Follow this procedure.

1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Notepad.
2. On the File menu, click Open.
3. In the File name box, type c:\windows\system.ini, and then click Open.
4. Click Search, and then click Find.
5. In the Find what box, type shell=, and then click Find Next.
6. Type a semi-colon (;) at the beginning of the Shell= line, and then create a new line.
7. On the new line, type shell=explorer.exe, click Save on the File menu.
8. Restart your computer. Click No if you receive the following prompt:
Your system shell has changed. The Compaq software will work with your new shell, but the new shell will not work with your Compaq software. Do you want to keep your Compaq software working?

Here the thing I can't even get to the start. Windows will not run at all. I've been picking at my brain all day long and so far no luck. I don't care to keep the compaq programs. I just need to get this computer up and running so my son could get off mine....Thanks

If your windows won't launch, you will have to work in DOS.

When you turn on your PC, can you get to the DOS command prompy (C:\>)?

(I get there by starting my PC and immediately after hearing the first "beeps" I hit the F8 key repeatedly till a screen appears which gives me several choices (Safe Mode, Start in DOS, etc.))

Once you are at the DOS prompt, navigate to C:\Windows (I type CD\WINDOWS)

Then type EDIT SYSTEM.INI
Once the editor launches, carry out the instructions posted by River_Rat.

An aside: I believe that everyone should have a DOS-based file manager on their PC so that they can "manage" their hard-disk files without WINDOWS. I use one called "DOS Navigator". When my Windows has crashed, it has helped me rename, delete, copy, edit and do just about anything Explorer can do.

I keep it in a folder called "Rescue" but I have a batch file in C:\ which launches it.

Let us know how you did! :flowers:

To add to Jadag's post.

Once you enter the System.ini then you can hit F1 for help and it will give you all the commands to move the courser with the arrow keys, the mouse will not work.

If you can enter Safe Mode then you can do it and still use the mouse.

I'm still not geeting anywhere. I entered into system.ini with DOS mode and changed the shell but it did not do anything the era code was still showing that windows could not run try reinstalling windows. I did intall windows but no luck. Then I deleted the c:\compaq\cpqshell.exe to just see what would happen. Then hit reboot, I thought that woud at least help me run windows but the only thing that occured was the era message was gone but windows still will not run.....Of course I went back to system.ini and reloaded the file but still nothing....

Anymore guidenance would be greatly appreciated...

Thanks for all your support,
Joe

Do you have the valid 25 digit key code and your Windows 98 CD?

I will supply the steps to reinstall your OS and not loose any data.

or

Are you using the Compaq restore CD's?

Enter the BIOS and set the CD-Rom to boot before the HDD, in the Boot Order.
To enter the BIOS on Compaq:
Start tapping the F10 key after pushing the start button.
If F10 doesn't work use the Delete Key.

From a powered Off state, turn On your computer and start tapping the F8 key. At the menu, select Safe Mode Command Prompt. At the prompt type the following:

CD\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS

Press Enter. The C:\Windows\Cabs prompt will appear. Type the following:

SETUP

Press Enter. Follow the instructions and prompts displayed for installation. This will restore the operating system without erasing any existing data.

This is for Windows 98

Since this is ME, I would try starting the computer from the WINME startup disk. Then select minimal boot and type in scanreg /restore. See this tip: http://techtalk.yourtechonline.com/forum_corrupt_reg_9x.php

OK
Lets see if we can get this machine up & running.
Lets clear up a few things for I am totally confused.

1 - You have mentioned 3 different operating systems (98, ME, XP), so we need to pick 1 and stick with it. (Which one is installed on the computer?)
Are you using OEM (factory restore disks) or Retail (store bought) software?
OEM disk will only work on the computer they came with.

2 - What is the Make & Model of computer?
Is it a Laptop or Desktop?

3 - Have you entered the BIOS and set the Boot Order as follows?
Floppy, CD-Rom, HDD

4 - How does it connect to the internet? (broadband, dial-up)

5 - Disconnect all external hardware except Monitor, Keyboard, & Mouse.
If you have any internal add-on cards such as PCI USB &/or 1394, remove them also.

6 - Supply all additional info that might help.
