Google search engine redirect - Trojan horse?

Okay - I've figured out that I am infected with this spyware/malware/virus - whatever thing! I just can't seem to get rid of it. The other day I was trying to download a video, and when I clicked on it I got the BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH! When I rebooted, I discovered that whenever I did a search on Google and then clicked on one of the results, it would direct me to some weird ad instead of the site I wanted. I've done scans with AVG, Malware Bytes Antimalware and SuperAntiSpyware... all to NO AVAIL. I just want to know how to get rid of this nasty little beastie and be happy again. I swear not to go clicking on weird links ever again (cross my heart)!

Windows 97 - I think! I'm a total doofus about computer stuff. Also, I found another post that further explains what problems I'm having: When I run a scan (AVG, MalwareBytes) it only runs for about 3 seconds and then quits. Then when I try to run the program again (from the desktop icon) it gives me an error message that says: "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permission to access them."

Also, I've been following the suggestions that were given to the person who had a similar problem, and it says to download and run Process Explorer v11.33. When I click the link and then click download, I get a zip file which says "Open" or "Save" (instead of a box that says "Run"). The instructions say to then click File and Save As to creat a log and then cut and past into the next post, but I'm not even getting to the "run" part!

Hello please post your last Malwarebytes log it will prvide us some info..
The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply. Be sure to post the complete log to include the top portion which shows MBAM's database version and your operating system.

I tried to download the SINO program, but, after it seemed to download I got this error message: "NOT LATEST VERSION: This is not the latest version of SINO. Please update SINO to continue use. Latest Version: 2.4.9.9" I looked for the program in my program list, but it was not there. I also tried going to the Artellos site you linked, but I didn't find a download for the new version.

Also, I don't have the last Malware log because after I did the scan and then tried to go back in, it wouldn't let me (I got the error message noted above). I tried to re-install it, and it gets all the way through and says "The database was succesfully updated from version 2775 to version 2852." Then I click on OK and click on "Perform full scan" on the C:drive. It then runs for about 3 seconds and quits. Same thing happens when I try to re-download the SuperAntiSpyware. If I just click on the icon on my desktop, it gives me the error message noted above.

run MBAM (MalwareBytes):

NOTE: Before saving MBAM please rename it to zztoy.exe....now save it to your desktop.

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.

MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you. Temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the definition updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
On the Scanner tab:
  • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
  • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
  • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply. Be sure to post the complete log to include the top portion which shows MBAM's database version and your operating system.
  • Exit MBAM when done.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be asked to reboot your computer so MBAM can proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

No dice. I changed my AVG settings first regarding registry changes, then I downloaded MBAM and when it gave me the choice to "Run" or "Save" I saved it as zztoy.exe on my desktop. Then I opened it and did everything you said, which was find up until I hit "scan" in "Perform quick scan." It goes for 3 seconds and then disappears. Also, I clicked on the link you had regarding the rules.exe and got this message: "404 Not Found. /mbam-rules.exe was not found on this server. Resin/4.0.1"

P.S. I tried both MBAM download links you provided!

Hi,Katie,I think these problems with Sino were from Win 98. Let's try one other tool, this will probably sun more than an hour, (hopefully it runs).

DrWeb-CureIt
Before we start fixing anything you should print out these instructions or copy them to a NotePad file so they will be accessible. Some steps will require you to disconnect from the Internet or use Safe Mode and you will not have access to this page.

Please download Dr.Web CureIt and save it to your desktop. DO NOT perform a scan yet.

Note: The file will be randomly named (i.e. 5mkuvc4z.exe).

Reboot your computer in "Safe Mode" using the F8 method. To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup (but before the Windows icon appears) press the F8 key repeatedly. A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode".

Scan with Dr.Web CureIt as follows:
  • Double-click on the randomly named file to open the program and click Start. (There is no need to update if you just downloaded the most current version
  • Read the Virus check by DrWeb scanner prompt and click Ok where asked to Start scan now? Allow the setup.exe to load if asked by any of your security programs.
  • The Express scan will automatically begin.
    (This is a short scan of files currently running in memory, boot sectors, and targeted folders).
  • If prompted to dowload the Full version Free Trial, ignore and click the X to close the window.
  • If an infected object is found, you will be prompted to move anything that cannot be cured. Click Yes to All. (This will move any detected files to the C:\Documents and Settings\userprofile\DoctorWeb\Quarantine folder if they can't be cured)
  • After the Express Scan is finished, put a check next to Complete scan to scan all local disks and removable media.
  • In the top menu, click Settings > Change settings, and uncheck "Heuristic analysis" under the "Scanning" tab, then click Apply, Ok.
  • Back at the main window, click the green arrow "Start Scanning" button on the right under the Dr.Web logo.
  • Please be patient as this scan could take a long time to complete.
  • When the scan has finished, a message will be displayed at the bottom indicating if any viruses were found.
  • Click Select All, then choose Cure > Move incurable.
  • In the top menu, click file and choose save report list.
  • Save the DrWeb.csv report to your desktop.
  • Exit Dr.Web Cureit when done.
  • Important! Reboot your computer because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
  • After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web in your next reply. (You can use Notepad to open the DrWeb.cvs report)

UGH! I'm starting to get discouraged! I got through downloading, saving and running the quick scan on Dr. Web CureIt, but as soon as it started running the complete scan, it quit after about 5 seconds.

