I shut my laptop down one night, and when I turned it back on, it turned on fine, albeit a bit slower than usual. When I logged into my account, nothing seemed to load, and after a few minutes I got an error message saying that explorer.exe had crashed, and to restart it. I did so, but after loading for a second, it crashed again (and again, and again...). I decided to just end explorer.exe using the task manager, and with that off I can use most of my programs fine. However, all of my programs experience periods of unresponsiveness at least once every minute, rendering most of them useless.

I'm not quite sure why this is happening. I deleted a lot of random junk and freed up a few gb, but the problem's still there. It was working perfectly fine before this morning. I'm not quite sure what else to talk about... I suspect I might have contracted a virus, and avast! isn't catching it.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE
