slow comp please help

hi my computer is very slow and will not let me accsess alot of programs. i am running windows xp and i am able to get an internet connection, but it will not let me use add/ remove programs or internet options in the control panel so i cant maintain my comp. any ideas or help would be very welcome.

Applicable error messages?

Have you tried running chkdsk /r and then defragging the system?

http://www.1securitycenter.com/windows_xp_faq/chkdsk.html. Put check marks in both options (Automatically Fix, Scan For).

Have you checke Event Viewer for possible clues?

Go to start
open run and type

regsvr32 appwiz.cpl
