I believe (can't remember, I never paid attention) that the install feature of XP...has a cancel function within it.

FWIW: http://www.ehow.com/how_5231846_cancel-win...xp-install.html

Generally speaking...you cannot repair an XP install with a disk reflecting an earlier SP-level than what is currently on the system. If I remember correctly, this will result in an overwrite of the system files and basically result in a new install. I don't believe that any of the programs installed will function effectively...but I really don't remember what happened when I did this (just to see what would take place).
