An W2K Pro laptop that has an up to date NAV running. Double-checked with Trends Sysclean and okay.

The default home page is being switched with "about:blank" in the addressbar and something is causing a crash on a critical business web page (perhaps a page with an ActiveX control).

Spybot, Ad-aware, and CSshreder all found items to remove. Double-checked on Hijack This afterwards and could not find any entries that were not legite. Used Hijack This to reset the default pages.

System worked fine for a couple of hours, then problem resurfaced. The new Hijack This log reveals a new O18 entry that I cannot find in any Google searches:

O18 - Filter: text/html - {5769DEE5-E0FA-4CB2-9849-D54149EEF3FD} - C:\WINNT\system32\dbcb.dll
O18 - Filter: text/plain - {5769DEE5-E0FA-4CB2-9849-D54149EEF3FD} - C:\WINNT\system32\dbcb.dll

Have I found something new and if so, how do I "report it"?

Please do the following:

Download the program FindNFix from the following location:

http://www10.brinkster.com/expl0iter/freeatlast/FNF/

Once it is downloaded, double-click on the file to run it. Follow the prompts to install the program. Once it is installed a window will open up showing the installation directory and a bunch of files in the right section of the window.

On the right portion of the window look for the file called !LOG!.bat and double-click on it. It will scan through your computer for a while, so be patient. When it is completed it will automatically open a notepad window called Log.txt.

Copy the contents of that file into a reply to this post.

Grinler,

Thanks for offering to help, but after making the post, I did some research on the "about:blank" aspect of the malware and came across this explaination and instructions:

http://www.akadia.com/services/about_blank_virus.html

Since the system looks like it's cleaned up, I'll have to try your advice next time.
:-)

You may want to post your log any way to make sure. There was stuff in there that this procedure will not fix.
