Hello, first time poster here.

I am hoping someone can assist me here. A few of nights ago, I stumbled onto a site that tried to install virus/malware protection (don't remember the name). I did not accept (for obvious reasons), tried to escape by canceling (which it wouldn't let me do) and eventually got out by stopping Firefox altogether by halting the Firefox using Control-alt-delete. Immediately afterward, I quick scanned using MABM, removed three infected files (don't remember the files, but I still have the logs).

Now for some reason, my Google search links redirect to sites me other than the intended site. This occurs about 9/10 times and does not occur if the site is manually entered in the navigation bar. I currently use Firefox version 3.5.3 and lately have enabled NoScript add-on to halt the redirection. I usually use tabbed browsing and what I noticed is that the redirected links always have one of two icons in the tab, either a purple curly-q or a green global symbol (don't know if this helps or narrows it down), followed by the name of the site (usually a shopping site or something totally unrelated).

Based on Google searching, I see that this seems to be a common problem. I would prefer not to use CombiFix without additional guidance. MABM on either quick or full scan currently detects nothing malicious. Same for Spybot Search and Destroy.

The DDS scan results are on the bottom of this message following my signature. If needed, I can make arrangements for a Kaspersky scan as well. I have to get ready for work now, so I probably won't have access to my computer again until this evening (around 7 p.m. EST).

Thank you again for your assistance.

Blade81,

Thanks for responding.

Since my last post, I've had an incident which forced me to re-install Windows. It blue screened one evening and would not get past a stop screen to continue. Let me know if require anything else.

Thank you in advance for reading my post.

Hi,

By looking at your log it seems you didn't reinstall Windows from scratch. Are the same issues still present related to redirecting?

Yes, I noticed that it really wasn't a complete redo (I had done it before in the past while trying to figure another problem which I had resolved). I ended up having to use the re-installation disk just to bypass the blue screen/stop code. I couldn't even get it to start in Safe Mode. I did notice a lot of temp files, so I'm assuming Windows tried to "salvage" itself?

As for re-direction, I haven't noticed any since the "re-installation" (maybe once, but that may have been me stumbling upon an untrustworthy site, but same tab icon, which was freaky). MABM so far hasn't detected anything.

Thank you again in advance for helping me with this.

Hi again,

Disable AVG before the operations below.

Download ERUNT
Save it to your desktop. Run and install this program.

In the box that opens ONLY choose
System registry.

Then click OK.

Click save and then go to File > Exit.
This is so the registry can be restored to this point if we need it. It may take a minute. Just let it go until it's done.

Save text below as fix.reg on Notepad (save it as all files (*.*)) on the Desktop.

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\windows]
AppInit_DLLs="avgrsstx.dll"

It should look like this -> Posted Image

Doubleclick fix.reg, press Yes and ok.

Double-click ATF Cleaner.exe to open it

Under Main choose:
Windows Temp
Current User Temp
All Users Temp
Cookies
Temporary Internet Files
Prefetch
Java Cache

*The other boxes are optional*
Then click the Empty Selected button.

Alrighty then...

Did everything without a hitch. Did have a problem with disabling AVG and I ended up un-installing it, used an avgremover, and installed Avira when all was said and done (version 9.0 of AVG was having problems in the setup phase when I tried to re-install it).

Hi,

Change from AVG to Antivir is not necessarily bad move :(

Save text below as fix.reg on Notepad (save it as all files (*.*)) on the Desktop.

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\windows]
AppInit_DLLs=""

It should look like this -> Posted Image

Doubleclick fix.reg, press Yes and ok.

Post a fresh dds.txt log.

Ok. Restoring the value has to be done manually.

Click start->run->write regedit and press enter.

Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\windows key. Under it you should find AppInit_DLLs value. Double click it and clean the value data field. When done, close registry editor and create a fresh dds log.

Well congrats, it appears your system is all clean Are you still noticing any problems? If not, it's time to secure your system to prevent against further intrusions.

THESE STEPS ARE VERY IMPORTANT

Let's reset system restore
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected. Please note you need Administrator Access to do clean the restore points.

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
NOTE: only do this ONCE,NOT on a regular basis

Please download OTC and save it to desktop.
  • Double-click OTC.exe.
  • Click the CleanUp! button.
  • Select Yes when the
    Begin cleanup Process?
    prompt appears.
  • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
  • The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.
Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTC attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.

UPDATING WINDOWS AND INTERNET EXPLORER

IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and Internet Explorer to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the Internet. Please go to the windows update site to get the critical updates.

If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure

This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

The following are recommended third party programs that are designed to keep your computer clean. A link as well as a brief description is included with each item.
  • hosts file:
    • Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them.
    • In a very basic sense, they are used to locate webpages.
    • We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain webpages.
    • However, it can slow down certain computers.
    • This is why using a hosts file is optional!!
Download it here. Make sure you read the instructions on how to install the hosts file. There is a good tutorial here
If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:
    • Click the start button (at the lower left hand corner of your screen)
    • Click run
    • In the dialog box, type services.msc
    • hit enter, then locate dns client
    • Highlight it, then double-click it.
    • On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual.
    • Click ok
  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For more info, check this webpage out.
If you don't have a 3rd party firewall or a router behind NAT then I recommend getting one. I recommend either Online Armor Free or Comodo Firewall Pro (If you choose Comodo: Uncheck during installation Install Comodo HopSurf.., Make Comodo my default search provider and Make Comodo Search my homepage and install firewall ONLY!). Both providers have support forums that help with configuration related questions.

Just a final reminder for you. I am trying to stress these two points.
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE!!! Make sure you do this about every 1-2 weeks.
Make sure all of your security programs are up to date.
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Once again, please post and tell me how things are going with your system... problems etc.

Have a great day,
Blade :(

Thanks again for your help and advice. I did the last few critical steps and have Online Armor firewall installed. Currently, I'm going through all the Windows updates. I'll keep in touch with the progress as it's going along.

Ok, so far it's been smooth sailing. Still getting used to using Online Armor, but I think I'm figuring it out ok. No new problems have arisen, and I've been updating a lot more religiously lately, especially with Windows Update (something I haven't been doing in the past.)
