My laptop is having many problems. It takes many attempts to get it to log in. I keep getting a system shutdown message. After numerous attempts, I beat it and get logged in. Then I have about 40 virus, malicious software warnings to get through. I was unable to run the dds, but was able to run the posted logs. Any help would be appreciated. I have to get back online to do my college work.

Hello tkccm :( Welcome to the BC HijackThis Log and Analysis forum. I will be assisting you in cleaning up your system.


I ask that you refrain from running tools other than those we suggest while we are cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so we know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.



In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. By doing this and then choosing Immediate E-Mail notification and then clicking on Proceed you will be advised when we respond the your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

After 5 days if a topic is not replied to we assume it has been abandoned and it is closed.



:
  • Click on the Start button, then click on Run...
  • In the empty "Open:" box provided, type cmd and press Enter
    • This will launch a Command Prompt window (looks like DOS).
  • Copy the entire blue text below to the clipboard by highlighting all of it and pressing Ctrl+C (or after highlighting, right-click and select Copy).
    copy C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386\eventlog.dll C:\ /y
  • In the Command Prompt window, paste the copied text by right-clicking and selecting Paste.
  • Press Enter.When successfully, you should get this message within the Command Prompt: "1 file(s) copied"
    NOTE: If you didn't get this message, stop and tell me first. Executing The Avenger script (step #2) won't work if the file copy was not successful.
  • Exit the Command Prompt window.




3) Please disable your AV-program, instructions can be found here
  • Download The Avenger by Swandog46 from here.
  • Unzip/extract it to a folder on your desktop.
  • Double click on avenger.exe to run The Avenger.
  • Click OK.
  • Make sure that the box next to Scan for rootkits has a tick in it and that the box next to Automatically disable any rootkits found does not have a tick in it.
  • Copy all of the text in the below code box to the clipboard by highlighting it and then pressing Ctrl+C.
    Files to move:
    C:\eventlog.dll | C:\WINDOWS\system32\eventlog.dll
  • In the avenger window, click the Paste Script from Clipboard, Posted Image button.
  • Click the Execute button.
  • You will be asked Are you sure you want to execute the current script?.
  • Click Yes.
  • You will now be asked First step completed --- The Avenger has been successfully set up to run on next boot. Reboot now?.
  • Click Yes.
  • Your PC will now be rebooted.
  • Note: If the above script contains Drivers to delete: or Drivers to disable:, then The Avenger will require two reboots to complete its operation.
  • After your PC has completed the necessary reboots, a log should automatically open. If it does not automatically open, then the log can be found at %systemdrive%\avenger.txt (typically C:\avenger.txt).




We need to scan for Rootkits with GMER
  • Please download GMER from one of the following locations, and save it to your desktop:
    • Main Mirror
      This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)
    • Zip Mirror
      This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.
  • Close any and all open programs, as this process may crash your computer.
  • Double click Posted Image or Posted Image on your desktop.
  • Allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • You may see this window. If you do, click No.

  • Click on Posted Image and wait for the scan to finish.
  • If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
  • Push Posted Image and save the logfile to your desktop.
  • Copy and Paste the contents of that file in your next post.









Please do not post any logs as an attachment unless asked to do so.

At this point I cannot do any of the items you are requesting. I cannot get the start button to appear or access the internet. I get a WINDOWS cannnot find '(null)' message. I can however get into my control panel. :(

Will Ctrl-Alt-Del work to pull up the Task Manager and do you have use of a Flash Drive and another computer?

OK then you can download Avenger from another computer onto the Flash Drive and transfer it over to the infected one but before you do let me think about it a little because we can go ahead and download some other programs we might need at the same time. I'll get back in just a bit with you.

Since you are going to download Avenger let's go ahead and download the following programs as well. That way if we can't establish an Internet connection they will already be on the Flash Drive. When you have them let me know.

Load the Avenger off of your Flash Drive onto the infected computer' Desktop


Pull up your Task Manager and then File>>New Task (Run...). When the window opens proceed from #3 in Post #2 where you copy the files.

If the file copies OK then proceed with the Avenger instructions. If something is unclear or you have problem feel free to ask me.

Here is the information off the Notepad fromt he Avenger. Still no access to internet or start menu. What's next?

The move failed, did you get a confirmation when you copied the file that it was successful?

It said first step successful and then asked me to reboot to finish. Then the notepad came up after reboot. and gave me what I sent you.

I believe there was a bit of a mixup but we'll do it a little differently.


We're going to run Again just like last time but this time the script is different.



Avenger should already be on your Desktop so go from here:

  • Double click on avenger.exe to run The Avenger.
  • Click OK.
  • Make sure that the box next to Scan for rootkits has a tick in it and that the box next to Automatically disable any rootkits found does not have a tick in it.
  • Copy all of the text in the below code box to the clipboard by highlighting it and then pressing Ctrl+C.
    Files to move:
    C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386\eventlog.dll  | C:\WINDOWS\system32\eventlog.dll
  • In the avenger window, click the Paste Script from Clipboard, Posted Image button.
  • Click the Execute button.
  • You will be asked Are you sure you want to execute the current script?.
  • Click Yes.
  • You will now be asked First step completed --- The Avenger has been successfully set up to run on next boot. Reboot now?.
  • Click Yes.
  • Your PC will now be rebooted.
  • Note: If the above script contains Drivers to delete: or Drivers to disable:, then The Avenger will require two reboots to complete its operation.
  • After your PC has completed the necessary reboots, a log should automatically open. If it does not automatically open, then the log can be found at %systemdrive%\avenger.txt (typically C:\avenger.txt).



Try this and post the log.

I will need for you to put another file on your Flash Drive and then we will install both it and ComboFix on your Desktop. It is important to remember you go to insert your Flash Drive back into the clean computer that you hold down the shift key as you do so. This is to disable autoruns and keep the clean computer from possibly becoming infected.


Go to Microsoft's website => http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994

Scroll down to Step 1, and select the download that's appropriate for your Operating System. Download the file & save it as it's originally named.

Note: If you have SP3, use the SP2 package.

Transfer both ComboFix and the files you just downloaded to the desktop of the infected computer.

Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. Additional instructions can be found HERE.

  • Drag the setup package onto ComboFix.exe and drop it.

  • Follow the prompts to start ComboFix and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Recovery Console.

  • At the next prompt, click 'Yes' to run the full ComboFix scan.

  • When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.
