I have received a fairly new HP Pavilion dv6700 Notebook PC that will start, but then has an error message saying BOOTMGR is missing, then the diaganostics says Replace hard Disk 1.

I know I can get a new hard drive and install it but my concern is that I have no CDs with programs that came with the computer, not even Vista. I do have all of the info about the computer, including serial number. With this information will I be able to download the programs that were on it originally (including Vista OS) from an online site, perhaps HP?

A soldier in Iraq bought this laptop for his mom, knowing that it needed repair. He said his friend he bought it from got a virus while downloading a lot of music. I don't know about that but I would like to get it working for his mother and she has little $$ to spend on it. It seems to be fairly new and has wireless and a webcam. Suggestions, anyone?

Thanks in advance,

Kay D. Missouri

Louis, thank you.

May I ask another question to further clarify? With these disks alone, will I be able to bring and load up what ever programs typically came with the computer? Office programs, Microsoft games, etc.? I really appreciate your input. Kay

Recovery/restore disks are a product of the manufacturer of the system...I've never had a system with such.

But the manufacturer's documentation should cover what such disks do, how they operate, etc.

Typically, restore/recovery CDs return a system to the state it was in when purchased (including programs/options installed at that time).
