can you buy any internal cd-rw and use it externally? is all that matters the right case/housing for it?

i have a problem i have a slimline cd rom already installed but can only afford a internal cd-rw that wont fit the slot... and dont know how to add an external drive... i think my pc is a compaq.

do you need a specific cd-rw or any will do you think?.. would it be expensive to set it up externally?

thank you soooo much
