I was referred to the HJT forum by Garmanma. The earlier thread is located at
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/256947/my-daughters-pc-has-malware/. In short, by daughter's PC got infected with malware she inadvertently downloaded last week. It appeared she initially download Personal Antivirus. On one of my other clean PCs I discovered Malwarebytes and after some difficulty was able to get that running. I had to rename it to get it to run and then run in safe mode. I believe I corrected that problem, but there are still a number of other issues that Malwarebytes finds but cannot delete. After Malwarebytes finds the problems it says that several files will be deleted when I restart the PC. However, when I start the PC in normal mode, it eventually hangs and therefore apparently cannot complete the removal.

The problem I have appears to be with uacinit.dll. Before posting I read several posts that addressed this issue and I am afraid I may have to reformat her PC and reinstall the operating system. I am hoping for the best (I can successfully clean her PC without reformatting), but preparing for the worse. Her PC is an HP Pavilion a1030e with XP Professional SP3.

Another bizarre thing that happens after she starts up her PC is that the audio from a number of websites start playing without opening Internet Explorer. However, when I do open IE, it asks me if I want to return to a previous session or start on my homepage. If I open the previous session anywhere from 8 to 20 windows open up running either commercials or odd videos. One website I remembered opening was Cranky Geeks. I am thinking this browser hijack is related to the malware problem.

I followed Garmanma's instructions and ran RootRepeal. In this final posting he told me to post it to the HJT forum. It is posted below. I ran it in both Normal and Safe Mode. I originally ran it in Normal mode but was not sure if it ran completely so I reran it in Safe Mode. Garmanma said scans should be run in Normal mode for best results.

Prior to posting to this forum, I read some general instructions on this website about malware removal and it appears that DDS is generally needed to diagnosis issues. Therefore, I downloaded it and copied the DDS text file below and attached a zipped Attach file.

Hope to hear from you soon. Thanks for helping!!

Thanks for responding to my original post Syler. From the number of postings on this forum, I can see how you get overwhelmed. My son’s PC got infected last week with Antivirus Pro 2010, so he may be posting here soon. My son lives on his own, I have tried to help him over the phone and suggested using bleepingcomputer as a resource, but he will have to deal with this problem himself. My daughter lives at home with me while she searches for a job following her graduation from college in May.

Since my post 2 weeks ago, I believe I made a lot of progress in removing the malware and rootkits. Last weekend I downloaded ver. 1.41 of Malwarebytes and ran it 4 times. The 5th time I ran it no problems were found; so it appears to have removed as much as it can. Since then my daughter’s PC seems to be running normally and subsequent Malwarebytes runs over the last week come up clean. However, Symantec antivirus, which my daughter uses on her PC, detects a virus called Backdoor.Tidserv!inf, but takes no action. The only response Symantec has is “clean failed, quarantine failed, access denied.” Every time I run Malwarebytes, Symantec opens 2 windows saying that it found this virus; it finds anywhere from 4 to 6 items, but they all have the same name (Backdoor.Tidserv!inf), same location, and same file name. The file Symantec finds is C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Administration|Local Settings\Temp\UAC222a.tmp.

I updated Malwarebytes last night and ran a quick scan. Malwarebytes found nothing, but while Malwarebytes was running, 2 Symantec windows popped up telling me I had the Backdoor.tidserv!inf virus, but again did nothing.

My problem seems very similar to another I found on this forum at http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/ind...or+tidserv+inf; namely, Malwarebytes finds nothing, but Symantec finds the Backdoor virus. Let me know if your cleanup strategy will be similar to the one xblindx recommended in that forum thread.

I did not run the RSIT because I wasn’t sure if you would recommend another course of action in light of what I was able to accomplish with Malwarebytes last weekend. I also posted the log from the Malwarebytes quick scan I ran last night; but wasn’t sure if I should run dds.scr again.

Again, thanks for the help.

Hi lapooch,

I can't recommend any course of action without any logs, that's where all the information is, although you have done a very good description of your problems :(

Please post the Rsit logs requested then we can go from there :(

Hi lapooch,

I have seen this issue a few times with Norton, it seem to be a problem with Norton detecting it's own quarantined items. Follow the instruction below
from Norton's site and let me know if you stop getting the alerts from Norton.

