Hi all. I got sick! PC Antispyware 2010 got itself into my computer and it was a nasty thing. It stopped installation of Windows Malicious Software Removal tool and Malwarebytes. It would also close spybot when starting the scan.

I got some background bug removed with Combofix and was then able to install malwarebytes and remove some trojans.

There are still some remaining issues though and I'm hoping the gurus here can help out.

What I know:

I cannot run, delete, rename, or do anything with the hijack this.exe on my desktop. It says the file's in use. Same goes with Spybot.

Also, I still am blocked from installing the Windows Malicious Software Removal tool.

What I don't know:

Anything else that may be screwy.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

If I don't respond within 2 days, please feel free to PM me.
Please don't ask for help via PM. The forums are there for a reason. Please post in the forums so others may benefit as well.

Thank you. I have not since resolved the issue and appreciate your assistance.

I am still blocked from installing the latest Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool and can't run, delete, rename, or do anything with the hijack this.exe on my desktop or the Spybot S&D folders. They say the files are in use.

I'm sure there's more going on than that, but those are the only noticable issues.

Hello, .
Welcome to Bleeping Computer. My name is etavares and I will be helping you with your log.

I'd like to let you know that I am in training here at BC. At each stage of the process, my work will be checked by an expert coach. That means there may be a slight delay between my responses as they check it. Don't worry, we won't leave you.

Here's a few things to get started:
  • Please subscribe to this topic, if you haven't already, and wait for me to get back to you.
  • Please avoid installing/uninstalling or updating any programs and attempting any unsupervised fixes or scans. This can make helping you impossible.
  • Even if things appear better, that does not mean we are finished. Please continue to follow my instructions until I give you the all clean.
  • If at any point, you are not sure what I am asking for, please ask me and I can better communicate what I mean.
  • Please reply within 5 days of my last post or the thread will be closed. If you will be away or unable to reply, please let me know in advance so the thread is not closed. We have many folks waiting for help and it is not fair to keep an unresponsive thread open.

The log shows that you have been using so called peer-to-peer or file-sharing programmes (in your case uTorrent). These programmes allow to share files between users as the name(s) suggest. In today's world the cyber crime has come a long way and any means is used to infect personal computers to make use of their stored data or machine power for further propagation of their malware files. A popular means is the use of file-sharing tools as a tremendous amount of prospective victims can be reached through it.

It is therefore possible to be infected by downloading manipulated files via peer-to-peer tools and thus suggested to be used with intense care. I recommend that you uninstall this program. That is optional, however. If you decide to not uninstall, please refrain from using it until I let you know your computer is clean.

Step 1

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link 1
alternate download link 2

MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you. Temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the definition updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
On the Scanner tab:
  • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
  • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
  • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply. Be sure to post the complete log to include the top portion which shows MBAM's database version and your operating system.
  • Exit MBAM when done.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be asked to reboot your computer so MBAM can proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware. Please note...I see that you did not appear to reboot after the last MBAM run. This is critical to do immediately after it runs.

Step 2

We need to wipe some files with Root Repeal.
  • Start Root Repeal.
  • Select File then Scan
  • On the Select Drives form select drive C:\ by "ticking" the box for drive C:\ and click OK
  • When the scan is complete - highlight each of the following file(s) (one at a time if more then one is listed) by left clicking it. Then use right mouse click and select the Wipe File option only for each file.
    ay2hdcog.SYS
  • After Wiping all files, immediately reboot your pc!
  • Now Re-run RootRepeal to scan like before and post that log.

Step 3

In your reply, please post:
  • MBAM log
  • RootRepeal log
  • Fresh DDS log
  • Can you do anything with those locked files now?
Note: If you are able to delete those files, please stay with me, we still have other steps to remove the malware on your machine.

If I don't respond within 2 days, please feel free to PM me.
Please don't ask for help via PM. The forums are there for a reason. Please post in the forums so others may benefit as well.

Hi Clack,

Yes, you only need to wipe that one file. The others are legit files and wiping them could cause problems. MBAM came back clean, but you did not update before running. The current database is 2871. Please make sure to follow the instructions as written, or reply back with questions first. It will ensure we remove the malware without damaging your system.

Let's run Combofix:

We will begin with ComboFix.exe. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

* Ensure you have disabled all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply for further review.

If I don't respond within 2 days, please feel free to PM me.
Please don't ask for help via PM. The forums are there for a reason. Please post in the forums so others may benefit as well.

Hi Clack,

Ok, Combofix cleaned out some of the malware, but we still need to do some more work.

