how to startup a mac when only the apple screen is present

my mac stops on the apple page and goes no further than that i wanted to find a way to completly refurbish this computer

geo420, if you have the install cd roms that came with the computer, put them in and hold down the 'C' key while the computer boots. Keep holding it down until you see the installation menus pop up. then follow the steps from there. Just FYI, this will essentially erase all the data on the disk! However, it sounds like that is what you're going for.
