I have many CDs with the pictures .jpg made during holidays. When I insert these CDs in the reader Vista wants to "import" the entire CD in a file of my PC.s

Not possible to "explore" the CD without importing??

Are you talking about Autoplay feature? Windows Vista detects the contents of the inserted disk and suggests an action it thinks would be useful. You can always cancel the Autoplay dialog and browse the CD from the Start Menu > Computer
