I've been trying to disinfect my computer for several days now but I'm not getting anywhere.

I've got the infected computer isolated from all networks and sitting next to my un-infected computer that I'm using to connect to the internet.

The infected computer has or had the following.

1) B
2) Braviax
3) Anti-Virsu Pro 2010
4) Total Security

It's running Windows XP Media Center...

I've been reading the threads here and tried a lot of the stuff, except ComboFix and Avenger, cause of the disclaimers not to run them without supervision, but nothing seems to work.

When running any of the stuff here, is it OK to transfer files back and forth between the infected and uninfected computer via a USB memory stick?

Please Help!!!

Install this on the uninfected machine and attach the thumb drive:

Please download
Flash_Disinfector.exe by sUBs and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click Flash_Disinfector.exe to run it and follow any prompts that may appear.
  • The utility may ask you to insert your flash drive and/or other removable drives. Please do so and allow the utility to clean up those drives as well.
  • Hold down the Shift key when inserting the drive until Windows detects it to keep autorun.inf from executing if it is present.
  • Wait until it has finished scanning and then exit the program.
  • Reboot your computer when done.
Note: As part of its routine, Flash_Disinfector will create a hidden folder named autorun.inf in each partition and every USB drive that was plugged in when you ran it. Do not delete this folder...it will help protect your drives from future infection by keeping the autorun file from being installed on the root drive and running other malicious files.

We Need to check for Rootkits with RootRepeal
  • Download RootRepeal from the following location and save it to your desktop.
  • Extract RootRepeal.exe from the archive (If you did not use the "Direct Download" mirror).
  • Open Posted Image on your desktop.
  • Click the Posted Image tab.
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • Check all seven boxes: Posted Image
  • Push Ok
  • Check the box for your main system drive (Usually C:), and press Ok.
  • Allow RootRepeal to run a scan of your system. This may take some time.
  • Once the scan completes, push the Posted Image button. Save the log to your desktop, using a distinctive name, such as RootRepeal.txt. Include this report in your next reply, please.

----------------------------------

Please note: If Rootrepeal fails to run, try this step: Click Settings - Options. Set the Disk Access slider to High

Also try: right-click on rootrepeal.exe and rename it to tatertot.scr

Downloaded the flash disinfector on my clean desktop and prepped a thumb drive with it.

Downloaded RootRepeal on my clean desktop and copied it over to the infected laptop the prepped thumb drive.

Ran RootRepeal

Report/Scan/ Clicked on all 7 boxes... Push OK

It started scanning and found 3 files locked to the System API, the hiberfil.sys in C:\

and two other programs. Then RootRepeal disappeared and I was back at the desktop.

Now when I try to run RootRepeal, it pops up a window saying Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item.

Tried copying a new RootRepeal over from the Thumb Drive but I renamed it Tatertot.scr first.

Clicked Settings - Options and Set the Disk Access Slider to High... but it did the same thing.

After rebooting after running RootRepeal the first boot comes back with a System Shutting down Message.

This shutdown was initiated by NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM

status code -1073741482

After the system shuts itself down, it reboots back up to the desktop.

Please download Win32kDiag.exe by AD and save it to your desktop.
alternate download 1
alternate download 2
  • This tool will create a diagnostic report for me to review.
  • Double-click on Win32kDiag.exe to run and let it finish.
  • When it states Finished! Press any key to exit..., press any key on your keyboard to close the program.
  • A file called Win32kDiag.txt should be created on your Desktop.
  • Open that file in Notepad and copy/paste the entire contents (from Starting up... to Finished! Press any key to exit...) in your next reply.

    --------------------------------------
Go to Posted Image > Run..., then copy and paste this command into the open box: cmd
Click OK.
At the command prompt C:\>, copy and paste the following command and press Enter:
DIR /a/s %windir%\scecli.dll %windir%\netlogon.dll %windir%\eventlog.dll >Log.txt & START notepad Log.txt
A file called log.txt should be created on your Desktop.
Open that file and copy/paste the contents in your next reply.

Now that you were successful in creating those two logs you need to post them in our HJT forum:
First, try to run a DDS / HJT log as outlined in our preparation guide:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/34773/preparation-guide-for-use-before-using-malware-removal-tools-and-requesting-help/
If it won't run, don't worry, just give a brief description and tell them that these logs was all you could get to run successfully
Post them here:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/f/22/virus-trojan-spyware-and-malware-removal-logs/

The HJT team is extremely busy, so be patient and good luck

why won't my laptop work?

Having grandkids is God's way of giving you a 2nd chance because you were too busy working your butt off the 1st time around
Do not send me PMs with problems that should be posted in the forums. Keep it in the forums, so everyone benefits

Thank you for the help Garmanma.

I tried running DDS but it popped open a window and then immediately closed.

I've posted on the Hijack This Forum per your instructions.

You're certainly not alone. I've got these very same symptoms on my computer and got half-way thru step 6 on the HT help-procedure instrux. and the DDS black window came up, but immediately closed, and I'm stuck there. What is this?? What a frustrating invasion of our PC's!
