I have an old one I want to get rid of , but how does one make sure anyone who refurbishes a computer, can't somehow get private info from my computer?

A low level format should do the trick; it will completely wipe the drive. Note that an OS will need to be installed on the machine after doing this.

Use the free version of Active@ KillDisk.
Or Darik's Boot And Nuke
