I'd run a diagnostic on the hard drive, Hard Drive Installation and Diagnostic Tools - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/28744/hard-drive-installation-and-diagnostic-tools/. Long, extended test.

I'd also try a differerent PSU temporarily.

When chkdsk normally encounters a problem with the files system or the hard drive...it generates an onscreen error message. So, I don't really think that it's a hard drive issue...but testing won't hurt.

System overheating is another possibility that provides no warning and does not leave any tracks.