Step 1

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

3. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

File::
C:\WINDOWS\System32\Drivers\ay2hdcog.SYS
c:\windows\Epikucowoz.dat
c:\program files\common files\tomaweqol.dl
c:\windows\syxuhyfyny.dat
c:\windows\afihy.com
c:\windows\system32\otor.bin
c:\program files\common files\cijubuhy.lib
c:\program files\common files\qujaji.pif
c:\docume~1\brian\applic~1\myvyqe.pif
c:\windows\cafu.pif
c:\docume~1\brian\applic~1\axadecyku.pif
c:\documents and settings\Brian\Local Settings\Application Data\uqalupu.pif
c:\program files\common files\ynefacux._dl
c:\docume~1\brian\applic~1\eruwew.scr
c:\docume~1\brian\applic~1\izimypasic.pif
c:\documents and settings\Laura\Local Settings\Application Data\uxineh.exe
c:\windows\yqagavamu.bat
c:\windows\zifuc.vbs
c:\windows\hojapiso.bin
c:\docume~1\alluse~1\applic~1\opolid.pif
c:\windows\xyny.pif
c:\program files\common files\mofytuda._dl
c:\windows\system32\onikubix.sys
c:\windows\system32\razulofelo.bin
c:\program files\common files\mubyt.dat
c:\program files\common files\yluris._sy
c:\windows\ygifatode.bin
c:\windows\system32\pigydikok.bin
c:\windows\wufosy.bin
c:\documents and settings\Laura\Local Settings\Application Data\xalo.com

Registry::
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\security center\Monitoring\McAfeeAntiVirus]
"DisableMonitoring"=dword:00000000
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\security center\Monitoring\McAfeeFirewall]
"DisableMonitoring"=dword:00000000

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

Posted Image

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.

Step 2

I'd like us to scan your machine with ESET OnlineScan
  • Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
    ESET OnlineScan
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    • Click on Posted Image to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Check Posted Image
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Check Posted Image
  • Push the Start button.
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, push Posted Image
  • Push Posted Image, and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • Push Posted Image

Step 3

You said before that you were unable to do anything with HijackThis.exe on your desktop. Are you able to delete, rename or move now? Also, you mentioned you were blocked from installing the Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool. Please try to install again now.

Step 4

In your reply, please post the:
  • Combofix log
  • ESET log
  • Results of Step 3, with detailed errors if you are blocked or unable to do anything.

If I don't respond within 2 days, please feel free to PM me.
Please don't ask for help via PM. The forums are there for a reason. Please post in the forums so others may benefit as well.

I ran eset per instructions in Step 2. which reported "No threats found." and thus no option for a log.

I am now able to install the Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool. The HijackThis.exe on my desktop and Spybot folders are still blocked. See attached.

Thanks again

Hi Clack,

Ok...most of the malware is gone, but we still have work to do. Thanks for the screenshots, they were very helpful. The malware has changed the permissions of those files/folders and locked you out.

Let's run Junction to see where we stand.

We need to scan the system with this special tool:

* Please download and save:

Junction.zip

* Unzip it and place Junction.exe in the Windows directory (C:\Windows).
* Go to Start => Run... => Copy and paste the following command in the Run box and click OK:

cmd /c junction -s c:\ >log.txt&log.txt& del log.txt

A command window opens starting to scan the system. Wait until a log file opens. Copy and paste the log in your next reply.

If I don't respond within 2 days, please feel free to PM me.
Please don't ask for help via PM. The forums are there for a reason. Please post in the forums so others may benefit as well.

Hi Clack,

Ok, we're making progress.

Step 1

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

3. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

File::
c:\WINDOWS\ewivicyjyx.inf

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

Posted Image

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.

Step 2

Please save this file to your desktop. Click on Start->Run, and copy-paste the following command (the bolded text) into the "Open" box, and click OK. When it's finished, there will be a log called Win32kDiag.txt on your desktop. Please open it with notepad and post the contents here.
"%userprofile%\desktop\win32kdiag.exe" -f -r

Step 3
We need to reset the permissions altered by the malware on some files.