Also, I told you the wrong operating system - it's Windows XP Home Edition (sorry!).

Ok ,then run this now please. It should run.

Download this Utility and save it to your Desktop.
Double-click the Utility to run it and and let it finish.
When it states Finished! Press any key to exit, press any key to close the program.
It will save a .txt file to your desktop automatically. Double-click on the Win32kDiag.txt file that is located on your Desktop and post the entire contents of that log as part of the reply in the topic you will create below..

This does not look like a complete Win32kDiag.txt file as the last entry show say Finished!

From the log portion that you have posted, it appears your system is infected with a new rootkit variant that has become quite pervasive. The rootkit itself is a protection module used to terminate a variety of security tools by changing the permissions on targeted programs so that they cannot run or complete scans.

Since you say this a work computer, have you contacted and advised your IT Department? In most work environments, the IT staff implement specific policies and procedures for the use of computer equipment and related resources. In fact, many companies will require you to read those policies and sign a statement of understanding. These official procedures are designed and implemented to provide security and certain restrictions to protect the network. This allows all users to safely use business resources with minimum risk of malware infection, illegal software, and exposure to inappropriate Internet sites or other prohibited activity. We cannnot take action to help someone circumvent such policies.

Further, the IT staff generally has procedures in place to deal with infections on client machines and the network. As such, they may not approve of employees seeking help at an online forum or outside the business office. The malware you are dealing with may have infected the network. If that's the case, the IT Department needs to be advised right away so they can take the appropriate measures.

Nope, no IT Department here! It's a small office and this is a computer that I brought from my home to use at work. I own it! :thumbsup:

I ran that scan twice and it stopped at the same place both times. What can I do to get rid of the rootkit problem?

Disinfection will require the use of more powerful tools than we recommend in this forum.

Rootkits, backdoor Trojans, Botnets, and IRCBots are very dangerous because they compromise system integrity by making changes that allow it to by used by the attacker for malicious purposes. Rootkits are used by Trojans to conceal its presence (hide from view) in order to prevent detection of an attacker's software and make removal more difficult. Many rootkits can hook into the Windows 32-bit kernel, and patch several APIs to hide new registry keys and files they install. They can disable your anti-virus and security tools to prevent detection and removal. Remote attackers use backdoors as a means of accessing and taking control of a computer that bypasses security mechanisms. This type of exploit allows them to steal sensitive information like passwords, personal and financial data which is send back to the hacker. To learn more about these types of infections, you can refer to:If your computer was used for online banking, has credit card information or other sensitive data on it, you should stay disconnected from the Internet until your system is fully cleaned. All passwords should be changed immediately to include those used for banking, email, eBay, paypal and online forums. You should consider them to be compromised and change each password using a clean computer, not the infected one. If not, an attacker may get the new passwords and transaction information. If using a router, you need to reset it with a strong logon/password so the malware cannot gain control before connect again. Banking and credit card institutions should be notified of the possible security breach.

Although the infection has been identified and may be removed, your PC has likely been compromised and there is no way to be sure the computer can ever be trusted again. It is dangerous and incorrect to assume the computer is secure even if the malware appears to have been removed. In some instances an infection may have caused so much damage to your system that it cannot be completely cleaned or repaired so you can never be sure that you have completely removed a rootkit. The malware may leave so many remnants behind that security tools cannot find them. Tools that claim to be able to remove rootkits cannot guarantee that all traces of it will be removed. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of malware, the best course of action is to wipe the drive clean, reformat and reinstall the OS. Please read:Should you decide not to follow that advice, we will do our best to help clean the computer of any infections but we cannot guarantee it to be trustworthy or that the removal will be successful. If you wish to proceed, please do the following.

Please read the pinned topic titled "Preparation Guide For Use Before Posting A Hijackthis Log". If you cannot complete a step, then skip it and continue with the next. In Step 6 there are instructions for downloading and running DDS which will create a Pseudo HJT Report as part of its log.

Start a new topic and post your DDS log along with the Win32kDiag.txt reports in the HijackThis Logs and Malware Removal forum, NOT here, for assistance by the HJT Team Experts. A member of the Team will walk you through, step by step, on how to clean your computer. If DDS will not run, then just post the results of the Win32kDiag.txt. Be sure to include a note that you tried to follow the Prep Guide but were unable to get DDS to run.

Please be patient. It may take a while to get a response because the HJT Team members are very busy working logs posted before yours. They are volunteers who will help you out as soon as possible. Once you have made your post and are waiting, please DO NOT "bump" your post or make another reply until it has been responded to by a member of the HJT Team. Generally the staff checks the forum for postings that have 0 replies as this makes it easier for them to identify those who have not been helped. If you post another response there will be 1 reply. A team member, looking for a new log to work may assume another HJT Team member is already assisting you and not open the thread to respond.

Okay, I am going to follow the Preparation Guide, but I have a question. If I backup my computer to an external hard drive, or using the software, etc., won't I just backup the malware infection too?

Also, is it a GIVEN that if I have this rootkit infection, all my info IS compromised? And how do I know for sure it IS this rootkit malware? I'm just trying to figure out how far I need to go with this (and I am reading the links you put in your message!)
