell me when it is started to play, have you installed new software, major changes. etc?

Thanks for the prompt reopen!

The only changes I have made to my system are to install Startup Lite, Autoruns, and Spyware Blaster. All in an effort to speed up my computer and protect it further, now that you have helped me clean it up so well.

I initially installed Startup Lite but it identified so few startup processes and I knew the issues I was having with slow startup were related to the bloody Thinkvantage bloatware that came with my mother's computer (it's actually her's so I don't want to just remove the package).

I followed up by installing Autoruns and carefully picking through all Lenovo processes, turning off those that I deemed unecessary. I did not change any startup processes that were not related to Lenovo and IBM.

After that, it was running like a dream.

I believe the problem started after I installed Spyware Blaster. Things started running very slowly, so I disabled the IE protection (which sped it up a bit) but my computer keeps getting booted off the network and then I'm unable to reenable the connection. The only way to get back on the network is to do a full restart but then the computer just sits around on the "Windows is shutting down" page and I have to do a hard reset to boot up again.

Generally I recommend you to make a system restore when making changes to the system in order to use it to recover the system if anything goes wrong. Normally Windows makes a system restore by itself.

Spyware Blaster should not have such an effect on the performance. It adds bad sites to IE restricted sites in order to prevent connecting to those sites in case of clicking on a bad link or redirecting to a bad link.

But you may uninstall it now to the effect.

Then do the following:
  • Close Internet Explorer. Go to start > Control Panel > internet options.
    • Under General tab press Delete... then Delete All a window opens check Also delete files and settings stored by Add-ons click Yes.
    • Under Advanced tab click Restore advanced settings
  • Then download User Profile Hive Cleanup Service and run it. Reboot the computer and see if you still have a problem.
