Hi,

It has been decided that my computer is free from malware, so I've been referred to this forum.

I recently downloaded malwarebytes anti-malware program. The instructions were good and it worked fine. But, now I can't access my calendar for reminders. I get a generic error message saying "Microsoft Works 8 has encountered a problem and must close."
It does not say what problem.

I have a Works 8 installation disk, but I think if I just reinstall Works, I'll lose all the notes on my calendar.

The only other thing I use from Works is a simple database which is working fine. Only the calendar reminder feature won't run. If I reinstall Works I could lose all the info on my database and I don't feel like re-entering over 1000 files.

I have the database backed up and it looks like I 'should' be able to run the backup file if the original gets wiped.
However, although I have backed up all the files in Works calendar folder, I don't know which one(s) hold the reminder info. I've tried replacing existing files with the backups, but they don't run so it looks like the problem is not with the calendar data files themselves, but something more basic to Works 8.

I recently found that if I right click on WksCal.exe and choose "Run as..." and use "administrator ", I get a different error message. This one simply says that Works could not find some needed files and suggests that they may have been moved or erased. It does not say what files.

I'm using Windows XP Home, and I have an installation disk for Microsoft Works 8. I have never needed any system disks and things were working fine before I ran Malwarebytes Anti-Malware program.
I don't use Microsoft Office though it came pre-installed on the computer when I bought it back in 2003, or so.

I've tried rolling back to a date before I used the anti-malware program but it had no effect on this problem.

One more thing I tried was going to the Add/Remove program on the Control Panel. I have 2 entries for Microsoft Works. When I click on a support link, I get the option to repair the existing installations. I have tried this for both entries and niether one works.

I hope someone here knows how to get Works 8 calendar reminder working so I don't have to re-enter all the reminders.
Thanks.

Did you try SFC.exe?

Found this:

No, I didn't try Sfc.exe

I looked at the link to the guide for using it and it is all over my head. I'm afraid I'm going to get myself into more trouble. I've never needed my system disks since I bought the computer. I don't even know where they are at the moment, so I don't dare run Sfc.exe from the looks of it.

I'm hoping there is an easy fix.

Everything was fine till I ran MBAM.

What could MBAM have changed? Can't I just change it back?

BTW, the post options below say I'm receiving notification of replies, but I'm not. How do I get notified?

Most, if not all, of the Microsoft software...have options for repairing the programs installed...via Add/Remove Programs.

Have you tried this?

Yes, I tried the repair option in the Add/Remove list and it didn't work for either Works installation. (I don't know why there are 2, but they've been there a long time and worked fine till now.)

Well, not only isn't there an easy fix, there isn't even a difficult fix.

I tried uninstalling Works 8 (some parts would not uninstall).
Then I tried re-installing Works 8 (some parts wouldn't re-install or update)

After all was said and done, the calendar STILL won't work.

I'm sorry I tried Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware program.

Did you look in Mbam quarantine file and see if it's there?

Garmanma,

Here is the log from the first time I ran MBAM. The problem started right after this. I don't see anything I recognize as being for the calendar:

Hi sleepless,
Wondering if you thought of restoring your system to a point before you ran the software which you think caused the problem?
This would restore your computer back how it was on the date you select from the list of system backups.
It's in programs | accessories |system , I think.
best of luck.
