Hey all,

Well I f'd up. I downloaded a crack for AVi synth and managed to get a serious trojan. I thought I had it licked but my browsers all got hijacked and my system has been accessed by several different computers. I finally got thing isolated in safe mode but I may have done more damage along the way. Initial reports from Mcafee said it was generic.dx!f__ Prevx came up with 26 infections and a couple of other names but I forgot them.

So here I am hat in hand, looking for help before I wipe the drive and start over. I have the system backed up at home, but I'm in Alaska for work (on deadliest catch boats) and need a computer to stay sane. THe back up stays at home incase the computer sinks to the bottom of the Berring Sea. Your help is appreciated.

Mcafee has been hit and the logs altered so I lost all the specifics.

============= FINISH: 23:13:51.64 ===============

Some of the details are my browsers have all been the victim of redirects when doing searches (http://doubleought.com/result.php?Keywords=avs+video+converter+serial&r=61d79bf410d2ec8e55b32ac900d8720bb97239a2559877ae2393b087f0f6ec617ba92675441705feb0b912499c2123fa&Submit=Go) (most of then start with that), and I am generally redirected to ad sites and bad versions of virus scanners. At first Safari was unaffected and I used that to download Prevx 3.0. That worked but the browsers were still being redirected and I ended up doing a system restore back to just after the trojan and reinfected. Prevx still comes up clean but things are way wrong. All my earlier system restore points were erased the first time I tried to fix things from safe mode, the system popped up a message (I forgot it) and rebooted before I could stop it and the good restore points were gone.

My system has revoked my administrator privileges and I think added a user called trusted installer. Most of the time task manager is disabled and I cannot open system files or any programs. Sometimes I disable the right processes and things work (internet redirects happen in safe mode as well) but it seems I am being pinged in the background according to a new incoming Mcafee internet log. Mcafee doesn't work until the system crashes and restarts on it's own (that's when the logs disappeared, very date specific by the way, just the day of the original infection).

I do have a hijack this report as well. Thanks for any help you can give. I am about ready to try to reformat the drive except my original files are at home. I'm working on the nice day part.

additional info. I ran a malwarebytes scan and found an infected registry entry and deleted it with the software. Still getting redirects though. I managed to recover the following trojan names from my virus scanner after that.
generic.dx!fnj
generic.dx!fjp
atemis!3fDD8BB8982A
w32/Virut.a.gen

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE
