ntivirus 2009 attempts to drop onto my machine; hoping I denied it and have no issues. Fully updated XP SP3; McAfee Security Suite; Spybot; and ZoneAlarm. DDS and Rootreveal details included or attached. ~dw

Following the instructions for a DDS and rootreveal per http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/34773/preparation-guide-for-use-before-using-malware-removal-tools-and-requesting-help/

Narrative:
It started with Antivirus 2009 dropping onto one of my laptops; spybot saw the attempted change in registry and pointer to a ?.exe under /tmp. I denied the registry change, pulled the battery so no settings would be saved...booted to safe mode and went back to an earlier system restore. But the system felt "odd" or I was paranoid. I have the "feeling" that it took too many "clicks" to log onto my machine.... couldn't get context to my password box on the first click... took two-three clicks. Odd. Then Outlook 2007 had a dll mismatch, related or coincidence.

My Outlook 2007 said it had a dll mismatch and aborted. It started up the 2nd time ok. Didn't catch the dll name.
Action: I ran a Microsoft Office (full) repair, and no issues reported; SFC: did a scan now, and no issues reported (or at least I didn't see any changes.)

Antivirus: ran Kapersky's on-line scan; McAfee scan; removed McAfee->installed Symantec did a scan> removed Symantec and back to McAfee. No issues reported.

Environment; fully patched XP SP3, latest java and adobe. In addition to adobe acrobat 7.0 professional.
Defenses: McAfee Security Suite, Zonealarm; Spybot, PeerGuardian (which I manually may enable if I'm sharing).

Houskeeping:
Just in case: I removed my ipod software; logitech camera, and anything else that I didn't use regularly and could reinstall. I had earlier run combofix (as a learning tool, which also explains why my autoruns disabled). I did a Kapersky online scan with no issues found* (

*Earlier, before the Antivirus 2009 drop, I removed an email from my spam folder which had an html (malware) attached. Never ran it. And some old system restores which I thought I had purged had an old worm in them.... I just cleared out all of my system restores and created a new/clean restore point.)

How did I catch Antivirus 2009? Not exactly sure. I was browsing a p2p site.... and believe a mouse over (as I didn't click anything) dropped a package onto my machine; which I denied via spybot, but still caught something anyway. I did recently download and install a program to help modify SRT files associated with AVI files.

My thoughts about the scan(s) attached:
/rrbkups is part of lenovo/ibm's configuration, not an issue
event viewer shows that I turned off my memeobackup for testing, which I did.
turned off mcafee virus scan last night to do a kapersky scan which found nothing.
mismatch in the mcafee files is normal behavior..given they are live files when I ran rootreveal.

Concerning my McAfee firewall; zonealarm firewall; and leaving windows firewall enabled: have had it like that for 9 months with never an issue. Understand it may not be "preferred."

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine.  Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links.  Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool.  No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note:  You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run.  After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection.  Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE
