Hi, I was just wondering if someone could take a look at my HijackThis log to ensure that nothing "bad" is running on my computer. I don't believe I am having any issues that I am aware of. I just wanted to make sure everything is okay.

Also, I would like to know where I should go to read about using and managing AVG 8.5 free, and what it finds, etc. In addition, I have noticed some entries containing "HP" which I don't know what they are. I used to have an HP printer, but I uninstalled it and no longer use it or its software on this computer. I have and use a Canon printer currently.

Also, in my "backups" section under configuration there are some items in there that I would like to know about because a few look suspicious. However, I do not know how to post those on here other than typing them out which would take too long.

Is there anywhere I can find these items and copy and paste them onto this thread? Or just anyway to post those on here? If I must type them out, I will but I want to know if there is an easier way first.

Lastly, in my registry under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>SYSTEM>ControlSet001>Enum>Root>LEGACY_SDAUXSERVICE>0000, I know this was installed by spyware doctor, which at the time I did not know it was a pay only software and uninstalled it, but I am unable to delete any of the PC Tools or spyware doctor items at this location. I also cannot remove the entire folder: LEGACY_SDAUXSERVICE. I really do not want any remaining things from PC Tools or Spyware Doctor left on my computer at all, please help! Under the 0000 there are seven items. Hope this info helps.

Thanks for your help!

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

PS> Please turn off Word Wrap in notepad before you post. IT makes the logs much more readable.

If I don't respond within 2 days, please feel free to PM me.
Please don't ask for help via PM. The forums are there for a reason. Please post in the forums so others may benefit as well.

I have noticed some entries containing "HP" which I don't know what they are. I used to have an HP printer, but I uninstalled it and no longer use it or its software on this computer. I have and use a Canon printer currently.

Also, in my "backups" section under configuration (in HijackThis) there are some items in there that I would like to know about because a few look suspicious.

Hi,

I do not recommend that you have more than one anti virus product installed and running on your computer at a time. The reason for this is that if both products have their automatic (Real-Time) protection switched on, then those products which do not encrypt the virus strings within them can cause other anti virus products to cause "false alarms". It can also lead to a clash as both products fight for access to files which are opened again this is the resident/automatic protection. In general terms, the two programs may conflict and cause:
1) False Alarms: When the anti virus software tells you that your PC has a virus when it actually doesn't.
2) System Performance Problems: Your system may lock up due to both products attempting to access the same file at the same time.
Therefore please go to add/remove in the control panel and remove either McAfee or AVG.

Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This changed from what we know in 2006 read this article:

http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546

I suggest you remove the program now. Click on start > run > and then paste the following into the "open" field: appwiz.cpl and press OK. From within Add or Remove Programs uninstall the following if they exist: Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player.

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
  • Temporarily disable isable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
Usually this can be done via a right click on the System Tray icon, check this tutorial for disabling the most common security programs: Link

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

If you need help, see this link:

The LEGACY keys are only accessible for the system and not the user. This is not a special behaviour from Spyware Doctor, but generally true for all LEGACY keys.

I will focus on removing the malware from your system for now, we can remove that key once your PC is clean. Should I forget to come back to it, please remind me. :(

First off, thank you very much for such fast action. I greatly appreciate it. I have done what you asked in the previous post and will paste it below. I would like to inform you that I spent most of the night fighting some kind of new virus I have never encountered before that kept shutting certain programs (mozilla, ie, etc.) down.

About the AVG and McAfee, I only keep the McAfee on my computer for the firewall because I have no other firewall program. I am in college and have no extra money to pay for a professional full system. So, I have been using AVG for it's virus scan and other tools and just keeping McAfee's firewall turned on without running the scans and such. Anyway the new virus was something along the lines of "net.net". Should I rerun the previous scans and post them as well again?

Not to be ungrateful or disrespectful, but I have not hard false alarms or my system lock up because of the two of them. However, is there a free, very good firewall program that might replace the firewall I have with McAfee? Does AVG run virus scans on files while they are downloading, because I know my McAfee does that.

I have removed Viewpoint Media Player as per your instructions.

I hope I did everything right. While ComboFix Rebooted my computer for the last time, my normal programs started while it said not to start any so I quickly shut them all down; I hope that did not mess anything up.

