I am building an AMD computer and I have everything picked out. However I am torn between two CPUs.

The first is: AMD Athlon II X4 620 Propus 2.6GHz 4 x 512KB L2 Cache Socket AM3 95W Quad-Core

The other is: AMD Phenom II X3 720 2.8GHz 3 x 512KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache Socket AM3 95W Triple-Core Black

I need some input on which one is better for all-around gaming and multitasking.

I'm basically looking for the most bang for my buck. There is about a $20 difference in price between the two (the quad core is cheaper).

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

Go with the Phenom II. It has more cache and a higher clock speed. Unless you are running new games, a quad core might be a waste. If you do run such games, the Phenom II X4 line would offer better performance. The Athlon line is meant for low end or low power users, Phenom is meant for people who want extra power. I also suggest going for the highest clock speed you can afford in a given line.

DJ,

I'm also looking at the AMD Athlon II X4 630 Propus 2.8GHz 4 x 512KB L2 Cache Socket AM3 95W Quad-Core

Would you still put the Phenom II above this as well?

Between the two and only a $20 difference the X3 by far for gaming, etc. The 620 is a great new offering for a budget build but everything I have read it really isn't a gaming cpu.

I looked up the X3 at NewEgg and for a budget build I don't think you could go wrong. I've been seriously considering upgrading my family's second PC which is a socket 939 system. I might give this cpu serious consideration.

None of the Athlon II's have L3 cache and the Phenom II CPU's are made for power, unlike the Athlon's. The Phenom II's, when clocked at the same speed using the same number of cores, will out perform the Athlon II. Depending on the games you play, you may not need a quad as not all games support it well. Here are some suggested Phenom II CPU's.

AMD Phenom II X2 550 Black Edition Callisto 3.1GHz - This is good because it has a higher clock speed than the Athlon with the L3 cache. $100

AMD Phenom II X3 720 2.8GHz - In between power users and standard users lie a middle ground where dual core may not offer the power and a quad core might be too much. This triple-core CPU fills that niche. $119

AMD Phenom II X4 945 Deneb 3.0GHz - For gaming, I suggest using a CPU with a clock speed of 2.8GHz. or higher. This quad has just that. $169

AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition Deneb 3.2GHz - One of the best CPU's AMD has. $189

Thanks guys.

I am ordering everything today and I decided on the Phenom II X3.

It seems to offer the most in the 100-120 dollar range.

Thanks again for your input.
