Hello,

This is my first time using these forums, and my first time with a security problem of sufficient concern to go to these measures. Recently it seems my laptop (running Norton 360 and SuperAntiSpyware, browsing with Firefox) has become infected with something SAS identifies as "trojan.dropper/sys-nv". This is the first time in a while (second time in a year, I think) I've had any trojan appear, and googling it showed it had a reputation for appearing after a computer's restarted. I think I remember the next scan after it restarted didn't show it to come up again, but the last scan I did after shutting down the computer usually showed there were now three occurrences of it.
The first time it showed up, SAS mentioned 'Tencent QQ' in it's name when it was being quarantined and removed. This is a Chinese instant messaging service, but I don't remember clicking any links from it of the "check out these crazee pics of u from last nite lol! [link]" kind, but I accept QQ itself might not be entirely trustworthy. I don't know if this means QQ is the source of the malware (or the malware... attatched itself to QQ?), I honestly don't know very much about computers. Assuming QQ is the source, and provided this is removable without putting my laptop through an MRI scanner + blast furnace, is there a way to make it safe?
The scan that turned up three instances of the malware only mentions QQ in one occurrence. Here's what it says on the 'quarantine and removal' screen - apart from the tracking cookie stuff that always comes up:
:
C:\USERS\JACK\APPDATA\LOCAL\TEMP\SELFUPDATE.EXE
C:\USERS\JACK\APPDATA\ROAMING\TENCENT\QQ\SAFEBASE\SELFUP...
C:\Windows\Prefetch\SELFUPDATE.EXE-B2E858B7.pf

Also, apart from how to remove it, can anyone explain what this malware does? Is it likely to have come from QQ or elsewhere? Is it safe to use this laptop normally, such as entering passwords for sites etc.? I can use another computer until this one is sorted, so feel free to consider this a lower priority if other people have more urgent cases. I'd also like to apologise for anything I've done improperly in this post, it will only be out of ignorance.

Thanks

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE
