After two years of heavy use I had to RMA my 8600 GTS and the good folks at XFX are replacing it with a 9600GSO 768mb card.
Is that a much better card?
I have been trying to find reliable info on the cards and I have read that the 9600gso is basically a renamed 8800.
Can anybody enlighten me ?

I know the 9600GSO has way more RAM (768 vs 256) but the memory speeds are much faster in the 8600.
Also the 8600 uses gddr3 and the 9600gso uses gddr2- is that a big deal?

it is all too confusing to me and I would appreciate if somebody could (in simple terms) tell me about the differences in the two cards and if the 9600GSO is a better product.
I assume it is but the numbers confuse me
