I installed windows XP on two different hard drives, but have since removed one hard drive. But now on startup it still gives a choice between the two O/S, after a few seconds selecting the one that doesn't exist anymore. This results in a black screen with nothing.

How can I remove this selection and boot the remaining XP installation by default?

Easily done, follow procedures at Removing the invalid entries from Boot.ini - http://windowsxp.mvps.org/bootopt.htm.
