Well, I had a monster of a virus the other day, I think it was a rootkit. Well, I tried using MBAM to scan but it didn't start, so I installed a new one and renamed it, still didn't work. I used combofix and it fixed some things, one of which being MBAM. I ran a scan and it found about 72 infections. I deleted them all and rebooted.

I ran SAS and it found 32 more infections, deleted those too and rebooted. I then tried to do another scan with MBAM but I couldn't update anymore. I checked SAS and I couldn't update that either. Both programs are in my firewalls list and are allowed. I use windows firewall. The only antivirus I use is avast right now. I uninstalled MBAM and installed it again, still couldn't update. I tried with Revo and still. I even did the winsockfix and still cannot update. I keep getting error 732. I wonder if the infections I had somehow deleted something tied to the updating of MBAM and SAS. I just ran a quick scan with MBAM and it found no infections.

We Need to check for Rootkits with RootRepeal
  • Download RootRepeal from the following location and save it to your desktop.
  • Extract RootRepeal.exe from the archive (If you did not use the "Direct Download" mirror).
  • Open Posted Image on your desktop.
  • Click the Posted Image tab.
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • Check all seven boxes: Posted Image
  • Push Ok
  • Check the box for your main system drive (Usually C:), and press Ok.
  • Allow RootRepeal to run a scan of your system. This may take some time.
  • Once the scan completes, push the Posted Image button. Save the log to your desktop, using a distinctive name, such as RootRepeal.txt. Include this report in your next reply, please.

thedemoninside I had somewhat of a similar experience for the first time about a week ago, I ended up deciding to reformat but those root kits are NASTY !!

I am a firm believer in MalwareBytes and was beginning to think it was superman of the spyware industry then I say root kits are the Kryptonite.

I posted something on the malwarebytes forum about it and they say its something they have been battling for a while, interesting to see what they will do the malwarebytes to make it stronger against root kits!!!

Malwarebytes+Root Repeal use to be able to handle the first wave of this infection
The present one requires some batch scripts tailored to each individual computer

Which is why I'm going to suggest that you submit a HJT / DDS log

Please read the pinned topic titled "Preparation Guide For Use Before Posting A Hijackthis Log". If you cannot complete a step, then skip it and continue with the next. In Step 6 there are instructions for downloading and running DDS which will create a Pseudo HJT Report as part of its log.

When you have done that, post your log in the HijackThis Logs and Malware Removal forum, NOT here, for assistance by the HJT Team Experts. A member of the Team will walk you through, step by step, on how to clean your computer. If you post your log back in this thread, the response from the HJT Team will be delayed because your post will have to be moved. This means it will fall in line behind any others posted that same day.

The HJT team is very busy and it will take awhile to get to your post
Please be patient and good luck

Do not send me PMs with problems that should be posted in the forums. Keep it in the forums, so everyone benefits

Hello,

Now that you have posted a log here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/257521/update-errors-after-virus-deletions/ you should NOT make further changes to your computer (install/uninstall programs, use special fix tools, delete files, edit the registry, etc) unless advised by a HJT Team member, nor should you ask for help elsewhere. Doing so can result in system changes which may not show in the log you already posted. Further, any modifications you make on your own may cause confusion for the helper assisting you and could complicate the malware removal process which would extend the time it takes to clean your computer.

From this point on the HJT Team should be the only members that you take advice from, until they have verified your log as clean.

Please be patient. It may take a while to get a response because the HJT Team members are EXTREMELY busy working logs posted before yours. They are volunteers who will help you out as soon as possible. Once you have made your post and are waiting, please DO NOT make another reply until it has been responded to by a member of the HJT Team. Generally the staff checks the forum for postings that have 0 replies as this makes it easier for them to identify those who have not been helped. If you post another response there will be 1 reply. A team member, looking for a new log to work may assume another HJT Team member is already assisting you and not open the thread to respond.

Please be patient. It may take several days, up to two weeks perhaps less, to get a response but your log will be reviewed and answered as soon as possible. I advise checking your topic once a day for responses as the e-mail notification system is unreliable.

To avoid confusion, I am closing this topic. Good luck with your log.
