I have Windows Vista, IE 8.

For the past two weeks or so, I've noticed a lag in my computer. For instance, when I move my mouse it takes a few seconds to react. Also, when I type, there is a slight pausse before the letters start to appear. Just an overall slowness and delay in response time for everything.

First, I tried closing a few startup programs through msconfig. My PC starts up quicker now, but I still have the lag.

Next, I tried running the usual antivirus programs. I ran AVG, Spybot, and Ad-Aware. Came up with a few viruses and programs that it successfully removed. I also ran Cleanup, which I haven't in a while. It was able to clean up about 4.5 Gigs of junk.

Unfortunately, I am still experiencing the lag. It's like there's some program running in the background that is slowing everything down.

  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

I have Windows Vista, IE 8.

I've noticed a lag in my computer for a few weeks now.

I haven't run any A/V programs in a while.

My computer is a little bit fast,er but I still have some lag. It's not the same speed as it was about 5-6 weeks ago. One thing I notice now, is when I close IE, if I have a few tabs open it will take 10-15 seconds before the window actually closes. I did not have this problem before.

Hi jaxican,

There's nothing showing on the logs. First thing to do is rule out malware as the issue. After that we will run a few checks, but I will probably then need to refer you to another forum.

We Need to check for Rootkits with RootRepeal
  • Download RootRepeal from the following location and save it to your desktop.

    First Location
    Second Location
    Third Location

  • Open Posted Image on your desktop.
  • Click the Posted Image tab.
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • Check all seven boxes: Posted Image
  • Push Ok
  • Check the box for your main system drive (Usually C:), and press Ok.
  • Allow RootRepeal to run a scan of your system. This may take some time.
  • Once the scan completes, push the Posted Image button. Save the log to your desktop, using a distinctive name, such as RootRepeal.txt. Include this report in your next reply, please.
Next please run MBAM

Please download Posted Image Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application or, if you are using Vista, right-click and select Run As Administrator on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
  • On the Scanner tab:
    • Make sure the "Perform Full Scan" option is selected.
    • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
  • Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. Regardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware. MBAM may make changes to your registry as part of its disinfection routine. If you're using other security programs that detect registry changes, they may alert you after scanning with MBAM. Please permit the program to allow the changes.

Finally let's collect a more detailed report of the PC

We need to create an OTL Report
  • Please download OTL By OldTimer
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • Two reports will open, copy and paste them in a reply here:[list]
    OTListIt.txt <-- Will be opened
    Extra.txt <-- Will be minimized
Thanks :(

Hello m0le,

I tried the three programs you suggested above. All ran fine except for RootRepeal. When I tried to run the program, it would scan for about 20-30 minutes and then an error message would pop up. I tried closing the program and running again, but the same issue happens. Now, the error message doesn't pop up but after about 20 minutes the program shuts itself down.

From what I've read, RootRepeal is quite notorious for crashing. Any ideas how to avoid this? Can I change anything in the options to avoid this?

The other two programs ran fine and I have the required info saved to post in a reply. I'm just waiting for RootRepeal to run correctly so that I can post everything you asked for.

Thank you,

Jax

No problem, jaxican. Please run a similar program called Gmer as below.

Please download GMER from one of the following locations and save it to your desktop:
  • Main Mirror
This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)
  • Zipped Mirror
This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.
  • Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
  • Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security programs will not conflict with gmer's driver.
  • Double-click on the randomly named GMER file (i.e. n7gmo46c.exe) and allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • Note: If you downloaded the zipped version, extract the file to its own folder such as C:\gmer and then double-click on gmer.exe.

  • GMER will open to the Rootkit/Malware tab and perform an automatic quick scan when first run. (do not use the computer while the scan is in progress)
  • If you receive a WARNING!!! about rootkit activity and are asked to fully scan your system...click NO.
  • Now click the Scan button. If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save... button to save the scan results to your Desktop. Save the file as gmer.log.
  • Click the Copy button and paste the results into your next reply.
  • Exit GMER and re-enable all active protection when done.
-- If you encounter any problems, try running GMER in Safe Mode.

Then post all three logs next. :(

That's clean all the way through, jaxican.

Let's try a few checks and see if anything comes up on the PC performance side of things.

Let's clear up your PC a bit

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune. Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main "Select Files to Delete" choose: Select All.
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

If you are using Firefox and this has caused page loading problems then please clear your private data. To do this go
to the Tools menu, select Clear Private Data, and then check Cache. Click Clear Private Data Now.

Then close Firefox and then reopen it.

Then

Please Download Flash Cookie Killer by Bobbie Flekman and save it to your Desktop

==========

:( Warning :)

Steps (1-3) will delete all existing highscores and game settings for flash games. Steps (4-8) might prevent the ability to save highscores in some games all together.

==========
  • Double click Posted Image from your desktop

  • Check "Everything but Adobe Site Settings"

  • Mouse click "Make it so!"
    Posted Image

  • Now go to the Adobe Flash Player Settings Manager

  • In the "Website Storage Settings" choose the "Delete All Sites" tab then "Confirm"
    Posted Image

  • Next in the "Global Storage Settings" uncheck "Allow third-party Flash content to store on your computer"
    Posted Image

  • Finally in the "Global Privacy Settings" choose "Always Deny" then "Confirm"
    Posted Image

  • You have now successfully deleted cookies stored and changed the Flash Players default settings to prevent access in the future.

Now let's look at some possible problem areas

Startup issues

Please download StartupLite. to your desktop and run it. It will explain any optional auto-start programs on your system, and offer the option to stop these programs from starting at startup. This will result in fewer programs running when you boot your system, and should improve performance.

Security updates

Download Security Check by screen317 from here or here.
  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

Conflicting hardware

Please download ConflictInfo by aommaster to your desktop.
  • Double click Posted Image

  • Press Posted Image to begin.

  • It shall produce a ConflictInfo.txt on your desktop.

  • Please copy and paste the log in your next reply.
Let me know if the PC improves at any stage and remember to post the two logs. Thanks :(

First off, thanks for all your help so far. I ran all of the programs above. It's hard to say whether the issue is "fixed" or not. Sometimes the lag comes and goes. It will be okay for a day or two and then the next day, when I have a few tabs open or am downloading a podcast, the lag will be great again. Just this weekend, the mouse response time was unbelievably slow, as was the delay between typing and the letters appearing on the screen.

Do you think it could have something to do with memory? I don't use that much memory, I don't think. I don't play any video games and just use my PC for MS Office and browsing the internet.

Security Check checkup:

Looks like there's no conflicting devices. I'm not sure if that's good or bad. It's like the antiviruses. There weren't any found on my PC, which is great...but it means we still haven't discovered where the lag is coming from. Troubling!
