I have never posted like this before, so forgive me if I am not doing this right. I will try to explain the problem as best as I can. I am a programmer by trade, and have been doing Internet Tech support for and ISP for about 7 years, and for the first time I have hit upon something that has completely stumped me (it was bound to happen right ;)
The computer in question is Windows Vista - 32 bit and it WAS running AVG anti-virus. If is my daughters computer so I don't use it all that often, and I noticed I was getting redirected on a google search, but could get to sites if I typed the address in the address bar. I found and removed MyWebSearch from programs and features. Then I noticed that AVG had been finding a virus for the past few months and was unable to clean it - Rootkit/agent.dq - as well as a couple of others. AVG had not run a scan in 2 days - and I was unable to manually run a scan. SO i rebooted and the same thing.
Next thing I tried to do was to run online scans at trend micro and at live onecare - both generated errors.
Next thing I did was to upgrade to Service Pack 2 - it was available when I checked windows updates.
Then I decided to uninstall AVG and install a trial verson on ONECARE.
Once onecare was installed (took 4 tries because AVG was not uninstalling - then onecare would not install) Once I finally got onecare to install - it immediately blocked 2 programs - msa.exe and a.exe (firewall) - then it detected a virus (sorry, but I did not notice the name) and as soon as I tried to clean it - it shut one care down. Followed all the steps for troubleshooting on this at onecare 2 times - including uninstalling and re-installing the program.
I manually removed msa.exe and a.exe
Then I tried to run hijack this - and as SOON as it starts - it shuts right down.
Then I tried to run GMER.exe - and this scans for quite a while and then shuts right down.
Then I tried to run Malwarebytes and as soon as it starts something goes from 0 to 1 and it immediately shuts down (not sure what because it shuts this down so quick)
Tried to do a system restore back - but there are no restore points more than 2 days old???
I am really not sure what to do at this point - I do not want to have to format this PC because all of her music is on her (she composes music) - and all of her band pictures and videos that she has created etc.
Is there anyware to clean up with virus without formatting ??? I would appreciate any help.
Thank you so much
I forgot to mention - that when Hijackthis AND malwarebytes stop working - they can't be opened again unless they are reinstalled - i get the error message