It is not necesary to erase the complete Qbackup folder, neither you need to boot in safe mode also.QBackup folder (Quarantine Backup) is used by Norton AntiVirus component to store backup recoveries of repaired and removed threats when you fix/remove threats during the scan. It may also contain information about threats detected and retains the remediated data in your computer itself. It will be automatically recreated by Norton program when you run scan next time.
So to FIX this problem. Just open Norton history, GO to "unresolved security risk" Press "Remove*" the item failed to remove, wait for the "failed to remove" status, this will update the "*.qbi" file which have the history of the unresolved items. Then go to Norton settings, go to "miscellaneous setting" and disable the Norton Product Tamper Protection under Miscellanious Settings. Then open your windows explorer and go to
"C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Norton\{0C55C096-0F1D-4F28-AAA2-85EF591126E7}\Norton\QBackup"
and erase your most recently (updated, newly) "*.QBI" file. The asteric it a long number as "{DDAB4332-ED04-4898-9C20-D231FDC4B0C5}.qbi" it will be a small file 1-10 KB. Only deleted this file. Close Windows explorer, go to Norton reactived the Norton Product Tamper Protection under Miscellanious Settings and you can enter to the HISTORY and you will find it is empty (clear).

Let's also make sure their isn't still something there, with an ark scan.

We need to scan for Rootkits with GMER
  • Please download GMER from one of the following locations, and save it to your desktop:
    • Main Mirror
This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)
    • Zip Mirror
This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.
  • Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs, as this process may crash your computer.
  • Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security program drivers will not conflict with gmer's driver.
  • Double click on Gmer to run it.
  • Allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • You may see a rootkit warning window, If you do, click No.
  • Click on Posted Image and wait for the scan to finish.
  • If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
  • Push Posted Image and save the logfile to your desktop.
  • Copy and Paste the contents of that file in your next post.

Hi Syler,

I was unable to perform the steps outlined in the fix because I could not find any of the items in the Symantec console. I realize Norton and Symantec are from the same company, but I wonder if there is a difference in their user interfaces. For example, when I open History (called Histories in Symantec), I see 4 options; namely, Threat History, Scan Histories, Event Log, and Tamper History. I cannot find anything called “unresolved security risk.” If I open Threat History all the Risks are listed and I see numerous listings for Backdoor, but even when I highlight one of the Backdoor risks and then right-click it, the only options shown are undo action taken, clean, delete permanently, move to quarantine, export, and properties.

Also, Tamper Protection is in a section called Configure, not Miscellaneous settings, and when I click on Tamper Protection it is already disabled because the Enable Tamper Protection box is not checked. I also looked for the file that the instructions told me to find, but only got as far as C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application\Symantec (I have no folder called Norton), but there was no file named 0C55C096… Therefore, I am not sure how to proceed with Symantec.

I did download and run GMER and the log is posted below.

lapooch,

Well the good news is Gmer is reporting the rootkit is definitely gone, so it is an issue with Norton. I don't use Norton so I am not familiar
with the interface, so let's try and work this out.

If I open Threat History all the Risks are listed and I see numerous listings for Backdoor, but even when I highlight one of the Backdoor risks and then right-click it, the only options shown are undo action taken, clean, delete permanently, move to quarantine, export, and properties.

Highlight all the items in Threat History, then right click them and select delete permanently. Let me know if this makes a difference or if you encounter problems.

but only got as far as C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application\Symantec (I have no folder called Norton), but there was no file named 0C55C096

Is their anything in this folder, if their is a folder that looks like the one listed, ie lots of numbers, open it and see if you it has a Norton or Symantec folder in it.

Syler,

Glad to hear the worst may be over. I tried to delete Backdoor from the Symantec's Threat History but Symantec did not allow me to do so. A window popped up that said,

Symantec Antivirus cannot perform this action on 1 of the files you selected.

Possible causes:

  • The files have been moved or deleted
  • The computer they are located on is turned off
  • You are trying to clean files located in an e-mail message
  • You are trying to clean a compressed file in a container

However, the Backdoor name appeared as a hot link in the Threat History window. When I clicked on it, a page from Symantec opened that gave instructions how to remove Backdoor; the address of that page is http://www.symantec.com/en/uk/security_res...-99&tabid=3. After reading it carefully, I may have found the solution; but I want to ask you to make sure that is the right action to take.

If you look on the Removal tab, there is a set of 4 instructions. Instruction 3 is to run a full scan and 3 steps are listed. Following step 3 is a list of actions depending upon what the scan finds. I believe the Backdoor virus fits the first bullet item; namely, the file found is in that form. The complete path of Backdoor is C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Administration|Local Settings\Temp\UAC222a.tmp. Therefore, it appears I can simply delete the file and restart the PC and this nightmare may be over. Do you agree with that assessment? I have come this far, I don't want to do something I will regret. I looked in Windows Explorer and that file does exist in the path specified.

Thanks for all your help. :(

They are instructions for if the malware is active on your machine, as I said before Gmer does not show this rootkit so I am sure it is gone and this is just an
issue with Norton. Please do this next step.