Hi,

this actually looks fine.
I agree that in some cases 2 anti virus programs run fine alongside on a PC, however I've seen cases, where the installation of a second anti virus program left the PC unbootable or an update to one of the 2 installed programs froze the PC after login. The fact that you have a running system now sadly does not mean that the 2 programs will always go well together.

We have a tutorial on firewalls, where the most common firewalls (free and non-free) are presented: Link. I myself have been very happy with the Kerio/Sunbelt Firewall.
AVG also has an On-Access scanner, that means a file gets scanned whenever it is accessed, so your downloads should be scanned when saved to your PC. If you are a satisfied user of McAfee why not simply use only McAfee?

There are a couple of leftovers we need to remove with Combofix:

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

3. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

File::
c:\program files\Common Files\sibypivit.bin
FileLook::
c:\windows\system32\drivers\atapi.sys

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

Posted Image

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.

Here is the log. ComboFix updated before it ran, I do not know if that is what was supposed to happen or affect it at all.

Hi,

things are looking good. Are you still having problems?

Your log looks clean, just to be safe, I would like to ask for an online scan with Eset:

I'd like us to scan your machine with ESET OnlineScan
  • Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
    ESET OnlineScan
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    • Click on Posted Image to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Check Posted Image
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Check Posted Image
  • Push the Start button.
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, push Posted Image
  • Push Posted Image, and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • Push Posted Image
Please post back the log from Eset in your next reply.

My computer freezes when using firefox sometimes recently but only firefox freezes. The rest still functions. My total hard drive is 68G and I have about 40G used, I don't know if this could be causing it to slow down sometimes. I am going to remove McAfee soon as I have installed the Sunbelt Personal Firewall, as per your suggestion. Should I also uninstall Lavasoft's Ad-Aware with McAfee?

Anyway, here is the ESET log:

C:\Qoobox\Quarantine\C\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\atapi.sys.vir Win32/Olmarik.OF virus deleted - quarantined

Hi,

The file ESET found was already quarantined, so I do not see any active malware on your PC. :( The next important step would be to bring your PC up to date:

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 6 and save it to your desktop.
  • Look for "Java Runtime Environment (JRE)" JRE 6 Update 16.
  • Click the Download button to the right.
  • Select your Platform: "Windows".
  • Select your Language: "Multi-language".
  • Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • Click Continue and the page will refresh.
  • Under Required Files, check the box for Windows Offline Installation, click the link below it and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button and follow the onscreen instructions for the Java uninstaller.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u16-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
-- If using Windows Vista and the installer refuses to launch due to insufficient user permissions, then Run As Administrator.
-- If you choose to update via the Java applet in Control Panel, uncheck the option to install the Toolbar unless you want it.
-- The uninstaller incorporated in this release removes previous Updates 10 and above, but does not remove older versions, so they still need to be removed manually.

Note: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications. To disable the JQS service if you don't want to use it, go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter. Click Ok and reboot your computer.

Your Adobe Reader is also out of date. Please uninstall it and download the latest version from Adobe: Download
Please untick all proposed toolbars unless you really want them.

Windows needs about 10% of the system partition to be empty. So this shouldn't be a problem. :(

Ad-Aware is an anti spyware scanner which does not provide a realtimescanner, therefore it is not a problem to run this tool simultaneously with other anti virus or anti spyware programs. If you only want to keep one anti spyware program I would keep Malwarebytes instead of Ad-Aware.

I removed Ad-Aware and kept Malwarebytes because I got that off here, and I like it better. I also having been having trouble with Firefox now. It freezes often, just the pages and tabs, I can still minimize it and maximize it but the hourglass timer is always present on the screen or whatever the cursor was when it froze. Pictures are also taking a long time to load. Download times are slower as well. I don't know if I did something wrong or what.

For the Adobe download, I get this message.

Title: getPlus+®: Error

Message: Installation is corrupt! (16248.202.235-42072312.80040154.FFFFFFFF.80040154)

I was able to go back and save the .exe file to my desktop and successfully installed the Adobe Reader. Thank you.

Hi,

could you please check if you have the same problems when you start Firefox in safe-mode: How to start firefox in safe mode

If Firefox runs fine in safe-mode this most likely means, that one of your add-ons doesn't work well with Firefox, disabling might fix your problem then.