* Download this tool and save it to your Desktop: <-- Important

Inherit.exe

* Go to Start => Run => Copy and paste the first line of the following lines in the run box and click OK:

"%userprofile%\desktop\inherit" "c:\Documents and Settings\Brian\Desktop\HijackThis.exe"
"%userprofile%\desktop\inherit" "c:\Documents and Settings\Laura\Desktop\HijackThis.exe"
"%userprofile%\desktop\inherit" "c:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy\SpybotSD.exe"
"%userprofile%\desktop\inherit" "c:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe"
"%userprofile%\desktop\inherit" "c:\Spybot - Search & Destroy\SpybotSD.exe"
"%userprofile%\desktop\inherit" "c:\WINDOWS\ewivicyjyx.inf"
"%userprofile%\desktop\inherit" "c:\WINDOWS\system32\MRT.exe"

* If you get a security warning select Run.
* You will get a "Finish" popup. Click OK.
* Do the same for the rest of the lines until you have run all the above commands one by one.

Step 4
Let's do another check with MBAM. Please run another scan using MBAM. Make sure to update the definitions first, then perform a Quick Scan. Let it fix anything it wants to. Please post the log.

Step 5
Now...try to remove the files you wanted to. Please note, though....HJT and Spybot S&D should be removed through the Add/Remove Programs section of the COntrol Panel. You will probably see multiple entries for Spybot (and may need to remove HJT from both user profiles since it's installed separately for both.).

Step 6

In your reply, please post:
  • Combofix log from Step 1
  • win32kdiag log from Step 2
  • Confirmation that Step 3 seemed to go OK (e.g. you got the Finish popup).
  • the MBAM log from Step 4.
  • the results of Step 5.
  • An updated DDS log
In case you don't have DDS anymore, here's the link to the instructions on creating a DDS log: DDS Post (Post 2 in this thread)

If everything does OK here, the next step is to secure your computer so it can't get reinfected again and clean up our mess. Please don't remove Combofix yet.

Hello, Clack.
Were you able to delete the folders you weren't able to before (or better yet remove via add/remove programs? I see you have installed Unlocker...please do not attempt fixes without being instructed to. We can end up fighting each other without ever knowing it and/or cause unintended damage to your machine.

You asked about McAffee. There are a few free antivirus programs I can recommend, but when using P2P no anti-virus program will be perfect...The best achieve 90% protection with a 4+ week-old virus, and much, much less with a new virus. Net, you still have a very good chance of infection, even with antivirus, firewall and anti-spyware programs installed. Nothing is perfect. once we're done, my final post will have some suggestions to prevent this from happening again.

we're in the final stages now. I want a clean antivirus scan before we call it clean.

Step 1
  • Open notepad.
  • Please copy the contents of the code box below. To do this highlight the contents of the box and right click on it. Paste this into the open notepad.
  • Save it to your desktop (click file, save as) as "fixit.reg" with the quotes.
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar]
"2318C2B1-4965-11D4-9B18-009027A5CD4F"=-
[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{2318C2B1-4965-11D4-9B18-009027A5CD4F}]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar]
"ED4BD629-C1B6-4399-8A34-02CCAA921DC9"=-
[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{ED4BD629-C1B6-4399-8A34-02CCAA921DC9}]

NOTICE: This file was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine. Running this on another machine may cause damage to your operating system

Locate fixit.reg on your Desktop and double-click on it.
You will receive a prompt similar to: "Do you wish to merge the information into the registry?".
Answer "Yes" and wait for a message to appear similar to "Merged Successfully".

Please reply back letting me know if it merged correctly.

Step 2

Next, we need to update Java.
Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 16 and save it to your desktop.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 16...allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Select your Platform: "Windows".
  • Select your Language: "Multi-language".
  • Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • Click Continue and the page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u16-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

Step 3

Step 4

You are using and outdated version of Adobe Reader. Adobe has since been updated and the update closes many security holes and provides new features.

First, uninstall earlier versions of Adobe Reader.
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Adobe Reader.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Adobe Reader in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Adobe Reader version.
Please download the latest version from:
http://get.adobe.com/reader/

And install it. Once installed, launch it, select Help --> Check for Updates and install any updates.

You may also try the free Foxit PDF reader if you prefer:

Step 5

In your reply, please include:
  • Let me know if registry fix in Step 1 merged successfully.
  • Updated DDS log
  • ESET log or results if clean

If I don't respond within 2 days, please feel free to PM me.
Please don't ask for help via PM. The forums are there for a reason. Please post in the forums so others may benefit as well.

Etavares,

Yes I was able to remove the folders after following your instructions. I did so prior to installing Unlocker. They were not visible in add/remove programs so I had to manually remove them. I installed unlocker to delete an old utorrent folder that got locked as in use when moved. I have since uninstalled unlocker.

Step one merged correctly. I'm rebooting now to complete step two and will post again when finished with your recomendations.

THanks again.
