I've got some sort of infection going on and am not sure what to do to get rid of it - efforts so far have not resolved the issue.

Clue - regedit.exe doesn't work, but renaming to regedit.com does work.
Clue - HiJackThis ran fine until yesterday. Now it runs if I rename it to HiJackThis.com
Clue - I had Avira as my anti-virus software. I noticed some time ago that I'd get the "Update" slide up, but clicking "Update" simply made the window disappear. I since tried to open the manager to do a scan and I couldn't open it.

Clue - Trendmicro's Housecall said it found 7 objects. Cleaning didn't help.

Clue - McAfee says it found stuff, deleted stuff, didn't help.

MBAM reported 2 objects, cleaned. Didn't help. Ran MBAM in safe mode, reported 53 objects, cleaned. Immediately, regedit.exe worked. Rebooted system, regedit.exe broke. Reran MBAM, found the same 53 objects. Cleaned. Regedit still broken.

Clue - www.google.com comes up immediately, but when I try to do a search there is a 3-4 second pause before it returns anything. This is different from how it used to be and different from how my laptop (same network) currently is.

I ran HiJackThis and didn't see anything that I recognized, but there is one thing that looks odd: wxphqe.dll

I can't find any info on wxphqe.dll which raises suspicions.

I can post HJT logs and the like - does this "infection" sound familiar? Is there a name for it?

Thanks

Sorry.

I've updated MBAM and am currently running a new scan.

FWIW, McAfee found two things that I think might be legit: tftpd32 (I have some recollection of installing a ftp utility some time ago for uploading), and Combofix, something I needed quite some time ago. However, neither of these can be removed by McAfee.

Please edit your previous post and remove the HJT log. HJT logs are not permitted in this section of the forum.

Your copy of Malwarebytes is out-of-date. Please update it, run a quick scan, remove everything found and post the log.

Okay, I downloaded the "latest" version of MBAM and did a full scan. I clicked "Remove Selected" when the scan was done, then did a quick scan. The following is the result:

I clicked "Remove Selected again" - now regedit.exe comes up. However, I have to reboot. I'll post back when I do.

But I may still have an issue - unless it's cleared up this time around, google still showed the delay, and then when I searched for something, Firefox crashed. I'll know more in a little while as I continue testing.

EDIT: As I feared - something is still broken. When I googled "airplane", the system paused with the message - "Waiting for clients1.google.com" and then crashed once it started to return results.

EDIT: I've confirmed - something is messed up with Firefox and google. Very strange. Other sites don't seem to be an issue, and google itself comes up. It simply crashes Firefox when I do a search. This doesn't happen with Firefox on my laptop. Ring any bells?

When I use IE7 I get the same pause but not the crash.

Both regedit.exe and hijackthis.exe work, fwiw.

What's the next step?