Please download SystemLook from one of the links below and save it to your Desktop.
Download Mirror #1
Download Mirror #2
  • Double-click SystemLook.exe to run it.
  • A blank Windows shall open with the title "SystemLook v1.0-by Jpshortstuff".
  • Copy the content of the following codebox into the main textfield :
    :folderfind
    QBackup
  • Please Confirm everything is copied and Pasted as I have provided above
  • Click the Look button to start the scan.
  • When finished, a notepad window will open with the results of the scan, Please post this log in your next reply.
Note: The log can also be found on your Desktop entitled SystemLook.txt

Syler,

I ran SystemLook and the log file is listed below:

SystemLook v1.0 by jpshortstuff (29.08.09)
Log created at 11:03 on 04/10/2009 by Admin (Administrator - Elevation successful)

========== folderfind ==========

Searching for "QBackup"
No folders found.

-=End Of File=-

It appears the QBackup folder does not exist. Following your response on Oct. 1, I did a Windows search for that folder and could not find it either. Also, you asked if there was a file with a lot of numbers; the only one I found was C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\{EF63305C-BAD7-4144-9208-D65528260864}, but all files within that folder were associated with AdAware.

I was curious about the comment you made that Backdoor was not active on my PC. If you had not told me to run GMER, is there any other way I could have known that it was not active? I just assumed that if Symantec found something that it is active unless Symantec says it is quarantined or it is be deleted. But the only thing Symantec told me was that it could not do anything with Backdoor.

If you still had the Rootkit on your machine then MBAM would have aleast picked it up, even if it couldn't remove it. Since neither MBAM or Gmer has picked anything
up that is why I am sure that this is a Symantec issue, see this page.

If you are willing to try uninstalling Symantec then reinstall it, this maybe the best way to go, make sure that you have your product key if you do this though, as you
will need it to reinstall symantec.

Let's do an online scan to make sure their is nothing else there.

Please do a scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner

Note: If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.

Click on the Accept button and install any components it needs.
  • The program will install and then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • After the files have been downloaded on the left side of the page in the Scan section select My Computer
  • This will start the program and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on View scan report
  • Now, click on the Save Report as button.
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.
Please post back here with the following logs:
  • Kaspersky report
  • New Rsit log
Thanks

Syler,

I ran the Kapersky scan and RSIT again. The Kapersky report and the RSIT logs are below. I also attached the HTML version of the Kapersky report in case that may be easier to read.

I also want to let you know that I will be out of town from Tuesday, October 6 until late afternoon Sunday October 11; so I won't be able to respond to your response until after I return. Therefore, please do not close the topic if you don't hear from me in the next week. I will respond after I return home. Thanks much!

Hi lapooch,

Well it looks like Norton was finding something that was there after all, although it is only a leftover and I don't know why it is unable to remove it, we will remove
this now and hopefully that will be the end of it, let me know in your next reply if you stop get the message from Norton, and if you have any more issues.

Install ERUNT
This tool will create a complete backup of your registry. After every reboot, a new backup is created to ensure we have a safety net after each step. Do not delete these backups until we are finished.
  • Please download erunt-setup.exe to your desktop.
  • Double click erunt-setup.exe. Follow the prompts and allow ERUNT to be installed with the settings at default. If you do not want a Desktop icon, feel free to uncheck that. When asked if you want to create an ERUNT entry in the startup folder, answer Yes. You can delete the installation file after use.
  • Erunt will open when the installation is finished. Check all items to be backed up in the default location and click OK.
You can find a complete guide to using the program here:
http://www.larshederer.homepage.t-online.de/erunt/erunt.txt

When we are finished with fixing your computer (I will make it clear when we are), you can uninstall ERUNT through Add/Remove Programs. The backups will be stored at C:\WINDOWS\erdnt, and will not be deleted when ERUNT is uninstalled.

We need to execute an OTM script
  • Please download OTM by OldTimer and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Paste the following code under the Posted Image area. Do not include the word "Code".
    :Services
    szmdmx
    rootrepeal[1]
    :Reg
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
    "SiSPower"=-
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\PersonalAV]
    :Files
    C:\Program Files\PersonalAV
    :Commands
    [EmptyTemp]
    [Reboot]
  • Push the large Posted Image button.
  • OTM may ask to reboot the machine. Please do so if asked.
  • Copy/Paste the contents under the Posted Image line here in your next reply.
  • If you are unable to copy/paste from this window (as will be the case if the machine was rebooted), open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and copy/paste the contents of that document back here in your next post.

Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This changed from what we know in 2006 read this article:

http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546

I suggest you remove the program now. Click on start > run > and then paste the following into the "open" field: appwiz.cpl and press OK. From within Add or Remove Programs uninstall the following if they exist: Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player.

Please post back here with the following logs:
  • OTM results
  • New Rsit log
Thanks
