I have inherited my daughters dell inspiron 1525 with Intel pentium dual core-Windows Vista basic. It start throwing all kinds of problems from 'winking' title bar when on the internet...going to the freeze.com site. We have Avast on this machine [as well as others] without any problems; however, this machine has had several games download and I believe this is the cause of the infection. I tried a 'schedule boot-time scan with choice of advance options of 'moving infected file to chest' and 'allow delete or move'. It went through 87% and stopped for several hours. I powered the machine off and then it would not boot until I put in the operating system disk for recovery. Now, it gives me a windows error recovery and choices for booting. If left to choose normal the welcome screen will process until I quite it. I had several screens that I saved to this machine but have not been able to recover [darn...next time to my backup drive on the network.] I'm afraid that I know just enough to get myself in trouble. I've taken machines in before and they say...geez, you were almost there. So, this time I thought I would really try to fix it myself.

Appreciate whatever help you can provide. I'm not going any further until I've heard back from you.

PS I probably could have traced some former complaints, but I see the warnings about the Combofix and feel that I'd better wait. If you would like me to view others posts or do a tutorial ... please feel free to direct me. Thanx again!

My first question would be: Is there anything on the machine that you can't live without?

If the answer is yes, then I will ask more questions and try to help you as best I can.

If the answer is no, then I would suggest using the recovery disks to take this machine back to factory and starting nice and fresh.

Hope this helps,

Before you go to that extreme, we can run a few scans

Some types of malware will disable Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and other security tools. If MBAM will not install, try renaming it first.
  • Right-click on the mbam-setup.exe file file and rename it to mysetup.exe.
  • Double-click on mysetup.exe to start the installation.
  • If that did not work, then try renaming and changing the file extension. <- click this link if you do not see the file extension
  • Right-click on the mbam-setup.exe file, rename it to mysetup and change the .exe extension to .scr, .com, .pif, or .bat.
  • Then double-click on mysetup.scr (or whatever extension you renamed it) to begin installation.
If after installation, MBAM will not run, open the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware folder in Program Files.
  • Right-click on mbam.exe, rename it to myscan.exe.
  • Double-click on myscan.exe to launch the program.
  • If that did not work, then try renaming and change the .exe extension in the same way as noted above.
  • Double-click on myscan.scr (or whatever extension you renamed it) to launch the program.
If using Windows Vista, refer to How to Change a File Extension in Windows Vista.

Be sure to update MBAM through the program's interface (preferable method) or manually download the definition updates and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install. Then perform a Quick Scan in normal mode and check all items found for removal. Don't forgot to reboot afterwards. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware. When done, click the Logs tab and copy/paste the contents of the report in your next reply.

Note: MBAM uses Inno Setup instead of the Windows Installer Service to install the program. If installation fails in normal mode, try installing in safe mode. Doing this is usually not advised as MBAM is designed to be at full power when running in normal mode and loses some effectiveness for detection & removal when used in safe mode. For optimal removal, normal mode is recommended so it does not limit the abilities of MBAM. Therefore, after completing a scan it is recommended to uninstall MBAM, then reinstall it in normal mode and perform another Quick Scan.

------------------------------------

The process of cleaning your computer may require you to temporarily disable some security programs. If you are using SpyBot Search and Destroy, please refer to Note 2 at the bottom of this page.

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.

NOTE: Before saving MBAM please rename it to zztoy.exe....now save it to your desktop.

alternate download link 1
alternate download link 2
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself.
  • Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
On the Scanner tab:
  • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
  • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
  • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note:
-- If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. Regardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Note 2:
-- MBAM may make changes to your registry as part of its disinfection routine. If you're using other security programs that detect registry changes (like Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere with the fix or alert you after scanning with MBAM. Please disable such programs until disinfection is complete or permit them to allow the changes. To disable these programs, please view this topic: How To Temporarily Disable Your Anti-virus, Firewall And Anti-malware Programs
---------------------------
Be sure to re-enable your AV and malware scan tools if they were disabled

The best way to start over on a Dell is to use the operating system CD to start a fresh install and the Drivers CD when that has finished to get all other peripherals ( graphics, audio, network, etc ) working.

When running the Windows XP CD you will see many options. The first option will ask you if you want to repair an installation of Windows XP or install a fresh copy. You will want to install a Fresh copy.

It will then take you to hard drive partitions. You may see one or two partitions.

One of them will be large and already say it is formatted NTFS and have a drive letter of "C:". This is the partition you want to use to install Windows XP. The next screen will ask you if you want to format it. The options will be "leave it alone" ( or something similar ) format the drive NTFS, or format the drive NTFS ( quick ). I normally pick NTFS ( Quick ). From there will format the drive, copy files and reboot. Leave the CD in the drive an allow the system to reboot. You should now see the Windows XP boot screen and the rest of the installation of Windows XP will continue from there.

The rest of the screens will be very self-explanatory but if you have any problems, feel free to come back and ask any questions that you might have.

Hope this helps,

Techextreme

The Vista disk will be very similar to the XP installation.

If you would like to try to "fix" the machine before the ultimate "wipe and reload" Garmanma's directions will help you.

It is ultimately your choice which way you would like to go. By following Garmanma's directions, you will learn quite a bit more about what is going on and what happened to your computer.

Hope this helps,

terrific...I really want to understand and appreciate the time invested here. I will follow along with Garmanma's directions...but I'll warn you...I'm more of a hands on type making reading and following directions a little difficult. [My autistic daughter comes by her genes via my husband and I...I KNOW this!!] Hang in the Garmanma...I appreciate your time.

You may be able to get Windows Vista to boot up again using the repair process. The Tutorial is here.

Hope this helps,

Yeah...I'm in safemode with networking, done ATF Cleaner and working with SUPERAntiSpyware but now have a message from Windows Installer "the windows installer service is not accessible in Safe Mode. Please try again when your computer is not in Safe Mode or you can use System Restore to return your machine to previous good state. I will try to restore [from you suggestion above] to use SuperAntiSpyware.

If you have successfully gotten into safe mode w/networking and successfully run MBAM, you may be able to now boot up in normal mode and install and run SuperAntiSpyware.

You may not need to run the "repair" process.
