I have an Inspiron 1720 Dell Notebook since less than two years ago. Came with Windows Vista, Trend Micro and other programs.

I downloaded Microsoft Office 2003 since then from limewire and until recently Im getting a pop up warning about a Troj_ Generic.DMS.

Can I get rid of it somehow (it's telling me I have only 8 days to be marked as not genuine, and keeps diminishing the days left). Or do I have to buy the original!. I'm retired, this PC is a gift from my daughters and I couldn't afford the price.

Can you help me?. If the time runs out would I loose my data, mainly on Excel, where I keep track of my bank data?.

Thanks for any advice you can give me.

Hello it appears you downloaded an infected file from there ( a common occurance).
I am moving this to the Am I Infected forum from Vista for some scans.

Please download Rooter.exe and save to your desktop.
alternate download link
  • Double-click on Rooter.exe to start the tool. If using Vista, right-click and Run as Administrator...
  • Click the Scan button to begin.
  • Once the scan is complete, Notepad will open with a report named Rooter_#.txt (where # is the number assigned to the report).
  • A folder will be created at the %systemdrive% (usually, C:\Rooter$) where the log will be saved.
  • Rooter will automatically close. If it doesn't, just press the Close button.
  • Copy and paste the contents of Rooter_#.txt in your next reply.
Important: Before performing a scan it is recommended to do the following to ensure more accurate results and avoid common issues that may cause false detections.
  • Disconnect from the Internet or physically unplug you Internet cable connection.
  • Clean out your temporary files.
  • Close all open programs, scheduling/updating tasks and background processes that might activate during the scan including the screensaver.
  • Temporarily disable your anti-virus and real-time anti-spyware protection.
  • After starting the scan, do not use the computer until the scan has completed.
  • When finished, re-enable your anti-virus/anti-malware (or reboot) and then you can reconnect to the Internet.

Next run MBAM (MalwareBytes):

NOTE: Before saving MBAM please rename it to zztoy.exe....now save it to your desktop.

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.

alternate download link

MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you. Temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the definition updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
On the Scanner tab:
  • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
  • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
  • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply. Be sure to post the complete log to include the top portion which shows MBAM's database version and your operating system.
  • Exit MBAM when done.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be asked to reboot your computer so MBAM can proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Thank you for your answer boopme, I don't think I caught the infection from the limewire download, that was almost two years ago!. Apparently the problem is that on the routinely Microsoft Updates, they realized that the serial number of the Microsoft Office 2003 that I'm using was registered to a big corporation and that I should send a prove that I belong to that corporation or they will mark it as not genuine. Or if I bought without realizing it was counterfeited I should also demonstrate that.

My main concern is, if they can delete it remotely or make it unuseful for me to continue using it. They said that in 7 more days, if I dont give prove of genuine adquisition, the software might be subject to vulnerabilities, which I dont know what will that mean.

Should I continue with your recommended procedure (which for my level of expertise will be difficult, but I'll try it out anyway) or with this info I'm giving now you could suggest another approach?

Thank you very much, from Guadalajara Mexico.

Hello. I believe they will no longer allow you updates and security updates.
Have you ever looked at Open Office. I use this instead of MSFT. for years. It id=s free.
Open Office

I would like to be sure you are not infected also.So running those tools and posting the logs, would be helpful.

Here is the "good" rooter text, without temporary files (I hope I didn't loose important info), antivirus, Firewall and Defender off and without connection to Internet.

Should I restore the bunch of temp files I sent to the Recycle bin?. I already got rid of some hundreds!

Did you notice anything different between the first and second rooters?. The first was with temps, firewall, antivirus, defender, internet connection and all the things I should have disabled in the first place.

Boopme, how can I eliminate an annoying pop up that tells me that Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware is a "blocked startup program"?. The utility that shows it, tells how to remove this type of programs from the startup, but the "remove" label is not accessible.

Thanks and sorry to bother you again.

You still have something on here. No legit tool will request MBAM removal.

Let's run Drweb-cureit . This is going to take an hour or so.
Before we start fixing anything you should print out these instructions or copy them to a NotePad file so they will be accessible. Some steps will require you to disconnect from the Internet or use Safe Mode and you will not have access to this page.

Please download Dr.Web CureIt and save it to your desktop. DO NOT perform a scan yet.
alternate download link
Note: The file will be randomly named (i.e. 5mkuvc4z.exe).

Reboot your computer in "Safe Mode" using the F8 method. To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup (but before the Windows icon appears) press the F8 key repeatedly. A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode".

Scan with Dr.Web CureIt as follows:
  • Double-click on the randomly named file to open the program and click Start. (There is no need to update if you just downloaded the most current version
  • Read the Virus check by DrWeb scanner prompt and click Ok where asked to Start scan now? Allow the setup.exe to load if asked by any of your security programs.
  • The Express scan will automatically begin.
(This is a short scan of files currently running in memory, boot sectors, and targeted folders).
  • If prompted to dowload the Full version Free Trial, ignore and click the X to close the window.
  • If an infected object is found, you will be prompted to move anything that cannot be cured. Click Yes to All. (This will move any detected files to the C:\Documents and Settings\userprofile\DoctorWeb\Quarantine folder if they can't be cured)
[list][*]After the Express Scan is finished, put a check next to Complete scan to scan all local disks and removable media.
[*]In the top menu, click Settings > Change settings, and uncheck "Heuristic analysis" under the "Scanning" tab, then click Apply, Ok.
[*]Back at the main window, click the green arrow "Start Scanning" button on the right under the Dr.Web logo.
[*]Please be patient as this scan could take a long time to complete.
[*]When the scan has finished, a message will be displayed at the bottom indicating if any viruses were found.
[*]Click Select All, then choose Cure > Move incurable.
[*]In the top menu, click file and choose save report list.
[*]Save the DrWeb.csv report to your desktop.
[*]Exit Dr.Web Cureit when done.
[*]Important! Reboot your computer because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
[*]After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web in your next reply. (You can use Notepad to open the DrWeb.cvs report)[/list

Well Boopme, it really took a long time to run DrWeb,... 8 hours!

Y ran the Express Scan (little over an hour) and the result was no virus found.

I then ran the Complete Scan ( had to go to take a couple of hours sleep since it was 2:30 AM and it was at 60% approx) and at 4:30 AM I came back and found the Scan completed, left down corner of screen said No virus found, try clicking File to send the Report to you, but the "save report list" was on gray letters, clicked on it and nothing came out.

Closed DrWeb screen and behind was another white screen (I think normal after running the Scan) that said something like: virus found, go to C:/users/...../quarantine, and another line C:/users/...DrWeb Cureit. I can't remember exactly the exact lines, (i was very tired and sleepy) but have looked for them and do not exist.

Closed Dr Web and restart the PC.

Reboot (I don't understand the difference with Restart since in the prior to last line in yor note you said: IMPORTANT! Reboot.....because it could be possible files in use will be moved/deleted DURING REBOOT (?).

Well after reboot the icon in the task bar is still appearing with a pop up saying:

"Windows has blocked some startup programs.
Windows blocks programs that require permission to run when Windows start.

When i click on this icon the box shown says, as choices:

Show or remove blocked startup programs
Run blocked program (clicking on this shows MBAM)
View help
Exit

When I try to remove MBAM from the list displayed by te first line of this box, MBAM shows the remove option in gray, so unaccesible.

I can exit the icon and survive thru the session, or I can click on the blocked program (MBAM) and after being asked for permission to Continue, click, MBAM doesn't show up but the icon is gone....until I restart another session.

Sorry for the lenghty explanation, but since I'm not that fluid in English I probably use more words than neccesary, but wanted you to understand better the problem I'm having.

Thanks again.

PS: I probably need to tell you that I forgot to change the mbam.ex to zztoy.exe when I ran it a few days ago, don't know if is part of this problem.
